EGGS AND YOUR HEALTH.

The egg contains all the nutrient to produce a chick, hence its a power packed meal that promotes growth and development. Eggs are nutrient packed and plays immense roles in various systems in the body. The protein requirement is 0.8g/kg on the average: with the requirement for man is 56g,and woman 46g. The FAO has cautioned that the dietary intake is below the required levels in developing countries hence more protein especially animal protein should be included in diet. One medium egg contains 70-85 calories of which 6.5g is protein. Eggs are nutrient rich and if incorporated in diet on a regular basis will make up for the deficit in protein in the developing countries; hence the truth an egg a day keeps the doctor away. EGG-VALUES; 1) its an health boost, with high level of nutrients it contains it contributes to the general well being of the individual, 2)vitamin source; vitamin B2 which is important for break down of food to energy. vitamin B12 essential for red blood cell production. vitamin A responsible for great vision; eye sight integrity. vitamin E responsible for fighting off free radicals that cause tissue and cellular damage. Vitamin B2 responsible for proper growth. 3) mineral source..iron for blood cells, and maintenance of circulatory integrity. zinc....ensures proper functioning of immune system. phosphorus.......responsible for healthy bones and teeth. iodine...essential for thyroid hormones. selenium.....its an antioxidant that helps reduce cancer risk. Eggs are also used as a weight management tool; a study by Rochester center for obesity stated that eating eggs for breakfast helps limit your calorie intake all day by 400 calories. The mode of action here is that it gives a satiety signal while releasing the nutrients into body, thus maintaining energy level. The cholesterol in eggs are dietary cholesterol not blood cholesterol, the dietary cholesterol are high density lipo proteins which are essential for proper functioning of the body systems. Eggs also linked to intelligence quotient because of choline content in the egg which is responsible for production of cell membrane and also produce signal molecules in brain thus coordinating activities at that level. Eggs also contains lutem and zeaxanthin that are antioxidants with maintain cellular integrity in the retinal thus preventing eye disorders such as cataracts and macular degeneration. These benefits also apply to dogs, a nutritious meal for your dog must include eggs.

AGRIBUSINESS: THE ROLE OF WATER IN POULTRY VALUE CHAIN.

AGRIBUSINESS: THE ROLE OF WATER IN POULTRY VALUE CHAIN. Water though a common commodity, its role in the success of the poultry value chain is very significant. Water is used in various capacities and at various levels. The bio security protocols involve water, for mixing, dilutions of chemicals and washing tools and implements. AGRIBUSINESS: THE ROLE OF WATER IN POULTRY VALUE CHAIN. WATER AS A PERFORMANCE INDICATOR IN POULTRY; 1)water is the most effective administration vehicle for drugs and vitamins. 2) water is a diluent for some vaccines to confer immunity on birds. 3)water is necessary for digestion, a chicken requires twice the amount of water to utilize every kg of feed. 4) water essential for metabolism, fecal elimination and temperature regulation. 5) The egg is about 65% water. 6) The chicken body weight is between 60-75% water depending on age and sex. Water is key to proper growth and development,if birds are deprived of water they go into a moulting stage. This can be used to prolong laying period if properly controlled.Impurities and chemicals in water can cause severe mortalities. AGRIBUSINESS: THE ROLE OF WATER IN POULTRY VALUE CHAIN. The availability of water is essential as it can make or mar project.Ensure regular supply of clean, fresh and cool water.

FEED MILLING IN POULTRY VALUE CHAIN..

Feeding accounts for the majority of the cost of running a poultry venture. The feed quality and quantity is paramount to achieving desired outcome of large eggs, market weight and proper growth and development. The feed milling aspect can be done in 2 ways;1) concentrates can be procured from established feed millers and maize/wheat offal can be mixed at specified proportions. 2) The procurement of all ingredients and making your feed based on a proven formula that will stimulate growth and development. The basic feed requirement are a) carbohydrate b)protein c) mineral sources and d) roughages The common carbohydrate sources are 1)sorghum,millet,cassava chips and maize. The protein sources are fish meal, blood meal, soya beans, groundnut cake meal and cotton seeds. Roughages are in form of brewers spent grain, rice bran and wheat offals, these are supplemented with minerals such as oyster shell, bone meal and dicalcium phosphate. The other inputs are salt, vitamin and minerals All ingredients must be properly crushed and thoroughly mixed to produce a feed of high quality. This is achieved in the milling section by using a crusher and mixer.

WOMEN IN AGRICULTURE AND THE IMPACT ON ECONOMIC GROWTH.

The role of of agriculture in economic growth is significant to any form of globalization. Women plays significant roles in agriculture, they are involved in all sectors and contribute to economic growth and development.

The empowerment schemes should involve more women as they are challenged on so many fronts, the contract farming is a way to encourage more women to join agriculture sector and support those already in the sector. Agriculture has so many facets and aspects that if properly coordinated will bring about food security and increase revenue generation.

The higher the number of people actively involved in this sector, the greater the chances of a sustainable economy.
The use of contract farming in the agricultural sector has the following benefits ; 1) employment opportunities. 2) increase revenue generation. 3)food security. 4)globalization through partnership. 5)broad-based learning platform. 6)empowerment.

What is contract farming and how does it work??

This is basically a platform for growth both for individuals ,companies and the countries involved. The scheme extols the benefits of various aspects of agriculture such as fish farming, piggery, cattle rearing, and poultry.
The various segments are handled by professionals, who corporate with stakeholders already in the agriculture business and these seek out interested candidates in these projects. These people undergo training for a specific period, after which they are provided with tools to start-off.These tools include chicks, drugs, feed, weaners, calves and cages.

The tools also include spaces that are allocated at moderate prices so the farmers can afford this without affecting overhead costs. The contract farmer has access to needed tools to start the project with a memorandum of understanding which states; the expected return and time lapse.

This scheme will allow more players in the agric sector, with access to latest innovations in the field which they can employ to rapidly turn around their investment.

The venture also involves provision of equipment to process the finished products for packaging such as stoves, drying kiln and ovens to process fish. Education on food preservation and provision of such equipment will help prevent losses of crops.A source of water is a very necessary factor for any production, and many women travel long distances to get access to portable water.

A water for all project in forms of wells, boreholes and irrigation systems will boost production and increase sales. The larger percentage of the agricultural products are farmed in the rural areas and this is done by women. Empower the women; feed the world!!! Contract farming is an empowerment model that will fast tract growth in the agriculture sector, because the companies involved in this scheme collect products for sale in international market.

The scheme also involves buying farmers products right from the farm,so the farmer tends its products carefully to attain specified standards.
This scheme will regulate products in the market because only those that meet required specification are purchased.

BEEF PROCESSING AND PACKAGING.

The success of this venture is hinged on slaughtering healthy animals and processing in an hygienic environment. This is rounded off with proper packaging and transportation, which will result in wholesome beef fit for human consumption.

BEEF PROCESSING AND POINTS OF CONTAMINATION./INFECTION.

Beef processing could be done manually or in slaughtering lines, but however you choose to slaughter basic hygiene principles must be observed. Water is an essential resource in any meat processing plant.Water is needed in all the processing segments to ensure that the beef is wholesome and fit for human consumption. The source of water must be clean, portable ..The source is basically pipe-borne water fully treated to ensure that any pathogen is destroyed, pipes must be checked to ensure its not burs ted or have any underground access to sewage. Water is usually used at high pressure to hose the animal down as they are brought into the slap, then every aspect of the processing is interrupted with hosing down before moving to next stage. Transportation to the market is another point of contamination; when processed beef are exposed and transported in dirty basins or carried in dirty wheel barrows. The beef when in transit should be not be tied up in bags,as the heat generated will be a breeding ground for pathogens to thrive. The heat generated will also facilitate spoilage of the beef, resulting in sale of spoiled beef in the market. Beef processing should be carried out in clean environment and transported in clean vehicles that are properly aerated with cooling facilities.Beef should be hung on rails in the vans,to ensure no part of the beef is heated up.This will prevent spoilage of beef before arrival in shops.

Signs of rabies in man.

A young boy was bitten by a stray dog, and in a desperate bid to save his son, a father did the unthinkable. A 41-year-old Jiang X desperate to save his son used his mouth to suck and spit out the blood from the wound multiple times. His son was timely injected with a rabies vaccine while Jiang X abstained and was not injected with rabies vaccine. The man refused treatment, this is the sad twist to the story. His heroic feat would have made the records, if only he had not refused treatment. This goes to show the potential hazard of touching a bleeding site when bitten by a dog. The site should be washed with soap and water, then add an antiseptic/ disinfectant to wipe area before heading to the hospital. If you help a victim make sure you wash and sanitize your hands, and if you have a cut or bruise on your hand is better to stay away from bite wounds to avoid infecting your wound. Two days later Jiang X felt unwell and was diagnosed with rabies by the hospital and Jiang X died despite medical care. Another case is a scratch from a neighbor's dog, Mary thought nothing of it and did not mention to anyone. Mary, an undergraduate lives in a compound with a dog with no vaccination history. The dog just scratched playfully, or so she thought. She later fell ill after a week and it progressed with nervous signs resulting in her death. It was when the nervous signs set in that the dog- rabies factor was linked as the owner of the dog witnessed the scratch. when bitten, scratched or cut when playing with a dog or attacked; wash area with large quantities of water and soap and disinfect area to inactivate virus and head to the hospital for post exposure treatment. washing the area greatly reduces the viral load and increases the prognosis of the case. Water+ soap.....with plenty of water = disinfectant to inactivate virus.

AMAZING WORLD OF CAMEL!!!.

Camels are social animals who roam the deserts in search of food and water with up to 30 other individuals. camels are very peaceful animals who rarely exhibit aggression. Contrary to popular misconception, camels do not store water in their humps. The humps are actually reservoirs for fatty tissue. Concentrating fat in their humps minimizes insulation throughout the rest of the body, thus allowing camels to survive in such extreme hot regions. Asian camels have two humps whereas Arabian camels only have one. Camels have two rows of thick eyelashes to protect their eyes from the desert dust. They are also able to close their nostrils and lips to keep out the dust. Camels’ ears are small and hairy. However their sense of hearing is also extremely strong. Camels can drink up to seven litres of water in a day. Amazing world of camels!!!

PROTEIN IN DOG FOOD.

Dogs rely on protein to provide muscle building blocks and essential amino acids that are necessary for vital cell processes. The lack of protein in diet results in lean muscles, reduced energy, the immune system is compromised and coat is dry and flaky. The sources of protein for dog food may be plant-derived or animal-derived but the important index for selecting a protein source is the biological value. The biological value of protein refers to the availability of the protein in the food to the dog, foods with high biological value are the most suitable sources releasing the necessary nutrients because they are readily digestible. Foods that contain protein of low biological value are not easily digested resulting in low availability of protein to the dog and resultant deficiency. When a dog food is to be assessed ,the protein level must be ascertained to be of high biological value.Proteins of high biological value are expensive so when incorporated to dog food raises the cost while low protein of low biological value are cheap making such dog food cheap. Foods of high biological value are 1) eggs; these are of high biological value ,they are readily accessible in the diet especially when boiled.Eggs hold a higher value than meat. Fish; these include tuna, salmon and fishes high in fish oil because of omega3fatty acids, that helps to give coat a shiny coat. Meat ; beef, chicken, turkey, duck and lamb. The nutritive value of beef is drawn out by drying, then pulverizing, the water ,fat is removed then the remnant is ground into powder and incorporated into meal. This makes the meat readily digestible, making all nutrients available. Protein of low biological value include animal by-products such as hair, hooves, horn and feathers.Dog food that will provide the necessary protein level must have a high biological value ,the higher the value the more digestible the food and the less waste the dog will produce.

The role of water in fish farming.

Water is the natural habitat of fish thus for successful farming venture, the quality must be monitored and controlled. The growth of any fish depends on the water parameters, feeding protocol, feed composition and genetic potential of the fish specie. The sources of water for the fish farming could be any of the following; wells, dams, boreholes ,sea/lagoon and streams. The system of farming intended will dictate the source of water to be used. The earthen pond usually get water from streams,sea/lagoon and channeled springs while the concrete ponds are filled either from wells, boreholes or dams. The most important factor to consider is the quality of the water source. Water for fish farming must possess the following qualities; 1) The PH must be between 7-9,not acidic or too alkaline. 2)The water must be clean and free from contaminants/pollutants such as oil, chemicals, paints or heavy metals. 3)It must be odorless, free from scumb or foam. 4)It must contain enough dissolved oxygen 4mg/litre. 5)It must have a temperature of between 25-32 degree . 6) The carbon dioxide must not be less than 5mg/litre. 7)Ammonia level 0.05mg/litre. 8)Nitrate not less than 50mg/litre. 9)Nitrite not less than 0.30mg/litre. Water quality should be checked at regular intervals using a water kit and necessary adjustment made,a change in any of the water parameters leads to stress in the fish which could lead to severe loses. Oxygen a major index of water quality needs regular monitoring and balancing. The reduced and increased levels of oxygen has a bad effect on the fish. When oxygen level is depleted in the pond,it leads to suffocation and death of the fish, while supersaturation leads togas bubble disease in fish. The supersaturation usually occurs in algae bloom, where there is rapid photosynthesis resulting in small bubbles accumulating in fish intestines, muscles and gills causing the fish to float. The management practices also hamper on the health of the fish,so these must also be taken into consideration in fish farming.
