Colorado hospital sued over exposure to disease from ex-surgical technician.
A Colorado hospital has been sued by three former surgery patients who say they were among nearly 3,000 people possibly exposed to a blood-borne disease carried by a drug-addicted former medical technician, court records showed on Tuesday. The Swedish Medical Center in suburban Denver is accused of negligence in its hiring and supervision of a surgical technologist who was caught trying to switch a syringe containing the powerful opiate fentanyl citrate with another substance during a patient’s surgery in January.
The technician, Rocky Allen, 28, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Denver last month on one count of tampering with a consumer product and one count of obtaining a controlled substance by deceit, both felonies. The civil complaint, filed in U.S. District Court in Denver, said federal authorities in the criminal case testified at a criminal hearing last month that Allen is a carrier of an unspecified “blood-borne pathogen.” The incident prompted the hospital to notify some 2,900 patients who underwent surgery at the facility from August 2015 to January 2016 during Allen’s employment to be screened for HIV, and hepatitis B and C.
The three patients suing underwent surgery during that time frame and are seeking monetary damages for emotional distress.

1) contact with infected birds.
2)contact with surfaces, floors, clothing and tools contaminated with infected poultry droppings.
3)Living in close proximity with poultry houses and sharing gadgets, implements and tools.
4)Processing infected poultry.

CURBING THE SPREAD OF HPAI .
The avian influenza virus ravaging poultry in some countries now and death of humans in other countries, has been linked to migratory birds that harbor the virus. The interaction of the migratory birds/ waterfowl/game birds with the domestic birds results in the fulminating HPAI infection.
The virus is spread from bird to bird and flock to flock by direct/indirect contact with droppings & secretions and contaminated feed/water. The virus can be stopped by practicing basic bio security protocol, isolation and hand hygiene.
The virus can be stopped in the following ways; 1) Curb smuggling of exotic birds into the country.
2) Strict custom regulations concerning import of poultry products/ birds from countries battling with the virus.
3)Enhanced bio-security in farms, live bird markets, and slaughter houses.
4)Avoid contact with infected carcasses and proper disposal of affected birds.
5)Active surveillance of farms/live bird markets/slaughter houses.
6) Early diagnosis and commencement of treatment using Tamiflu,in human subjects.
7)Mass sensitization of citizens on the virus, its mode of spread, signs of infection, and prevention strategies.
