Agribusiness: Building a garri empire with innovative ideas.
Echbee Foods, turning ordinary garri to extraordinary products. We are building a garri empire one recipe at a time providing nutritious food for children, empowering women and ensuring food security.
Why garri? why not? There is no home in Africa where garri is not on the menu at least twice a day, crunch the numbers and see the possibilities. If a larger % of the population eat garri, the cassava is here in the country, processing is done here then there is a market, a perpetual market.
Introduction of garri to people is not necessary the catch here is to show how ordinary garri can be nutritious and affordable. Garri is easily accessible, affordable and a larger portion of the population are accustomed to the food.
Echbee foods thus decided to fortify what was already common in most homes to achieve our purpose of balanced meal with garri. Garri which is the most common by -product is food for over 800 million people in the world, thus fortifying the garri to produce a highly nutritious cereal can generate over 120 billion naira as revenue.
Welcome to the garri empire, a world of possibilities. We are changing the way people eat garri, one recipe at a time.
The signature product of Echbee foods is our cassava flakes, which can be a snack or cereal.

EDUCATION AND EGG POWDER!!!.
The level of education in developing countries has nose-dived and data gathered showed that fewer children are going to school. This trend is fueled by the fact that many of the parents are indigent and need all the help they can get from their children and other family members on the farm.Wednesday, April 27, 2016
The water hyacinth and the girl-child education..
The role of women in agriculture and nation building cannot be overemphasized.Majority of food production, from planting to processing, and sales are handled by the women. The women mostly take their girl -child to the farm at a very tender age because of the belief that the boys should be educated instead.
In developing countries where they know the value of education but are financially constrained, still opt to fund the education of the boys. The number of boys in school out-way the number of girls, not only because of lack of funds, but also because of certain cultures that restricts girls during their monthly cycle.
Girls miss school because of pain, ill heath and their monthly cycle. Girls in poor nation miss school basically because they lack the resources to buy sanitary towels, and they rather stay at home than be seen dripping blood. The use of rags, old clothes and papers are not only unhygienic but also dangerous. These are usually sources of infection because use and disposal expose them to health risk.
The lack of running water or other sources of water makes the period so difficult, they will rather sit still in a carved up hole. Water hyacinth is a source of relief for the girls,as it not only provides means of livelihood for the parents, but keep them in school by production of durable super absorbent sanitary towels.
Sanitary pads can be made from water hyacinth, these are made from a prototype and the production outfit is set up as a cottage industry. This employs the women in the community and also keeps the girls in school. Paper made from the water hyacinth can be used for exercise books that are easily accessible to the children.
The Water Hyacinth Sanitary Pad is biodegradable sanitary pads out , the production of a locally made pad provides girls and women a low cost, biodegradable product that sustains income-generating jobs and provides girls with access to necessary personal hygiene products, with the goal of breaking the stigma around menstruation and keep girls in school. The jani pad is the product name of the pad made from water hyacinth, they are working with village volunteers to help women and girls.

CAMEL AND THE FOOD CHAIN.

.
Women in Kenya have taken processing of camel to a whole new level. They process, package and sell dried camel meat and also process and package the milk as yoghurt.
The first camel milk cooperative society called Anolei Women Camel Milk Cooperative in Isiolo county was launched this year. It started processing and packaging camel meat, which is locally known as nyirnyir. Gerald Mureithi, the manager, says the meat goes through various processes before it is packaged.First the meat is sliced into rows, then it is sun dried and after drying, it is cut into small pieces, deep fried and eventually packaged. A 50 gramme packet of dried camel meat costs Sh100.“When stored at room temperature, the dried camel meat has a shelve life of one month and if stored in the freezer, it can stay for almost three months,” says Mureithi, adding that they also make camel yoghurt.
He says camel milk is pasteurised then starch and sugar is added to it before being innoculated with bacteria culture to help in fermenting. They sell the camel products to the local market. Mureithi says they now want to venture into supermarkets and other retail markets.A 150 ml bottle goes for Sh40, the 250 ml at Sh60 while 500ml and one litre bottles will cost you Sh120 and Sh140 respectively.
“We receive about 800 to 3,000 or more litres of camel milk daily from our members. Our main market for camel milk is in Eastleigh but during the rainy season when production is high, the market is low and that is why we came up with the value addition,” says Mureithi.
The women cooperative has 29 active members and there are other 91 members who are passive and only supply milk to the active ones.

SOCIAL PROTECTION , WOMEN AND FOOD SECURITY.

Social protection; simply refers to programmes, policies ,laws and regulation that are designed to reduce poverty and vulnerability by providing a way of escape by tackling these issues .Social protection seeks to support those that are at risk because of sickness, illness, disability ,exclusion and old age.Social protection is to provide help to those in need and prevent shock caused by these factors. The sector of the society basically affected are women and children; they are at risk of shock caused by lack, discrimination, disability, poverty e.t.c.
Social protection is vital to food security as the women and children which are part of the work force are segregated/discriminated and holed up by laws that hamper productivity. The land laws are big issues in certain parts of Africa, where land rights are given to men; how will the women make a living without farmlands? how about education? how many girls are in school/or learning a skill that will be a source of income. Traditional beliefs such as female genital mutilation, this must be addressed; social protection must cover all unlawful acts and practices that prevent the provision of normal basic amenities and human rights .Equal land rights, employment opportunities,a means of livelihood, right to life, education, primary health care and a cell-group where there are interactions, discussion and training is the best form of social protection that will ensure economic growth, and food security.

WOMEN IN AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SECURITY.
Women make up the bulk of those in the farming business, and the production of their produce can be doubled to increase revenue and feed the nation.
The women in agriculture started farming and rearing animals because they wanted to feed their family and help in running of the home, but over the years this has evolved to a business where they rear and sell making money for themselves.
Women in agriculture produce more food that could actually ensure food security but are constrained due to the following:
1) preservation equipment.
2) processing technology.
3)education on proper handling of food.
4)Transportation.
Women in agriculture produce their crops, but lack technical strength in terms of preservation methods
The.women produce grains, that when harvested are stored in sack, or spread on the floor, thus exposing the product to rodents and other pests.
This results in food loss and contamination which reduces revenue of the farmer but also the amount of food available for consumption, thus disrupting the food security chain.
When women have access to modern storage facilities such as silos, more crops will get to market .The provision of such facilities at community level, divisional level or district zoning, will give more women access.
Organizing the farmers per zone and also providing a platform for marketing will ensure more food will get too the market.
Processing technology :the women in the fishing business and poultry are majorly affected. The fish harvested can be sold live, but because they lack processing equipment they cant process the fish into smoked variety. This results in reduced income,as the majority of the fish are left unprocessed and marketers will offer to buy it off at ridiculous prices.
When processing technology is available to these women, such drying stoves/kiln provided at community level, more fish will make it to the market and food security will be a reality.
The education on powered eggs will be an advantage in the poultry industry. When large quantities of eggs are available, storing methods are very important to the marketability of the eggs.
Food handling techniques are very important to food processing and packaging.
Women in agriculture should be educated on proper handling to prevent food waste and food loss.
When crops are harvested ,there are proper handling methods to prevent spoilage;like vegetables, these should be handled with care and store in an aerated environment to prevent rottenness. These must also not be lumped on ,but are stacked on platforms to keep them fresh
Modern techniques on handling will ensure more food get to market to prevent food loss and food waste.
Transportation of these produce is a major key to food security. When roads are accessible more produce get to destination and in record time ensuring fresh foods are available.

The women face a lot of constraints that if addressed in form of training, seminars and provision of infrastructure such as light, electricity, good roads and telecommunication devices,
food security will be a reality. Empower the women!!! feed the nation.
