Bakers’ association urges revitalisation of cassava-bread initiative.

Bakers’ association urges revitalization of cassava-bread initiative.

The Association of Masters Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria, Edo chapter, has called for the revival of cassava-bread initiative to reduce dependency on wheat flour. Agbonze said that the Federal Government needed to put machinery in place to revive the policy on cassava -bread production to reduce the rising cost of bread in the country

The garri-bread initiative:  The emergence of the garri-bread, though the advocacy to revitalize the cassava-bread initiative is laudable but there is a method to shorten the production process: instead of processing the cassava to make bread , the use of well processed garri to make bread and other pastries.

The introduction of garri bread is a better alternative. Learn how to make money turning garri to delicious bread.

Why cassava could be a way to keep food costs down.

Why cassava could be a way to keep food costs down.

There are two main root vegetables in West Africa - cassava and yam. Cassava is available all year round, it is cheap and is known, or to put it correctly, was known as food for the poor.

Why cassava could be a way to keep food costs down.

The other popular one is yam, which Nigerian author Chinua Achebe famously described as "the king of crops". The yam harvest is awaited eagerly. Indeed, special rites are performed before the new yam can be eaten, and we put on our finest clothes to celebrate the vegetable. Cassava is, at best, everyday food and used to be the regular fare of the poor and servants.

Why cassava could be a way to keep food costs down : the global cassava development strategy.

Garri from cassava can replace wheat and can be used for bread.

I note that President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda is urging his people to turn to a diet of cassava as an antidote to the rocketing price of wheat during the current worldwide cost of living crisis. "If there is no bread, eat muwogo [cassava]," he said.

Food security: how the Ukraine and Russian war affects you.

Food security means having, at all times, both physical and economic access to sufficient food to meet dietary needs for a productive and healthy life. A family is food secure when its members do not live in hunger or fear of hunger. According to reports there are 4.5 million food insecure people in Nigeria with the highest number in Lagos. Food insecurity is rooted in poverty with long-term impacts on the ability of families, communities and countries to develop and prosper.

The scenario above was the status quo before the Ukraine-Russian war,now with all the sanctions, bans and restrictions on Russia things are going to be tough. According to Mr Aliko Dangote there is a forecast of food scarcity in the next four months.

All Countries with very close economic links with Ukraine and Russia are at particular risk of scarcity and supply disruptions and are most affected by the increasing inflows of refugees.

According to reports that Russia is among Nigeria’s top 10 import trade partners between the third quarter of 2020 and the corresponding period in 2021, with a total import trade value of N993.38bn. Russia supplies the majority of wheat imported to Nigeria, meaning wheat and wheat products will skyrocket and become more inaccessible to majority.

How the Ukraine-Russian war affects you?

Wheat is one of the products Nigeria import from Russia.Wheat is typically milled into flour which is then used to make a wide range of foods including bread, noodles, pasta, biscuits, cakes, pastries, cereal ,bars, sweet and savory snack foods, confectionery and in animal feed.

This means not only will food prices go up,animal feed costs will rise. This war can actually be the time to look inwards and promote alternatives to wheat such as CASSAVA.

CASSAVA OUR SUPER FOOD TO THE RESCUE. This is the time to scale up production of cassava as well as promote the processing to GARRI to produce food and confectionery.

Did you know you could make pasta, noodles, bread and feed from cassava?
Did you know you could turn garri to bread
Did you know that promoting the processing of cassava to garri you will empower families especially women.
Did you know that by promoting the garri business/initiatives more children can be fed healthy meals? The time to shift is here now, Cassava------garri-= empowerment =foodsecurity==forex generation by exporting the Nigerian garri.

Echbee Foods adding Value to Cassava for Health and Wealth.

Nigeria is the largest producer of cassava of which 70% of it is processed to garri. The need to provide food for the estimated population of 10 billion by 2030 is very important taking into consideration the impact of climate change on agriculture.

According to research there is an urgency to promote innovative  use of crops to produce new healthy products as well as look into the need to look at other food alternatives.

Each country is blessed with a staple crop or produce which if properly harnessed will ensure food security, wealth creation as well as employment opportunities. This is the case of using what you have to get what you want.

In Nigeria, we are so blessed with cassava. Lets look at the possibilities of turning garri a product of cassava to innovative products. Garri has also found its place in the international market with Amazon, Tropical sun and other sites selling branded packs online. The Africans in diaspora also  order some African foods such as crayfish, melon, pepper, yam flour ,garri e.t.c.

The African food in high demand is garri, this gives credence to the study by Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC)  : there is a market for high quality garri for exports and supermarkets. The export market has the potential to generate US$343,524 while the local domestic demand can add US$62,312 to the economy.   This is the export potential of garri , increasing foreign income if properly harnessed.

Echbee Foods uses this garri to make healthy, nutritious foods that are healthy and affordable. Garri can be used to make bread replacing wheat thus saving forex spent on wheat importation.

Agribusiness: Building a garri empire with innovative ideas.

Echbee Foods, turning ordinary garri to extraordinary products. We are building a garri empire one recipe at a time providing nutritious food for children, empowering women and ensuring food security.

Why garri? why not?  There is no home in Africa where garri is not on the menu at least twice a day, crunch the numbers and see the possibilities. If a larger % of the population eat garri, the cassava is here in the country, processing is done here then there is a market, a perpetual market.

Introduction of garri to people is not necessary the catch here is to show how ordinary garri can be nutritious and affordable. Garri is easily accessible, affordable and a larger portion of the population are accustomed to the food.

Echbee foods thus decided to fortify what was already common in most homes to achieve our purpose of balanced meal with garri. Garri which is the most common by -product is food for over 800 million people in the world, thus fortifying the garri to produce a highly nutritious cereal can generate over 120 billion naira as revenue.

Welcome to the garri empire, a world of possibilities. We are changing the way people eat garri, one recipe at a time.

The signature product of Echbee foods is our cassava flakes, which can be a snack or cereal.

This is how most people drink #garri.

Cassava exports, prices jump on surging china demands.

Vietnam exported $256 million worth of cassava and cassava products in the first two months of the year, a 77.9 percent year-on-year increase, with China being the biggest market.

China accounted for over 95 percent of exports in January, with prices rising by 69 percent year-on-year to $242.2 per ton.

According to the Vietnam Cassava Association, a number of local processing factories face a short supply though the harvest season has begun.

Local prices are expected to reach record levels by the end of the harvest since most of it would be exported to China at high prices, which have reached $270 FOB at Quy Nhon Port.

China has huge demand for cassava as a replacement for corn, whose global prices are surging, to feed pigs.

Yucca Root Can Improve Digestion and Relieve Arthritis Pain.

Yucca( cassava) Root Can Improve Digestion and Relieve Arthritis Pain. Yucca (CASSAVA )root possesses chemistries that add powerful medicinal activities to the veterinary herbalist’s goodie bag. Among these chemistries are sarsasapogenin, smilagenin, and various other compounds that are loosely known by the herbal/scientist community as "phytosterols." Herbalists theorize that phytosterols serve the body by stimulating and assisting the body in the use and production of natural corticosteroids and corticosteroid- related hormones. Unlike corticosteroid drugs such as prednisone, yucca is thought to work in concert with natural autoimmune functions of the body – actually supporting immune system functions as opposed to shutting them down. It can be reasonably hypothesized that the natural, corticosteroid-like actions of yucca may play a role in the body’s natural production of growth hormones, which in turn may contribute significantly to the accelerated growth and production we see in animals that receive it in their food. And although this theory has not been established as "fact" by the scientific community, we know that yucca is very safe in the diet when fed in moderation and in a sensible manner. What all of this means is that yucca can be a very useful natural remedy in the treatment of arthritis.

RESEARCH: CASSAVA AND FERTILITY.

RESEARCH: CASSAVA AND FERTILITY.The Cassava plant contains a chemical that causes hyper-ovulation. Cassava works by the same method as prescription fertility drugs, without the side effects. Natural hormones called GnRH released by Cassava fool the brain into thinking there is insufficient estrogen, causing the brain to naturally release more of a hormone called gonadotropin, and dramatically increases the ovulation rate. Cassava is known world wide for its effects on fertility. It helps with increasing the chance of twins, but also with overall fertility. Many women use this supplement to increase fertility even when they’re not trying for twins.

AGRIBUSINESS: Cassava high in iron and zinc could improve diets and health in west Africa.

AGRIBUSINESS: Cassava high in iron and zinc could improve diets and health in west Africa. A new study shows that field-grown cassava plants over expressing a combination of plant genes can accumulate significantly higher concentrations of iron and zinc.

The "hidden hunger" caused by micro nutrient deficiency is a global threat to human health, with particularly severe impacts in Africa.

In Nigeria, 75 percent of preschool children and 67 percent of pregnant women are anemic, and 20 percent of children below five years suffer from zinc deficiency. Iron deficiency anemia affects the immune system, stunts growth and impairs cognitive development in children, while deficiency in zinc causes increased risk of death from diarrhea, stunting and reduced cognitive development.

Developing new varieties of a staple food crop with elevated levels of these two minerals could significantly improve diets and health. The elevated mineral levels of the 'bio fortified' cassava storage roots are retained after processing into common foodstuffs and are nutritionally available at levels that could have a significant impact on the health of cassava-consuming populations in West Africa.

CASSAVA MORE PROFITABLE THAN CORN.

CASSAVA MORE PROFITABLE THAN CORN. Cyril Cattiling, who owns a six-hectare cassava farm, smiles when discussing how he produces cassava. One secret he agreed to share is how he gives his crop TLC (tender loving care). He believes that with TLC, he and his fellow farmers in Alfonso Lista, Ifugao can have a bountiful cassava harvest. A proud father and husband, Cattiling is a hands-on cassava grower. He is also the president of the Ifugao Tapioca Growers Association (ITGA) and farm manager of the Yao Jia Xi Corporation, which supplies cassava granules to the San Miguel Corporation (SMC). The ITGA started in 2015 to organize all cassava growers in the municipality. It is composed of 75 members. Meanwhile Yao Jia Xi, a farming corporation, gives planting materials to and shares technology with farmers who are members of ITGA. The ITGA sells dried and granulated cassava to the Yao Jia Xi Corporation which then sells the same to SMC, a consistent buyer. Using a solar dryer and granulator for their cassava, the ITGA produces 250 to 300 bags of granulated cassava, which SMC buys for ₱9.70 per kilo Farming has always been Cattiling’s main source of income. He started cassava production in 2012, shifting to it from corn farming. Just like him, his fellow Ifugao farmers were once corn growers. But because of the high production cost of corn, some of them diversified to cassava production. Cassava has better economic benefits. “Cassava [production] offers a better income compared to corn,” said Cattiling, noting that this is true even though cassava is harvested just once a year. One hectare of corn earns him ₱25,000 while cassava gives him ₱130,000 per hectare from a capital of ₱30,000. With good land preparation and available markets, cassava can be profitable Related post: opportunities in garri value chain. Cassava value chain.
