BIOSECURITY ON THE PIG FARM
. .
Bio security both internal and external ensures health of pigs on the farm. The importance of biosecurity has been stressed and It is important to discern between external and internal bio security.
External biosecurity deals with the strategy of keeping infectious diseases away from farms.
Internal biosecurity, however, revolves around the question how to prevent the spread of contagious diseases within the farm. Is this from pen to pen, from unit to unit or from house to house?
Whichever strategy is chosen, cleaning and disinfection procedures play a major role in internal biosecurity and more particularly in the prevention of disease propagation from one group of animals to the next.
BIOSECURITY ON THE PIG FARM.
Cleaning and disinfection procedures are applied by pig farmers all over the world, in both developed and developing countries. However, they are based on historically grown routines, shaped over years rather than being based on well-considered protocols.
Frequently, practices like these have led to sub-optimal technical results. Creating doubts as to whether the money spent on these protocols contribute to the farm's zootechnical and financial health status.
Indeed, several crises in the industry have often led to cost-cutting measures related to these, whereas a well-designed plan for smart and consistent biosecurity, executed flawlessly, is nevertheless a cornerstone of good biosecurity practices.
Smartphone app assisting pig farmers :Cid Lines's new tablet and smartphone app is a prevention Cost Calculator developed to assist pork producers on how to make the right management decisions for their sanitation protocols.
The app serves as a calculation tool using the farm data it will give a perfect insight into the volume of detergent and disinfectant needed to create a personalized hygiene protocol.

Signs of rabies in man.
A young boy was bitten by a stray dog, and in a desperate bid to save his son, a father did the unthinkable.
A 41-year-old Jiang X desperate to save his son used his mouth to suck and spit out the blood from the wound multiple times. His son was timely injected with a rabies vaccine while Jiang X abstained and was not injected with rabies vaccine.
The man refused treatment, this is the sad twist to the story. His heroic feat would have made the records, if only he had not refused treatment.
This goes to show the potential hazard of touching a bleeding site when bitten by a dog. The site should be washed with soap and water, then add an antiseptic/ disinfectant to wipe area before heading to the hospital.
If you help a victim make sure you wash and sanitize your hands, and if you have a cut or bruise on your hand is better to stay away from bite wounds to avoid infecting your wound.
Two days later Jiang X felt unwell and was diagnosed with rabies by the hospital and Jiang X died despite medical care.
Another case is a scratch from a neighbor's dog, Mary thought nothing of it and did not mention to anyone. Mary, an undergraduate lives in a compound with a dog with no vaccination history. The dog just scratched playfully, or so she thought. She later fell ill after a week and it progressed with nervous signs resulting in her death.
It was when the nervous signs set in that the dog- rabies factor was linked as the owner of the dog witnessed the scratch.
when bitten, scratched or cut when playing with a dog or attacked; wash area with large quantities of water and soap and disinfect area to inactivate virus and head to the hospital for post exposure treatment.
washing the area greatly reduces the viral load and increases the prognosis of the case.
Water+ soap.....with plenty of water = disinfectant to inactivate virus.

PERSONAL HYGIENE ; A KEY TO DISEASE PREVENTION IN FARMS.
Bio security is a set of protocols that are simple but specific that positively influence animal health, public health and ensure food safety. Personal hygiene is a key player in biosecurity.
Personal hygiene plays a vital role in disease prevention. The use of protective clothing and shoes is a major way to stay safe and keep flock clean.
The protective clothing could be disposable or reusable and the level protection required will depend on the case at hand. The normal protective clothing for every day farm use include, the overalls, gloves and boots.
The level of protection becomes more sophisticated in outbreak cases, where disposable protective clothing are worn.
There is also the use of nose guards/respirators, gloves and boots. The use of protective clothing and boots is coupled with hand washing and disinfection. The clothes and boots are to be washed and disinfected after every use.
HAND WASHING: this can be done with soap hand sanitizers and disinfectants. The wash bowls should be placed at key points in the farm, and washing should be done before you enter farm and handle birds.
Alcohol swipes also come in handy after washing, these can be used to ensure the hands are clean and germ free.
Foot dip.and vats filled with disinfectant are placed at entry of farms ,the disinfectants should be changed at regular intervals changed at regular intervals.

VIRKON® S, A POTENT DISINFECTANT.
The use of virkon s can not be overemphasized because of the tremendous success it has achieved in farms, hospitals food industry etc. There are various applications for the virkon s in various sectors, but we will focus on its uses in the farm.
Virkon S a virucidal disinfectant is used in the following ways; 1) foot dip 2)aerial disinfection of buildings in the farm, cages, animal housing e.t.c.3) treatment of water source
The benefits of using virkon s are as following; its potent against various pathogens such as virus, bacteria and fungi ,thus making it suitable as a bio-security tool and also in cases of emergency disease control .It serves multipurpose function and its easy to transport .Its of value in the food industry as it has been proven to eliminate the salmonella super strain, the rate at which virkon s kills pathogen is 10 times faster than similar agents.
Virkon S used for aerial disinfection;the virkon s is prepared at a dilution rate of 1:200/10sqm floor space, the solution is placed in knap sac and spray nozzle is set to fine droplet and solution is applied to desired areas. The major advantage is that the solution can be used in presence of animals in cages ,pens and other shelter type. The virkon s can also be applied to birds in deep litter ; this is achieved by sprinkling some quantity of the powder an the litter and its turned to make it fresh and clean, this will also eliminate odor from the poultry house.
THINK VIRKON S!!! BIO SECURE YOUR FARMS!!!

BIRD FLU.
Avian influenza is a deadly viral infection that have been ravaging poultry farms around the world. The rate of spread of the virus is very alarming, and although wild birds have been implicated in the spread of the virus, contamination and contact are routes for persistence of the virus in and around farms.
The role of bio security in the prevention and curbing of spread of infection on farms cannot be over emphasized,the bio security protocol must be simple,easily adaptable and measurable.The simplicity of the protocol will ensure strict compliance, the bio security measures include the following;
1) Do not allow visitors to your farm.
2) vehicles coming into the farm area must pass through a vat filled with disinfectants or the vehicle is hosed down with disinfectants .
3) The farm area must be cordoned off and must have foot dips at entrance.
4)The farm hands must enter the farm site from an entrance then go to cloak room to change into clean disinfected farm wear.
5)The tools and personal wear must be washed daily and disinfected.
6) The drinkers must be cleaned and disinfected.
7) floors drains and working surfaces are to be cleaned and disinfected.
8)isolate new birds to farms ,in a separate section of farm.
9) The birds can also be sprayed in the cages using disinfectants.
10)The water source must be clean and cool, ensure the purity of water source by treating with chemicals.
11)Litter management is very important, scrap and pack litter and dispose properly.
12) Proper disposal of dead birds, and other waste matter from the farm.
13) The farm environs must be clean and devoid of grasses,or stagnant pools.
14)The disinfectants used in foot dips must be changed at regular intervals.
Bird flu is indeed deadly and zoonotic depending on the strain of virus involved. The first major sign is high mortality of sudden onset, then bluish-purplish combs, shanks and crop region, swollen lids and diarrhea.
When you observe any of such signs,do not start treating or vaccinating; just restrict access to your farm and notify your vet.

DISINFECTANTS USED IN BIRD FLU OUTBREAK.
Disinfectants that are used for bio security in poultry are enormous but only 2 disinfectants have been proven to kill the bird flu virus. These disinfectants are virkon and virocid, they have been used in various outbreak in numerous countries with 100% efficacy.
Virocid is the world’s most powerful disinfectant, as it achieves 99.9% microbial eradication
It is all about avoiding pathogens building up to dangerously high levels. At these high levels, the pathogens can cause serious health problems for the animals and substantial economic losses to the farmer.
It is a never-ending task that requires a rigorous approach, Bacteria, viruses and fungi will find a stronghold in these areas and finally spread disease to people, poultry, transport, vermin, insects etc. that are passing by these infectious hot spots.
Virocid is an extremely concentrated disinfectant with a synergistic composition of four active ingredients.
It has proven records in preventing and fighting disease outbreaks for many years: IB, IBD, avian influenza, Enterococcus, Salmonella, Aspergillus. It is amazingly effective at very low dilutions - 0.25 to 0.50 per cent - against all microorganisms: bacteria, viruses, fungi and spores.
Virocid is hospital-graded according to the EPA registration in the US.
Moreover, Virocid has a long residual action and can be applied in a versatile way (spraying, (hot) fogging, foaming) on surfaces, boot, dips, vehicles and equipment.
virocid used in various ways such as horticulture, hospital, food processing unit, animal healthcare and personal hygiene

HOW TO USE BLEACH AS A DISINFECTANT.
The cleaning exercise continues; another household product that I find so useful and very effective in killing germs is BLEACH.
The common household bleach does more than you know, look@ how I use it. Sodium hypochlorite(bleach), normally used to whiten clothes, it’s a powerful disinfectant. I use a mixture of bleach and water to clean floors, kitchen units, table tops and kitchen floors.
Undiluted bleach is used to clean toilet bowls and clean bathroom walls. A mixture of the bleach and water to wipe bathroom floors, doors sink ,brush holder and wash shower curtain .
