French Government Starts Phase-Out of Glyphosate with Online Farmer Platform and Herbicide Tax.The French government has released its glyphosate ‘phase-out’ online platform, in an attempt to help farmers across the country to stop using the world’s most used herbicide before 2020. French President Emmanuel Macron’s office stated that the online platorm has been designed “to have a declarative site where every farmer who wishes can commit themselves either to say that they have already stopped using glyphosate, or to say that they have committed to stop its use in three years.” Macron himself stated that the platform is for “all farmers who are ready to go sign up, make it visible, put pressure on others, create traceability to say everything is done without glyphosate.”

RESEARCH: GOATS ARE LIKE DOGS.

RESEARCH: GOATS ARE LIKE DOGS. Researchers at Queen Mary University in London peered into the beady square pupil eyes of a goat and asked the single worst question one can ask about a goat: “Could this thing be more like a dog?” A new study published in the Biological Letters did not ascertain if they could be trained, or even learn to stop chewing on your furniture. The study simply sought to see if goats would appeal to humans like dogs, horses, and the occasional cat do. This is a fascinating idea, as noted by Dr Jenna Kiddie, a senior lecturer in animal behavior and welfare at Anglia Ruskin University. RESEARCH: GOATS ARE LIKE DOGS. While a great deal of research has been done examining the relationship between humans and “working” animals like dogs and horses, very little has been done examining the relationship between humans and other domesticated animals, like the goat. To test the relationship between goat and man, the researchers gave the goats a box and made it increasingly difficult to open the box. The goats, when faced with the impossible task, then did what dogs do and peered up at the humans “imploringly.”

AGRIBUSINESS: How to use goats to remove invasive species. Rieper-Estes’ goats are more than your average grazers. The so-called Greedy Goats of Northwest Arkansas are a group of 20 whose job it is to travel around the city of Fayetteville, Arkansas, and eat invasive species. In Northwest Arkansas, that mostly includes bush honeysuckle and Chinese privet, the goats’ favorites. “They’re not hungry goats,” Rieper-Estes told Earther. “They’re greedy goats. They’re out in the pasture before we take them to work, and we get them into the transportation by putting oats in there. Then, they eat all day.” #agribusiness

AGRIBUSINESS: U.S. chicken farms are so dirty, meat has to be washed with chlorine before being sold for human consumption.

AGRIBUSINESS: U.S. chicken farms are so dirty, meat has to be washed with chlorine before being sold for human consumption. Chlorine water is routinely sprayed all over U.S. chicken meat, believe it or not, as a way to destroy pathogens and other harmful compounds that are rampant in America’s disgusting factory farms. Most of Europe has much higher standards than the U.S. when it comes to rearing animals for meat production, hence why American meat typically isn’t welcomed there. AGRIBUSINESS: U.S. chicken farms are so dirty, meat has to be washed with chlorine before being sold for human consumption. But now that the U.K. is “independent” from the E.U. governance, it’s apparently open game for American imports – including potentially disease-ridden chicken meat that, in addition to possibly containing harmful bacteria, is loaded with bleach chemicals that are harmful to human health.

Muturi, a 24-year-old cassava farmer and recent graduate of Kenya’s Egerton University, founded Bites Cassava Millers Ltd. in Nyeri, Kenya. In 2013 he began to explore ways to extract extra value from cassava, a staple that many considered “poor man’s food. Nickson Muturi harvests cassava on his farm in Kenya. In the process, he developed ways to turn cassava into flour and inexpensive animal feed. His work earned him a 2014 Agribiz4Africa award.Cassava is a tuberous plant, rich in carbohydrates. Muturi considers the tuber “hidden gold” and wants to tell “as many people as possible, especially those in harsh climatic conditions, how they can use cassava to transform their lives.” AGRIBUSINESS: CASSAVA SUCCESS STORIES. To produce flour from the tuber, Muturi cuts cassava into small pieces and soaks the pieces in water to clean them of any chemicals. He then adds a sodium preservative, puts the pieces into polythene bags and places the bags in the sun so the pieces will dry. The drying method is “environment-friendly and makes the drying process faster,” he says. He then mills the dry pieces into flour and sieves it to remove large particles. Muturi uses the plant’s leaves and stems for animal feed. “I ensure that nothing goes to waste,” he says, adding that his methods can be applied to other foods like rice, yams, maize, millet and sorghum.

Agribusiness: AgriProtein ,a startup grows maggots from waste to feed animals.

Agribusiness: AgriProtein ,a startup grows maggots from waste to feed animals. AgriProtein. The world urgently needs new sustainable sources of protein. A growing population, scarce water and land resources, and declining natural fish stocks make this more critical than ever. Industrial farming of chickens, pigs and fish relies on protein from two sources: land-based grains and marine captured fishmeal. Agricultural protein requires vast amounts of land and water, while the sea-caught alternative has material consequences for marine life. Increased global food demand and environmental limits have caused prices of both protein sources to soar in recent years. Agribusiness: AgriProtein ,a startup grows maggots from waste to feed animals. AgriProtein is leading a new industry called nutrient recycling. It is a business that grows maggots from waste collected from markets, farms, households and businesses. The maggots are processed into a highly nutritious protein supplement that substitutes fish meal in animal feed. Using fly larvae fed on existing organic waste, AgriProtein has developed and tested a new large scale and sustainable source of natural protein. The bioconversion process takes organic waste streams from food factories, supermarkets, farms and restaurants, and recycles these into valuable products: an insect based complete protein – MagMeal™, an extracted fat – MagOil™ and a rich residual soil conditioner – MagSoil™. AGRIBUSINESS :The impact of weather on cow's milk. Dairy cattle in a farm. Feeding balanced rations that meet the chemical and physical needs of the cow is imperative for their good milk production.Milk composition is economically important to the producers and processors and nutritionally vital to the consumers. AGRIBUSINESS :The impact of weather on cow's milk. A rising trend of health conscious consumers and the introduction of milk pricing system based on quality has compelled processors to focus on the milk component rather quantity. AGRIBUSINESS :The impact of weather on cow's milk. AGRIBUSINESS :The impact of weather on cow's milk. Paul Mambo, a dairy consultant with SNV Kenya, says that many factors affect and alter the milk components among them nutrition, genetics and environment, season, age of the cow, stage of lactation, level of production and diseases.Farmers should, therefore, ensure the feeds they offer their cows are balanced, that is, have energy, protein, minerals and vitamins. “The major milk components are water, fat, protein, lactose and minerals. Nutrition or the feeding management practices in a dairy farm can have a major impact on the levels of milk fat and protein concentration. Fat concentration is sensitive to dietary changes,” he says.AGRIBUSINESS :The impact of weather on cow's milk. AGRIBUSINESS :The impact of weather on cow's milk. According to him, milk fat and protein component tend to be high during the rainy season and lowest during the dry seasons, variations that are attributed to changes in both the type of feed and climatic conditions. When cows go out for pasture in the dry periods, the milk fat is reduced and it is at this time when some farmers cannot afford quality fodder and quite often turn to rice and wheat straws.

Roundup Linked to Global Boom in Celiac Disease and Gluten Intolerance.

Roundup Linked to Global Boom in Celiac Disease and Gluten Intolerance. Celiac disease, gluten intolerance and irritable bowel syndrome are on the rise worldwide, and that rise has taken place in parallel with the increased use of glyphosate (Roundup) herbicide, shows a new US peer-reviewed paper from Dr. Anthony Samsel and Dr. Stephanie Seneff. The review has been published in the Journal of Interdisciplinary Toxicology. Roundup is linked in Samsel and Seneff’s new review paper to a major increase in celiac disease. A recent estimate suggests that one in twenty people in North America and Western Europe now suffer from this gluten intolerant disease. “All of the known biological effects of glyphosate – cytochrome P450 inhibition, disruption of synthesis of aromatic amino acids, chelation of transition metals, and antibacterial action – contribute to the pathology of celiac disease,” Samsel and Seneff’s paper states. Monsanto’s Glyphosate (Roundup) has become the number one selling herbicide worldwide, due to the increase in the planting of Roundup Ready GM Crops.Celiac disease is a digestive disease that damages the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients from food. People who have celiac disease cannot tolerate gluten, a protein in wheat, rye, and barley. Gluten is found mainly in foods but may also be found in everyday products such as medicines, vitamins, and lip balms. When people with celiac disease eat foods or use products containing gluten, their immune system responds by damaging or destroying villi—the tiny, fingerlike protrusions lining the small intestine. Villi normally allow nutrients from food to be absorbed through the walls of the small intestine into the bloodstream. Without healthy villi, a person becomes malnourished, no matter how much food one eats. It increase the toxin burden leaking into the blood stream) and inclusion of probiotics (superior quality such as ‘entralive maximal’ from Entrapro) which also contain essential prebiotics plus a high quality enzyme formula along with eating whole foods in a manner easy to digest – for several YEARS (such as soups and cooked foods) to enable the gut lining to heal. Many gluten free religites don’t get better because the underlying leaky gut is not repaired.

South Africa Government Rejects Monsanto’s GMO Triple Stacked Maize.

South Africa Government Rejects Monsanto’s GMO Triple Stacked Maize. The African Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) has welcomed the decision of the South African biosafety authorities, rejecting Monsanto’s application for the commercial release of its GM drought tolerant triple stacked maize: MON 87460 x MON 89034 x NK 603. At its meeting on the 2nd October 2018, the Executive Council: GMO Act, refused to authorize the GM maize for commercial growing as it found that the data provided by Monsanto was insufficient to demonstrate the claimed drought tolerant and insect resistant efficacy of the GM event. In particular, the EC found that the drought tolerant field trial data presented by Monsanto for trials conducted over a period of 5 years (2014-2018) in Hopetown, Orania, Lutzville and Malelane, were sorely wanting.

Organic Food Consumption Lowers Overall Cancer Risks in Large-Scale Study of French Adults.

Organic Food Consumption Lowers Overall Cancer Risks in Large-Scale Study of French Adults. The results are in on one of the first, large-scale studies on organic food consumption and cancer risks and they are significant and encouraging. It is widely recognized we need to do much more in preventing cancer, as opposed to treating it, and this study suggests that organic food may be an important piece of the puzzle. A team of French government scientists analyzed 68,946 citizens in the NutriNet-Santé cohort. Individuals were surveyed to determine if those who ate more organic foods had lower cancer rates. Their new journal article, published online by JAMA Internal Medicine this week (that’s the prestigious journal put out by the American Medical Association), reports their key findings: people consuming organic food most regularly had 25% lower overall cancer risk compared to the group of people reporting very little or no consumption of organic food.

AGRIBUSINESS : Zero food waste as food expiration dates undergo a revolution.

AGRIBUSINESS : Zero food waste as food expiration dates undergo a revolution. New automated grocery-pricing system from Israel promises to slash food waste, cut prices for consumers, and increase profits for supermarkets. About half of all the food produced in the world is wasted every year. That’s about two billion tons of food, worth billions of dollars. It’s a shocking statistic, and at the end of the day, it’s not just the supermarkets or food producers that pay the price – it’s all of us. A hungry planet with limited resources, a high carbon footprint, and rapidly changing climate cannot afford to throw food in the bin.A new Israeli startup, Wasteless, hopes to help cut some of this waste with a new AI system that will transform how supermarkets approach food expiration dates. AGRIBUSINESS : Zero food waste as food expiration dates undergo a revolution. “Food expiration dates are the main cause of retail waste and the cost is tremendous, both to business and to the environment,” says Oded Omer, co-founder of Wasteless. “Food is the single largest product in landfills, where it emits extremely harmful gases, including methane.’’ Wasteless, which was founded in 2017, has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) technology that can offer customers a variable pricing system based on a product’s expiration date. A carton of milk that is set to expire in a few days will cost less than one due to expire in 10 days.It sounds simple, but the technology behind is not. The Wasteless pricing engine employs a branch of machine learning called reinforcement learning, which automatically maps inventory stock and time of day into a series of optimal prices.

Agribusiness : How to fight cancer naturally with turmeric.

How to fight cancer naturally with turmeric. Extensive research is being conducted in many laboratories across the globe on the anti-cancer properties of turmeric. Being a powerful anti-oxidant, turmeric can protect cells from getting damaged. Turmeric is now being used as a complementary therapy with conventional cancer treatment. Laboratory tests have found that turmeric interferes with many critical molecular pathways that cause the growth and spread of cancer. Recent studies have concentrated on the anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric and if this could help with the prevention and treatment of cancer. Scientists believe that the active ingredient of turmeric, curcumin is a well-known antioxidant and thus help in fighting free radicals which cause cell damage. Turmeric is also known to interfere with several key molecular pathways which lead to cancer development. Turmeric kills cancer cells One of the principal reasons why turmeric is becoming cherished as a health aid is due to its anti-cancer property. Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, has been widely researched upon for its anti-cancer effect. The exact cause of cancer has not been identified but it is thought of as a disturbance in cell signaling pathways that gradually affects proteins that regulate cell life and activity. This disturbance causes the cells to be immortal and hyperproliferative and thus cancer spreads throughout the body. A study published in Biofactors, 2013 states that curcumin’s anti-cancer action is a result of inhibition of cell signaling pathways at multiple levels. A recent study published in Molecules 2015 identifies various targets that curcumin acts on to exert anti-cancer effect and these include :1) Transcription factors (they control the expression of genes) 2)Growth factors. 3)Inflammatory proteins. 4)Cancer causing molecules.5) Various proteins involved in regulation of cell cycle and cell death This multi-faceted action of curcumin makes it a novel anti-cancer agent that holds promise for future treatment options in cancer.

Financial model template for startup.

Financial model template for startup. This is designed to be a simple end-to-end financial model for an early-stage startup. The model outputs standard financial statements and key operating metrics based on a wide range of user inputs, and is highly customizable and entirely transparent. Unfortunately, most financial models are built for established businesses, and therefore force assumptions (like terminal growth) and calculations (EBITDA multiples come to mind) that a startup has no need for. The model seeks to serve as a robust option for entrepreneurs that wish to analyze the operating side of their business, but does not constrict against pivots and technological disruptions. The Income Statement sheet allows you to model expenses and revenues as they occur. Unlike the Cash Flow Statement, which records movement of actual cash, the Income Statement records and projects items like depreciation, which see no physical cash flowing each year, but are accounted for over multiple years.more

Ten Experiments To Test Your New Business Hypothesis.

Ten Experiments To Test Your New Business Hypothesis. You know that a new idea has gained dominance when it becomes practically a cliché. That is what I’ve seen happen with the “Lean Startup” philosophy of viewing your startup as a scientific experiment in search of a business model. This started as a new idea, then became popularized, and now people view it as common sense and practically a cliché. And I definitely am one of those people who regularly advises our portfolio companies to think creatively about how to experiment on their operating assumptions. The challenge is: what experiments can you run to test your hypotheses? I’ve looked all over, but to my surprise, I have not been able to find a good collection of appropriate experiments online. So, I’ve gathered below some of the experiments that our portfolio companies and other startups we know have found most informative. If you have further ideas, please add them in the comments. To structure your experiments, I suggest use the Javelin Experiment Board. Step I: Explore the problem and the market. Seek first to understand, then to be understood. VETERINARY MEDICINE : 7 REASONS WHY DOG BREEDING IS GOOD.

VETERINARY MEDICINE : 7 REASONS WHY DOG BREEDING IS GOOD..Breeding dogs inherited a very bad reputation — mostly because of irresponsible breeders! Yet, a lot of dog breeders are full of love and happy to give all the time, money and care that are required to breed dogs ethically. Here are the top reasons why dog breeding is good. There is no miracle in dog breeding. On one hand, if it is performed by somebody smart and willing to learn, then the activity will be done properly. Such breeders produce champions, or at least, healthy dogs with great temperaments. On the other hand, if the breeder is profit-obsessed and happy to cut corners on his dogs’ health, the resulting litters of puppies will encounter issues over time. Specializing Breeds One of the many reasons why breeding dogs can be beneficial is due to specialized breeding. In a previous article, we mentioned that selective breeding was the procedure of breeding purposefully selected dogs with the intention to produce, preserve, or remove specific physical characteristics, mental traits, health conditions, skills, and aptitudes to perform specific tasks. This practice can be done naturally and selectively. If you use specialized breeding, you produce dogs that show the desired traits and remove unwanted genetic traits. Originally, dogs were adopted and domesticated in order to be useful, so specialized breeding is meant to also reinforce specific skills from a given dog. VETERINARY MEDICINE : 7 REASONS WHY DOG BREEDING IS GOOD. The breeding of dogs to enforce a skill that is prevalent in a breed has been used for centuries and is a great benefit of breeding as it can help an entire society, for example, police dogs, hunting dogs and Seeing Eye dogs. All specialized breeds that help the world around them, all thanks to a skill and trait that was seen in their breed, and reinforced through selective breeding. The German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, and Border Collie have all benefited from this specialized breeding over hundreds of years so that they are now excellent at their jobs. And if you do choose to breed a specialized dog, you also reinforce these positive traits and improve skills in the breed if the breeding program is carried out correctly and safely.

AGRIBUSINESS : One way to reduce food waste is to use it to make soil healthier. Imagine that one-third of cars manufactured by Ford or GM were never even driven once, but instead were left to rust and ended up in landfills. This exact situation is true today in agriculture, where up to 40 percent of food produced every year in the United States is never eaten. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the United States generates over 39 million tons of food waste yearly. Strawberries rot on the vine for lack of labor to pick them. Food spoils during transport, at the grocery store or in our homes. More is lost during processing, due to inefficiencies and lack of markets for byproducts. AGRIBUSINESS : One way to reduce food waste is to use it to make soil healthier. Food waste contains valuable nutrients that can make soil healthier and more productive. A research group at Colorado State University is working with Leprino Foods, a global supplier of dairy products, to explore the potential for transforming lactose – the natural sugar in milk – into a resource that can enhance agricultural sustainability. Manufacturing dairy products generates large amounts of leftover natural materials, including lactose. Currently the dominant market for lactose is for baby formula, but companies like Leprino produce more lactose than the formula market demands. Rather than sending the rest to landfills, they partnered with our team at Colorado State University to explore potential agricultural uses for it.

AGRIBUSINESS: An Entrepreneur Quickly Grew His Chickpea Pasta Company by Being Scrappy and Bold . Brian Rudolph said he had a pretty simple realization about four years ago: The 23-year-old didn't have to launch a technology company. Instead, he figured that he could create a company around a homemade pasta he had been making out of chickpeas, since regular pasta hurt his stomach. So in 2014 he partnered with his brother Scott and launched Banza, where he had the chance to employ many of the tactics used in the tech industry. Banza, which says its products have "double the protein, four times the fiber and nearly half the net carbs" compared to typical pasta, has proven to be a success. A year after its launch, the product landed on store shelves, and it was named one of 2015's best inventions by Time Magazine. The brand can now be found in 10,000 U.S. stores, including Target, Walmart and Whole Foods.

It's not like his company's products, a wafer-like cookie based on Dutch treats called stroopwafels, need to be improved. Rip Van Wafels is already sold in 12,000 stores, including Fairway and Starbucks, as well as available in the kitchens of big tech firms, including Square. But Pruisken won't rest on Rip Van's six successful years of business. "There's so many brands and there's so much innovation,” he says. "The idea is to basically launch every two years a healthier product but still maintain the taste and design."

Veterinary Medicine : signs, causes and treatment of swollen paws in dogs.

Veterinary Medicine : signs, causes and treatment of swollen paws in dogs. Swollen paws are a common problem for dogs. Although the condition is not usually dangerous, depending on the cause of the problem, it can be very uncomfortable and even highly painful as paws are very sensitive. The most obvious sign is limping, favoring a leg, or hobbling and special attention to the top and underside of the paws for swelling and pain is fundamental to an assessment of any kind of lameness. The primary cause of swollen paws are often caused by a foreign object getting trapped between the pads/toes of the dog’s foot. Insect or spider bites, puncture wounds, broken toes, fractured claws, and constant licking/chewing (as with allergies or other source of chronic irritation) are other common causes. Pad burns from running on hot asphalt are also common during the summertime. Immediate Care; 1)Check the paw for objects caught between the pads/toes. 2)Check for insect stings or puncture wounds (though often hard to pinpoint). 3)If possible, remove trapped object with tweezers and wash the paw with warm, soapy water. 4)If you can’t see anything trapped in the paw, check the dog’s leg to ensure no constricting material is present (which can easily cause swelling). 5)Soaking the paw in an Epsom salt solution is often of benefit, regardless of the cause. Ten minutes in comfortably hot water (in a tub or basin) with Epsom salts dissolved within is typically an excellent short-term solution for swelling. If you can see an obvious lesion, the swelling does not quickly disappear, or the dog continues to favor the paw, call your vet for further advice. Veterinary attention in these cases is almost always in order. Dogs swollen paws:signs, causes and treatment.

A constipated dog, especially if it is well-trained and evacuates at regular intervals daily, is described as being constipated if it is experiencing difficult bowel movements and physical distress. (In addition, severe diarrhea and colitis may lead to straining.) Grass particles, matted feces, string, or other objects in or around the anus is also indicative of constipation. The size of the feces will be abnormally small and once the condition has progressed, lethargy, vomiting, and loss of appetite may develop. Dog Constipation Causes and Treatment. Agro-Veterinary : Why Do Dogs Eat Grass?.

Why Do Dogs Eat Grass?.Dogs love to munch away on grass, and some even make it part of their daily routine. Fortunately, most experts believe it isn't something you should worry about. So why exactly do they gobble up that green stuff in your yard? Dogs, unlike their catty counterparts, are not carnivores. But they're not like your garden-variety omnivores, either. For tens of thousands of years, these opportunistic scavengers have devoured anything and everything, as long as it fulfilled their basic dietary requirements. The modern dog, partly because of evolution and domestication, is no longer like its ancestors, which frequently ate their prey entirely, including the stomach contents of plant-eating animals. Instead, dogs today seek out plants as an alternative food source. Most commonly the plant is grass -- since that is what is closest at hand -- but wild canines are known to eat fruits, berries, and other vegetable matter, too. Clearly, dogs can find their nutrients in a wide range of plant foods, but that doesn't explain why Fido usually throws up after eating grass. A dog will seek out a natural remedy for a gassy or upset stomach, and grass, it seems, may do the trick. When ingested, the grass blade tickles the throat and stomach lining; this sensation, in turn, may cause the dog to vomit, especially if the grass is gulped down rather than chewed. Although dogs don't typically graze on large amounts of grass like a cow, they may nibble on grass, chew on it for a while, and not throw up (an unwell dog will tend to gulp the grass down in big bites and then throw up). This may be because they find the texture of the grass palatable, or just because they need to add a little roughage to their diet. Why Do Dogs Eat Grass?.

Kidney Diets for Cats: What to Look for.

Kidney Diets for Cats: What to Look for.Kidney disease is extremely common in cats. It can develop quickly, because of something like an infection or exposure to antifreeze, or over many years for no apparent reason. Symptoms and treatment for kidney disease vary depending the specifics of the case, but oftentimes, a diet change can help. The kidneys have many roles in the body. Two of these major roles include removing waste products from the bloodstream and conserving water. When kidney function declines past a certain point, toxic waste products like urea and phosphorous begin to back up within the body, which can make a cat feel terrible. Poor kidney function also leads to dehydration because more water than normal is lost in the urine. Both of these problems can be at least partially addressed with diet. Foods that have a high water content can help prevent dehydration, and when cats eat a diet made from moderate amounts of high quality protein, they produce less urea and phosphorous that then needs to be eliminated. Dats who are in the early stages of kidney disease often thrive when fed an appropriate, over-the-counter food. Canned foods are best because they contain much more water than dry foods, but you still need to make sure the diet is made from high-quality ingredients. Look for animal-based protein sources (chicken, beef, salmon, etc.) that sound like something you might eat rather than a byproduct of a manufacturing process. If your cat simply will not eat canned food, choose a dry food that is made from high-quality ingredients and do everything you can to encourage your cat to drink a lot of water. If your cat eats dry food, you may need to start giving subcutaneous fluids (fluids injected under the skin) sooner than you would otherwise.
