AGRIBUSINESS: Coccidiosis in piglets.

AGRIBUSINESS: Coccidiosis in piglets. Coccidiosis is a major cause of diarrhea in piglets that have long-term effects on health and performance, though its relatively under-diagnosed its a global concern. The problems of piglet diarrhea, includes high mortality, poor performance and susceptibility to other diseases because of secondary bacteria infection. The diarrhoea is usually yellow or gray and pasty.. AGRIBUSINESS: Coccidiosis in piglets. The primary cause of coccidiosis in piglets is the parasite Isospora suis, which is a pig-specific coccidia. There are other coccidial species that can infect pigs, but they don’t commonly cause disease. Coccidial oocysts that are shed from infected animals can survive on the farm for months or even years. Ingesting oocysts still present in the environment, usually from previous litters by piglets is the common route of infection. When ingested, the oocyst in the small intestine undergoes some of developmental stages, which takes five to seven days before new oocysts are formed. Each stage invades and multiplies within cells then bursts out. This destroys the infected cells, which in turn damages the gut, leading to diarrhea. Once the new oocysts are shed in the feces, they go through a short maturation process in the environment before being ready to infect a new host. AGRIBUSINESS: Coccidiosis in piglets. Prevention strategies like hygiene and biosecurity will help to reduce the incidence of many types of diarrhea. However, it is important to know the cause in order to treat effectively and implement a specific control plan. Clinical signs of coccidiosis can be seen in pigs as early as six days of age to about three weeks old. This is consistent with them becoming infected soon after birth, which is when they are most susceptible. As coccidiosis is the most frequent cause of diarrhea in piglets between six and 15 days of age, they will have poor body condition, be dehydrated and with a rough coat . The diarrhea is pale yellow or grey and very pasty. Antibiotic treatment with sulphonamides ,treating animals with clinical signs is strongly advised. If the diagnosis is uncertain fecal samples can be taken for oocyst identification and count at the This is to prevent losses as well as reducing ongoing damage to the gut. In order to prevent clinical signs of coccidiosis, many pig producers treat all piglets on a farm at three to five days of age.

Clinician quits job for wooden- matatus and his making money.

He decided to quit his job in June to follow his passion — his childhood love for toys. He traded his degree for his passion and his making so much money. “I completed my studies in 2013 before landing a job. But I loved making models of different things while growing up. I would at the time use papers and old cartons,” Lukaho told Ma3 Culture. He added that,“Most of the time, I worked during night shifts, which is why I utilised my day time to make doll houses and other toys. It’s my passion, I never did it for money.” Lukaho decided to make toys that resemble the modern day mathrees plying the city and Komarock estate route.Read more

SMUGGLING OF STAR TORTOISE FROM INDIA.

A large-scale network, supported by high international demand for exotic pets, is causing extreme suffering to the animals and threatening the survival of the star tortoise. In one site alone, at least 55,000 tortoises were poached from the wild in one year, for centuries, in rural parts of India, star tortoises (Geochelone elegans) have been traditionally kept as pets in many homes, their owners believing that they bring good luck and fortune. The unique star-like yellow pattern on their shell is making them an increasingly popular target for illegal wildlife trade. The number of tortoises being smuggled is staggering. Wildlife experts have estimated more than 50,000 are illegally collected from just one group of villages each year alone. After being transported to eastern India, the tortoises are shipped off to other Asian countries like Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and China.read more about the illegal trade here;http://www.theguardian.com/environment/gallery/2015/nov/20/fading-stars-indias-illegal-tortoise-trade-in-pictures

CHICKEN AND MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS!!!

The poultry value chain holds the key to sustainable millennium goals and food security. Chicken and eggs are nutrient packed with various minerals and vitamins essential for growth and development.

The nutritional needs of children can be provided by incorporating eggs and chicken in their food. The MDG, to achieve universal basic education can be accomplished by encouraging children to go to school,by providing a meal /day for pupils.

The school feeding programme can utilize eggs and chicken in the packaged food, this will enhance growth and development, proper brain development, with good muscle development. This will keep the children in school, healthy, strong and eager to learn.

 The training in poultry rearing and production can achieve four of the MDGS;
 1) eradicate poverty.2)reduce child mortality, 3)improve maternal health and 4 )encourage universal primary education.

When low income earners are empowered with starting stock, trained in poultry keeping, not only will they have balanced meals but also generate income from sale of products. Training and establishment of mini poultry in schools, will provide the eggs and chicken for the feeding programme. This will also generate income for school, thus expanding the stock.

This initiative will also boost the school agric project,as more students will be interested in poultry rearing. This they can replicate in their communities thus eradicating poverty, reduce child mortality and prevent maternal death. Get chicky and ensure food security.!!!!

WOMEN IN AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SECURITY.

Food security can only be achieved if more food is produced and food waste and loss is eliminated from the value chain.

Women make up the bulk of those in the farming business, and the production of their produce can be doubled to increase revenue and feed the nation.

The women in agriculture started farming and rearing animals because they wanted to feed their family and help in running of the home, but over the years this has evolved to a business where they rear and sell making money for themselves.

Women in agriculture produce more food that could actually ensure food security but are constrained due to the following:

 1) preservation equipment.
 2) processing technology.
3)education on proper handling of food.
 4)Transportation.

Women in agriculture produce their crops, but lack technical strength in terms of preservation methods
The.women produce grains, that when harvested are stored in sack, or spread on the floor, thus exposing the product to rodents and other pests.
This results in food loss and contamination which reduces revenue of the farmer but also the amount of food available for consumption, thus disrupting the food security chain.

When women have access to modern storage facilities such as silos, more crops will get to market .The provision of such facilities at community level, divisional level or district zoning, will give more women access.

Organizing the farmers per zone and also providing a platform for marketing will ensure more food will get too the market.

Processing technology :the women in the fishing business and poultry are majorly affected. The fish harvested can be sold live, but because they lack processing equipment they cant process the fish into smoked variety. This  results in reduced income,as the majority of the fish are left unprocessed and marketers will offer to buy it off at ridiculous prices.

When processing technology is available  to these women, such drying stoves/kiln provided at community level, more fish will make it to the market and food security will be a reality.

The education on powered eggs will be an advantage in the poultry industry. When large quantities of eggs  are available, storing methods are very important to the marketability of the eggs.

Food handling techniques are very important to food processing and packaging.

Women in agriculture should be educated on proper handling to prevent food waste and food loss.

When crops are harvested ,there are proper handling methods to prevent spoilage;like vegetables, these should be handled with care and store in an aerated environment to prevent rottenness. These must also not be lumped on ,but are stacked on platforms to keep them fresh

Modern techniques on handling will ensure more food get to market to prevent food loss and food waste.

Transportation of these produce is a major key to food security. When roads are accessible more produce get to destination and in record time ensuring fresh foods are available.

The women face a lot of constraints that if addressed in form of training, seminars and provision of infrastructure such as light, electricity, good roads and telecommunication devices,

food security will be a reality. Empower the women!!! feed the nation.

LIVESTOCK INSURANCE AND INDUSTRIALIZATION.

              LIVESTOCK INSURANCE AND INDUSTRIALIZATION.

Agric insurance is important for the growth and development of the agricultural sector in any economy. The essence of agric insurance is to protect farmers from losses resulting from hazards such as accidents, death of livestock, condemnation of carcass, flood, fire, pest, disease and emergency control measures such as in case of outbreaks of African swine fever, bird flu e.t.c

Agric insurance is also relevant in abattoir operations, with particular reference to condemnation of carcasses, organs in disease conditions and transportation accident.

The benefits of insurance are enormous, aside the monetary compensation, there is access to professionals who over- see the project. Certified animals are procured to start the project, data of farmers collected..This  encourages proper record keeping and disease control measures.

When animal husbandry projects are insured, there will be proper management ,food safety will be enhanced and wholesome products will be in our market.

The fear of running at a loss is the reason why producers cut corners, avoid the necessary management protocol such as vaccination, reporting outbreaks, processing dead animals. This results use of unconventional feeding practices and unauthorized drugs in production to attain market weight early.

The possibility of export will increase, if there is a structure that ensure compliance to international standards. This will ensure rapid industrialization in that sector which will promote economic growth.

The agric insurance sector though a growing industry, still has a lot to do to encourage farmers to insure their businesses. A large percentage of farmers dont access this opportunity , because of lack of proper knowledge of the policy.

This is to their detriment and to the loss of the economy on a larger scale. The farmers /producers need financial bodies to work with them,to give soft landing in case of loss and to pay commensurate compensations in cases of emergency control of diseases.

The farmers cant access certain loans because they are not insured; premium are not fixed and certain diseases are not included in the policies.
