PONMO: There is more to the consumption of Ponmo

Sometime ago there was an influx of bad ponmo into the country. These bad ponmo are actually hides and skin meant for the leather industry that some unscrupulous merchants smuggle and sell for human consumption. These ponmo are identified by the smell of the chemicals added to preserve the leather and unusual thickness. There was a raid on certain facilities with confiscation of the products and arrest of some merchants. Read more here.

Do you know that some bad elements have devised other modes of operation?

Do you know that hides and skin meant for leather are still processed and sold to consumers?

Do you know that some merchants go to the north to buy hides and skin for leather and process?

Do you know that the popular Ponmo Ijebu is not wholesome?

Do you know that merchants go to the north procure hides and skin meant for leather industry and process for consumption?

Do you know that in the north the leather merchants say" TAKALAMINKANO, NAMAN LAGOS?

Meaning shoe in Kano is meat in Lagos.

Let me show you the ponmo ijebu before and after processing.

Ponmo Ijebu.

Evaluation of the use of garri suspension to manage diarrhoea.

Garri can be used to treat diarrhoea. When a person has diarrhoea, just give the person soaked garri and the diarrhoea will stop because the garri absorbs the toxins that go into the intestine thus promoting gut health. Diarrhoea can readily lead to dehydration if not properly handled.

Dehydration if not corrected can lead to death depending on the rate and length of the period. Diarrhoea can be managed locally using the sugar-salt solution, the oral rehydration therapy( ORT).
The use of garri water suspension has been used to stop diarrhoea in homes this is common in the rural environment.
Did you know that soaking garri in water for few minutes and decanting the water is an instant source of energy and vitamins? Yes garri water is also beneficial. A recent study has shown the efficacy of using the garri suspension to manage diarrhoea.

The aim of the study was to identify a suitable substrate for oral re-hydration solution at home. The study used staple from cassava which is garri. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of cassava-salt suspension (CSS) prepared from a dietary staple, cassava, with added sodium chloride.

The results were compared with those of standard World Health Organization (WHO) recommended ORS. One hundred thirty-two dehydrated children aged between 6 and 24 months with acute diarrhoea of less than 3 days duration were chosen for the study and randomly re-hydrated with CSS or WHO-ORS. The intake of ORS (CSS or WHO-ORS), water, and food was comparable in both groups. The mean stool output on day 1, total stool output, and duration of diarrhoea were 45.3 +/- 37.3 g/kg, 60.8 +/- 58.9 g/kg, and 18.9 +/- 22.4 h for the group on CSS.

These are significantly different from the corresponding values of 69.7 +/- 64.9 g/kg, 88.2 +/- 100.4 g/kg, and 28.2 +/- 27.0 h obtained for controls. Failure of therapy occurred in four children on CSS (6%) and three children on WHO-ORS (4.5%).

It is concluded that CSS is both efficacious and safe for use as an ORS, particularly in the home management of acute diarrhoea in children. (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/7980837/)

Agribusiness, the most successful way to start in India in 2021?.

In India, agriculture employs more than 60% of the workforce and is successful despite the AIDS epidemic. India’s agriculture business has great market potential as its population grows steadily.

This explains why more and more people are interested in agriculture these days … it benefits the entire population, so it offers a cheap return on investment.

In addition, there are no additional costs associated with starting this business in combination with other complementary businesses, making it a viable long-term investment.

For example, you can do organic farming and at the same time produce organic fertilizer on the same land.

No additional cash is required except for the investment you need most. #Nigeria #India #America #UK #startupfunding

Agribusiness : How to calculate dressing percentage in slaughtered cattle.

Cattle business is no doubt profitable  but you can actually calculate the profit if you track the numbers, yes! do the math.

Cattle business can be broadly divided into:1) sale of live animals. 2) buy the animal, fatten and sell. 3) buy, slaughter and sell.

How do you calculate the meat to expect from the carcass ? many people believe that the live weight of the animal is what to expect when animal is slaughtered. A lot of people  are often surprised at quantity of meat after processing because dressing percentage is different from live weight.

The concept of dressing percentage is key to profit calculation in cattle business, this is the math critical to business evaluation.

What is dressing percentage and how do you do the math?  The dressing percentage is the portion of the live weight that results in hot carcass weight.

What is the hot carcass weight? this is the weight of the unchilled carcass after the head, internal organs and hides have been removed. The hot carcass weight for cattle is approximately about  60-64% of the live animal weight. The hot carcass weight can vary from one animal to another depending on some factors.

The dressing percentage =  hot carcass weight / live weight X 100.

If an animal weighs 300 kg, working with 62.5% as hot carcass weight means the dressing percentage will be: 187.5 /300 X 100=  62.5.

The dressing percentage used in the meat industry  does not equate to amount of beef that will be available for sale because the carcass will be divided into various meat cuts.

The whole animal is cut into halves and separated into front and hind quarters. These quarters are separated into primal cuts ,this is referred to as breaking down the  carcass. The  amount of beef available can be affected by amount of fat in carcass which will be trimmed off or the size /weight of bone because bone can weigh more.

The more bone is left in the  beef cut the higher the yield percentage but when retail cuts are boneless then the percentage yield will be lower.

This calculation is a template to determine profit whether you are supplying beef using different cuts or you are selling retail.

Food safety: Global call to reduce antimicrobial use in healthy animals.

World leaders have called for an urgent reduction in the amount of antimicrobial drugs, including antibiotics, used in food systems.

The Global Leaders Group on Antimicrobial Resistance said countries must stop the use of medically important antimicrobial drugs to promote growth in healthy animals.

Antimicrobial drugs are also given to animals for veterinary purposes to treat and prevent disease.

Mitigation measures
A top priority is to reduce the use of drugs that are of the greatest importance to treat diseases in humans, animals and plants.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in bacteria can make foodborne infections such as Campylobacter and Salmonella harder to treat. Experts said climate change may also be contributing to an increase in AMR.

Consumers can also play a key role by choosing food from producers that use antimicrobial drugs responsibly, according to experts Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, World Health Organization director-general, said the consequences of antimicrobial resistance could dwarf those of COVID-19.

“We need urgent action to win the race against AMR. The longer the world delays, the greater the costs will be, in terms of costs to health systems, costs to food systems, costs to economies, and costs in lives and livelihoods,” he said.

“We need to invest in human health, animal health, plant, food and environmental eco-systems to properly respond to the growing threat of AMR. Many countries have national action plans on AMR but too few are funded for implementation.

Agribusiness: food safety in Africa’s informal markets must be driven by consumers.

Listeria in processed meat products from South Africa, E. Coli in romaine lettuce in the US, Salmonella in eggs across Europe and Campylobacter in chicken liver pâté in Australia.

These are among the many pathogens and foods at the centre of recent food safety crises worldwide, estimated to impact as many people as infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria and TB.

But while deaths and illnesses from unsafe food hit countries worldwide, the incidences of these illnesses and lost lives are disproportionately high in Africa.

Across the continent, tainted food kills about 140 000 people every year, and leaves 91 million more suffering from diarrhoea, tapeworm, hepatitis and even dysentery and typhoid.

This is on course to become even worse as income growth and urbanization in Africa are enabling better, more diverse diets.

Ironically, these healthier foods – such as dairy, eggs, meat, fruits and vegetables – are more likely to be contaminated.

AGRIBUSINESS: Pesticides blamed for rise in colon cancer deaths.

AGRIBUSINESS: Pesticides blamed for rise in colon cancer deaths. The use of pesticides has been linked to a sharp rise in colon cancer deaths in a developing country for the first time. Colon cancer is the third most common type of cancer worldwide, accounting for about 10 per cent of all cases. It is more common in developed nations, but a few countries in Latin America, including Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay are now approaching the levels of incidence seen in the developed world. Now a team of researchers from Brazil, Germany, and the United Kingdom have mapped the use of pesticides across Brazil between 2000 and 2012. They then compared this to the number of deaths from colon cancer during the same period. They observed an overall increase of colon cancer, which was correlated with the amount of pesticides sold and used in the country. Analyzing data published by the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources, the researchers found that in 2000, just over 162 million tons of pesticides were sold in Brazil. By 2012, sales had jumped to roughly 476 million tons. Over the same period, data gathered by the Brazilian ministry of health indicates that the number of deaths caused by colon cancer had gone up from 946,686 to more than a million, despite progress in cancer detection and treatment. The researchers behind the study said that pesticides applied to Brazilian crops are contaminating food and water consumed by both people livestock.

Roundup Linked to Global Boom in Celiac Disease and Gluten Intolerance.

Roundup Linked to Global Boom in Celiac Disease and Gluten Intolerance. Celiac disease, gluten intolerance and irritable bowel syndrome are on the rise worldwide, and that rise has taken place in parallel with the increased use of glyphosate (Roundup) herbicide, shows a new US peer-reviewed paper from Dr. Anthony Samsel and Dr. Stephanie Seneff. The review has been published in the Journal of Interdisciplinary Toxicology. Roundup is linked in Samsel and Seneff’s new review paper to a major increase in celiac disease. A recent estimate suggests that one in twenty people in North America and Western Europe now suffer from this gluten intolerant disease. “All of the known biological effects of glyphosate – cytochrome P450 inhibition, disruption of synthesis of aromatic amino acids, chelation of transition metals, and antibacterial action – contribute to the pathology of celiac disease,” Samsel and Seneff’s paper states. Monsanto’s Glyphosate (Roundup) has become the number one selling herbicide worldwide, due to the increase in the planting of Roundup Ready GM Crops.Celiac disease is a digestive disease that damages the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients from food. People who have celiac disease cannot tolerate gluten, a protein in wheat, rye, and barley. Gluten is found mainly in foods but may also be found in everyday products such as medicines, vitamins, and lip balms. When people with celiac disease eat foods or use products containing gluten, their immune system responds by damaging or destroying villi—the tiny, fingerlike protrusions lining the small intestine. Villi normally allow nutrients from food to be absorbed through the walls of the small intestine into the bloodstream. Without healthy villi, a person becomes malnourished, no matter how much food one eats. It increase the toxin burden leaking into the blood stream) and inclusion of probiotics (superior quality such as ‘entralive maximal’ from Entrapro) which also contain essential prebiotics plus a high quality enzyme formula along with eating whole foods in a manner easy to digest – for several YEARS (such as soups and cooked foods) to enable the gut lining to heal. Many gluten free religites don’t get better because the underlying leaky gut is not repaired.

AGRIBUSINESS : One way to reduce food waste is to use it to make soil healthier.

AGRIBUSINESS : One way to reduce food waste is to use it to make soil healthier. Imagine that one-third of cars manufactured by Ford or GM were never even driven once, but instead were left to rust and ended up in landfills. This exact situation is true today in agriculture, where up to 40 percent of food produced every year in the United States is never eaten. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the United States generates over 39 million tons of food waste yearly. Strawberries rot on the vine for lack of labor to pick them. Food spoils during transport, at the grocery store or in our homes. More is lost during processing, due to inefficiencies and lack of markets for byproducts. AGRIBUSINESS : One way to reduce food waste is to use it to make soil healthier. Food waste contains valuable nutrients that can make soil healthier and more productive. A research group at Colorado State University is working with Leprino Foods, a global supplier of dairy products, to explore the potential for transforming lactose – the natural sugar in milk – into a resource that can enhance agricultural sustainability. Manufacturing dairy products generates large amounts of leftover natural materials, including lactose. Currently the dominant market for lactose is for baby formula, but companies like Leprino produce more lactose than the formula market demands. Rather than sending the rest to landfills, they partnered with our team at Colorado State University to explore potential agricultural uses for it.

This Snack Company Grew Quickly Out of a Dorm Room After It Sold Its Products to Tech Companies

.This Snack Company Grew Quickly Out of a Dorm Room After It Sold Its Products to Tech Companies. Rip Pruisken, co-founder of snack maker Rip Van Wafels, runs his company like a technology maker: constantly trying to iterate and improve on the original product. "Technology is developing quickly, but food is also a form of technology," he says. “If something was invented 70 years ago, that's great, that's awesome, but you have to improve upon it." It's not like his company's products, a wafer-like cookie based on Dutch treats called stroopwafels, need to be improved. Rip Van Wafels is already sold in 12,000 stores, including Fairway and Starbucks, as well as available in the kitchens of big tech firms, including Square. But Pruisken won't rest on Rip Van's six successful years of business. "There's so many brands and there's so much innovation,” he says. "The idea is to basically launch every two years a healthier product but still maintain the taste and design."

Trump Quietly OK’s Bioengineered Farming on Wildlife Refuges.

Trump Quietly OK’s Bioengineered Farming on Wildlife Refuges. When you think about America’s wildlife refuges, a lush rolling mountain range or untrammeled wetland preserve might come to mind—not a field clouded with industrial weedkillers. There’s a good reason for that: A few years ago, the Obama administration barred two controversial forms of biotechnology on designated wildlife preserves, neonicotinoid pesticides and genetically modified crops, to help the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) better uphold its public mandate of conservation and wildlife protection. But the Trump administration is seeking to make the country’s wilderness safe for agrichemicals again. In a terse memorandum, seemingly unprompted, the FWS quietly rescinded a hard-won Obama-era legal agreement, which imposed a blanket ban on the pesticides and genetically modified crops on the agricultural lands currently hosted in national wildlife refuges. Trump Quietly OK’s Bioengineered Farming on Wildlife Refuges. The Trump administration’s new plans for agrichemicals allows the use of pesticides and GMOs on farmlands located in the habitats of individual wildlife refuges across the United States. This could open the door to wide application of two high-risk biotechnologies. One is genetically modified crops, which have expanded the monopoly power of seed giants like Monsanto across the agricultural supply chain and have often come with increased use of the company’s controversial Roundup glyphosate herbicides. Additionally, the agreement allows refuge-based farms to use neonicotinoids, a class of pesticides associated with the disruption of ecosystems and damage to critical bee populations. Activists say that the chemicals the Trump administration is quietly promoting on conservation areas are known for posing environmental and public-health risks and would upend the fundamental mission of wildlife refuges.

MSME to get N10m collateral-free loans.

MSME to get N10m collateral-free loans.Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, says the Federal Government is working towards providing Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises(MSME) a credit facility of N2 million to N10 million without collateral. Osibanjo made the disclosure on Wednesday at a dinner/ maiden edition of the MSMEs Award 2018 held at the State House Banquet Hall, Abuja. The awards packaged by the Office of the Vice-President and supported by the Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment, got over 300 nominations across the nation. Osinbajo had in 2017 launched the MSME Clinic as part of efforts to encourage the contributions of MSMEs to Nigeria’s economic growth. The acting president said he was delighted to reward and recognise outstanding MSME as they represent remarkable examples of Nigerian entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation. According to him, efforts are underway to double government’s commitment to ensuring that MSME find an enabling environment to thrive. He said that in addition to the one-stop-shop launched in some states to carry the MSME clinics intervention, the Federal Government would soon launch its shared facilities for MSMEs initiative. Osinbajo said the initiative would be in partnership with the Bank of Industry (BOI), Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM) and the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC). “This initiatives will provide MSME access to fully equipped cluster style facilities for which they can pay an affordable fee to operate. “These facilities would have been pre-certified by relevant agencies like NAFDAC, Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and NEPC thereby removing the layers of bureaucracy that in the past held back many aspiring entrepreneurs.
