VITAMIN E AND HORSE METABOLISM.

Vitamin E it benefits all horses, but will green grass and sunshine be enough? Would a high level performance horse benefit from additional vitamin E? What does vitamin E do in the horse? Vitamin E is a term used to describe a group of compounds known as tocopherols and tocotrienols. In equine nutrition most attention is paid to alpha-tocopherol. Alpha-tocopherol plays an important role in something called the glutathione pathway, which protects cells from oxidative damage, as well as reacting with free radicals produced by processes such as the lipid peroxidation chain reaction. Free radicals cause damage in cells because they have an odd number of electrons, which gives them an unstable electrical charge. In an attempt to become stable they “steal” electrons from other molecules. This causes a new molecule to be unstable, and it might not be able to perform its function within the body. A chain of oxidative destruction can result within the cell, which can negatively impact cell function and potentially cause cell death. Free radical formation is a natural consequence of various molecular processes within the cell, and we often hear it referred to as “oxidative stress.” It’s easy to label free radicals as “bad,” but they are in fact a perfectly natural consequence of the body using fats and carbohydrates for energy.Read more here;http://www.thehorse.com/articles/36737/when-do-horses-need-vitamin-e?utm_source=Newsletter&utm_medium=nutrition&utm_campaign=11-16-2015

COLIC SURGERY.

Colic surgeries are common procedures in equine veterinary medicine, but do you know what to expect after your horse recovers from anesthesia? Equally as important as knowing whether you should send a horse to surgery is understanding what to prepare for once he’s back in his own stall.Learn all you need to know here;http://www.thehorse.com/articles/36718/what-to-expect-after-colic-surgery?utm_source=Newsletter&utm_medium=nutrition&utm_campaign=11-16-2015

COLIC AT A GLANCE.

Colic refers to disturbances in the gastrointestinal track,it could be a mild discomfort to extreme abdominal pain.A mild case can resolve on its own, severe cases require surgery and extreme cases results in death. The common cases are usually associated with 1) changes in exercise routine. 2) changes in stabling routine 3) changes in feed, feeding portions and feeding times. 4)worm load and 5) teeth problems. The common symptoms are 1)restlessness .(frequent getting up and down) 2)flank watching(turning to look at abdomen frequently). 3)Frequent unsuccessful attempts to urinate. 4)fever. 5)high pulse rate. 6)pawing.(scrapping the ground). Colic cannot be prevented in all cases but certain procedures can be implemented to prevent occurrence; 1)Feeding protocol, give a little portion of feed at meal times,do not overfeed and dont allow access to excess water after exercise. When feed is to be changed, introduce new feed gradually and give cool fresh water. 2) Health protocol regular vet checks.2)follow a routine worming program. 3)clean paddock regularly to remove feces, this will reduce contamination of pasture with fecal eggs. 3)keep teeth rasped. Horses are use to routine so do not change routine suddenly. The changes to exercise routine should be gradual and also reduce stress on the horses.

WASTE MANAGEMENT AND POWER GENERATION.

Waste management is a global issue with developing countries having the biggest task. The management technique varies as different methods are used to prevent the environmental pollution and health hazard attached to this menace. The generation of electricity from the waste is a possible route, but the methodology and cost implication has always been an issue; see how a minimal investment in a biogas plant can generate power ,save the environment and generate revenue.See this

THE GEKO BRA!!! # ANIMAL INSPIRED FASHION.

A gecko's toe consists of a microscopic hierarchical structure of stalk-like setae - 100 microns in length, 2 microns in radius. From individual setae, a bundle of hundreds of terminal tips called spatulae - approximately 200 nanometers in diameter at their widest - branch out and contact the climbing surface. These hairs create an electrostatic force known as Van der Waals. It causes neighbouring molecules to be attracted to each other. Although very weak, the effect is multiplied by thousands of tiny hairs that cover a gecko's toes, allowing them to stick firmly to surfaces. Read how the geko provided the raw material for this adhesive bra!.http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-3315822/Women-rejoice-Finally-strapless-bra-stays-inspired-GECKO-FEET.html

CLAY AND VETERINARY PRACTICE.

A lot of protocols come in handy when treating animals, from the conventional to the very unconventional and all works well. The holistic, alternative, herbal practice are just some of the medical interventions used.Acupuncture is also another area of practice, where needles are stuck into different body parts to relieve certain pains associated with certain diseases. This works on the theory that different sectors of the body have receptors that actually governs certain body function/metabolism ,thus these areas are prodded with needles. Bonding with glue is another common protocol, use of water resistant bonds to fix tortoise shell is also fairly common. Vets are really dynamic bringing so many properties to play in practice[ see how vets used CLAY to save an elephant's foot;http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3129674/Baby-elephant-died-caught-poacher-s-snare-Kenya-saved-vets-pack-severely-injured-foot-CLAY.html

VITAMINS FOR ANIMAL HEALTH

Vitamins are handy and vital for your animal health. When animals are exposed to stressors such as fatigue, diseases, vaccination, environmental changes, dehydration e.t.c. Give this vitamin supplement to restore health. Vitamins very beneficial to regulate metabolic reactions, keep it in your box.

TETANUS IN HORSES!!!

Caused by clostridium tetani, prevalent in soil and feces.Wound contamination is common route of infection. The classical signs are stiffened gait and prolapse of 3rd eyelid .Prevention is by vaccinating horses and treatment will include antitoxin and wound treatment and management.

BOTULISM IN HORSES!!!

Clostridium botulinum lives in moist soil and areas with high humidity and prevalent in decaying matter. The toxins that are produced are very potent resulting in death within 3-5 days of onset of signs. Clostridium botulinum is related to tetanus but more potent than tetanus. The source of infection is usually contaminated pasture that has dead/decaying bodies of animals. The spores are ingested with pasture, the spores can also be consumed from contaminated hay, there is also the possibility of wound contamination by spores. Botulism affects old and young horses, although young horses are very susceptible with a resultant malady disease referred to as shaker foal syndrome. The shaker foal syndrome occurs at 3-8 weeks of age and symptoms include weakness, inability to rise, profound muscle tremor. The uncontrollable shaking often cause the foal to tumble and remain recumbent, death occurs as a result of respiratory paralysis. The classical signs of botulism include;1) muscular tremors and stilted gait. 2)difficult eating and swallowing. 3)progressive muscle weakness 4)decreased tail and tongue tone 4)respiratory paralysis followed by death. The botulinum toxin reproduces repeatedly and rapidly in the horse's gut. Treatment; isolation of affected horse . 2)injection of antitoxin to all horses in the stables.

AGRIBUSINESS : EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND FOOD SECURITY.

Emotional intelligence refers to a person's ability to recognize his or her own and other people's emotions, understand the effect of these emotions, and to use that information to provide better working conditions to promote success in any enterprise.

Agriculture is broad and plagued by numerous problems that are hindering production and promoting food insecurity. The administrator should go pass normal work rules, they should inject emotional intelligence to their routine .

The best workers are the highly motivated, you can only get the best out of workers if your rules, laws have a human face. The agri business that will be productive must ensure good working conditions for staff to prevent sabotage of venture.

Food security. The farm hands that are poorly paid, neglected or relegated and unappreciated carry out their duties shabbily. The routine vaccinations, medications and other biosecurity protocols are neglected resulting in losses of animals.

When workers are not properly compensated ,this will result in a lot of theft/compromise on their part and financial losses on the part of investors.

Emotional intelligence. We have all heard the devastating news of the cyanide poisoning that has claimed the lives of 71 elephants at Hwange national park in recent weeks,” “We need to motivate our rangers so that they do not engage in poaching activities,” “It was noted that a number of issues such as low staff morale, lack of community benefits and hunting quota anomalies are fuelling poaching in Zimbabwe,” Oppah Muchinguri told a meeting of conservationists, government and security officials on Thursday while calling for improvements in their working conditions.

This is a classical case of lack of emotional intelligence and the cascading effect on economic growth.( culled from the guardian). Food security. Working conditions are very important to the growth of any economy.

The poaching in the various parks also stem from poor working conditions; salaries, health insurance, conducive environment will motivate workers on all spheres resulting in desired economic growth. Emotional intelligence. #emotional intelligence #foodsecurity

AGRICULTURE : A NEW APPROACH.

The raising of birds can be a tedious task, or outright stressful if you dont know how to raise birds. The myth in the chain can be broken with proper education and hands-on work through with professionals. There are various methods of investing in the poultry value chain, these are direct and indirect investment. The common mode of investment here is the direct type; here the investors are involved in various stages of production that resonant with them. Agriculture The indirect phase, the investors pay a certain amount of money depending on level of investment such as gold, bronze and diamond. The investors partners with agri investors, that raise the birds, sell and give profit to the investor. This is an easy way of investing in the value chain, just pay required amount according to level of participation. Its with so much excitement that i announce the participation of a foreign agri-investment company to the investors forum. The company are coming down with all their expertise ,partnering with farmers to ensure food security.I was amazed at their track records, fast delivery, monitoring of progress of business online, broilers the Ross type, ready for market at 2.6kg at 6 weeks, and the investment is safe and covered by agreements backed by law. This is a new approach to the poultry value chain, another MDGS goal realized by partnering with foreign bodies for growth and development. Yes, you can be a silent partner in the poultry value chain and still make profit. The march towards food security and sustainability is on,and the call for investors to the value chain is on-going.The players in this value chain have been highlighted and our network increasing daily. These group of investors bring all the players of the chain on a platform; a central data pool. This platform will be multifaceted,it will bring all the aspects of the chain together, providing a tracking and tracing model, which will be a planning tool, marketing tool and learning platform. How will it work?? the platform will have data of those involved in the various aspect of the chain, their location, the aspect of production they are involved in and the population of the birds. This information will give data on vaccination/medication, so that at any point in time the health status of various sets of birds can be accessed. The platform will be a marketing tool, where manufacturers of drugs, feed, farm tools can reach out to customers. The platform will be a vital tool for planning, because you know the number of birds in chain, the vaccines can be acquired, medications/vitamins can be sourced and distributed. Each chain operator will have a code, this will allow tracing, tracking and tailored medical interventions. The platform will grant open access to all strata of the chain; linking all aspects together so that customers can access all sale information on the site.Training and learning will be available on site, with hand outs, webinars and interactive forum;where producers can be tutored and new interested producers can be trained. The platform will make access about the chain easy, the platform will also be a money market where goods and services can be accessed and paid for by using your phone. This platform will provide an onsite information about the value chain. Partnership with local and international companies for exchange of technology will be easy using this inter phase. The value change is broad and a platform for bringing all investors together is so vital to the success.

DOGS AND POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER.

Dogs are usually a therapy aid for people with post traumatic stress disorder, helping them to stay balanced and healthy.Post traumatic stress disorder is a mental condition provoked by traumatic experiences usually associated with war and military personnel. The military dogs that accompany the officers to war, are now showing signs of the PTSD. A recent report confirms this and also the fact that not only war dogs are susceptible; read more here http://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/nov/11/canine-ptsd-us-military-working-dogs

THE FORCE OF THE COCKROACH'S BITE.

A cockroach's bite packs a lot of force,at least 5 times stronger than a human's teeth. The cockroach bite can exert a force 50 times the body weight. The cockroach has the ability to activate muscle fibers in their jaws to boost their bite. The cockroach's bite ranges from quick and feeble bites to powerful, long-lasting ones. “The weaker and shorter bites are generated by relatively fast muscle fibres, while the longer and stronger bites were possible by activating muscle fibres that take time to reach their maximum force to cope with heavy duty tasks. This just further emphasizes the need to keep our environment pest free, the economic loss due to these pests are enormous. The use of insecticides should be encouraged to reduce loses , proper storage of feed and food materials are important. BIOTECHNOLOGY : A PARADIGM SHIFT.

Biotechnology making better crops and livestock by careful selection of traits to increase yield, produce disease and pest resistance and drought resistance products. This entails a collection of specific technique to improve plant and animals. Every living form; plants, animals and even micro organisms have codes called genes, which are information about what that living form. These genes represent traits about that living form that cannot be easily recognized by looking at the organism.Welcome to genetic engineering!!!.

The work on genes dates back to sir Mendel; who explained how traits can be transferred and also what traits to expect in selective breeding both in plants and animals. This method was adopted to produce desired progeny.

The work has progressed over the years with enormous technological development....resulting in biotechnology in agriculture. Agriculture has evolved over the years with many innovations to solve pressing issues such as food scarcity, diseases, environmental factors (such as flood, drought and arid region ),food preservation and lower yields.

These issues have been identified as major causes of lack of food security thus various solutions have been proffered typically biotechnology; which is the use of genetically engineered strains of plants and animals to produce better strains with higher yield and enhanced flavors. Farmers have been improving plants and animals through selection and breeding desirable traits.

Bio technology enhances breeders ability to make improvement in crops and livestock, this is achieved through various techniques used to improve plants and animals. Bio technology use gene modification, genetic improvement and genetic engineering.

Crops improved with transferred DNA referred to as genetic improvement have been developed to aid farmers to increase productivity . Biotechnology holds the key to food security with higher yield and better products Genetic modification/genetic improvement/genetic engineering; refers to the process where there is transfer of useful characteristics into plants and animals.

This process allows transfer of specific traits to plants or animals to produce improved and better versions.Crops improved with genetic modification aid farmers to increase productivity by reducing crop damage from weeds, diseases and insects.

Molecular markers; the use in agriculture involves the use of DNA of a plant/animal that posses desirable trait, even when not visible. This has resulted in breeding that are more specific and ensure better products. This process has been used by the international institute of tropical agriculture to produce cow pea resistant to bruchid, disease resistant white yam and cassava resistant to cassava mosaic disease.

Molecular markers is useful to identify undesirable genes that can be eliminated in future generation. Molecular diagnosis are methods to detect genes/gene products that are very precise and specific.Molecular diagnosis are used in agriculture to accurately diagnose crops and livestock diseases

.The application in agriculture is vaccine production, these vaccines are cheaper, better and safer. They are stable at room temperature, hence refrigeration is not necessary making it very acceptable in remote villages. In the Philippines, biotechnology has been used to develop an improved vaccine to protect cattle and water buffalo against hemorrhagic septicemia. Tissue culture; this is the regeneration of plants in laboratory from disease-free plant part.

This technique allows for the reproduction of disease free planting material for crops. This method has been used to produce improved crops such as pineapples, bananas, pawpaws and avocados. This tissue culture has also been used in food production especially cheese making,,also in animal husbandry where a sheep(dolly) was produced from mammary cells.

The potential of biotechnology is explosive and can solve food scarcity issues and environmental pollution and food poisoning from use of pesticides. The process of biotechnology have produced crops that have been engineered to produce their own Bt protein(bacillus thuringiensis) a soil bacterium that contains a protein

ANIMAL THERAPY FOR BETTER HEALTH.

Getting around used to be a challenge for 11 year-old Bella Burton. Because of a rare genetic condition called Morquio Syndrome that affects her bones, she couldn't walk without crutches, and often used a wheelchair. That all changed when she got her Great Dane, George. All pets change their owners lives for the better — but the bond between this service dog and his little girl is truly special. Watch the story that has everybody talking: Read more at http://www.sunnyskyz.com/good-news/1387/This-Little-Girl-Couldn-t-Walk-Until-She-Met-Her-REALLY-Great-Dane#jIoHXIZ3Zm86xVPz.99 Dr. Paul Weiss, a pediatric dentist from Williamsville, N.Y., has reportedly trained his golden retriever, Brooke, to act as a therapy dog to calm the nerves of his young patients. BIOTECH KEY TO FOOD SECURITY.

Biotechnology is one of the various ways of using scientific principles and techniques to produce crops that are pure strains and resistant to diseases. Biotechnology, nanotechnology, genetic engineering are all scientific interventions to produce better crops, improve plants, animals and microorganisms to enhance their value. The world today is faced with population explosion; the growth of the population is not at the same rate as food production and processing leaving most developing countries on poverty threshold and food scarcity. The world now is looking at strategies for food security and sustainability to eliminate hunger and eradicate poverty. Biotechnology has actually shown great potential to achieve food security in the agricultural sector where it has been used to develop plant strains that are resistant to pests and diseases.

Biotechnology has also been employed to improve food processing, nutritional value better flavor and productivity of plants, vegetables and other food crops. Agric biotechnology is the use of scientific techniques to modify and improve crops by selective breeding. Advances in science especially in the field of molecular biology has provided scientist with ability to manipulate food at molecular level referred to as genetic engineering

.The technique employed in genetic engineering is the transfer of DNA from species with specific desired traits into distantly related organisms. Genetic engineering allows the transfer of one or more traits from specific organism, plants, animals and microorganism and introduce them to new strains to come up with genetically modified strains with better productivity. The technology era has brought with it innovation , information , inputs and institutional support to enhance economic growth and development. The use of technology to ensure food security cannot be overemphasized, and so many options are at our fingertips to ensure food sustainability.

Food can be cultivated in nutrient media instead of soil, and this is done in a controlled environment this system is referred to as hydroponics /aeroponics depending on the conditions of growth. This system enables farming even in your room or balcony or any small space that can house the system you want to adopt. Technology bringing change in its track; who could have imagined farming without soil or land? can you imagine planting tomatoes or vegetables or even yam in a column -like stand or table?

Welcome to the world of BIOTECH; feeding the world with ease. Biotech, are you still skeptical?? dont really understand or know the benefits??

A local Hawaiian plant pathologist named Dennis Gonsalves had an idea. He spliced a snippet of the DNA of the virus into the papaya genome — and it worked. It made the papaya resistant to the virus. “His pioneering work is credited with rescuing the papaya industry,” says Ronald. “Twenty years later, no other method is as effective.” 80% of all Hawaiian papaya is now engineered in this way. Next, she brings us to Bangladesh, where a caterpillar pest is ravaging the eggplant crop. “To control this pest, farmers spray insecticides 2 to 3 times a week, sometimes even twice a day,” says Ronald. Of course, this threatens their own health. “It’s estimated that 300,000 people die every year because of exposure and misuse of insecticides.(http://blog.ted.com/why-genetic-engineering-of-plants-is-vital-for-food-security-pamela-ronald-speaks-atgolden rice-ted2015/)

WHY CLAMOR FOR GOLDEN RICE???

Golden rice is rich in beta-carotene. It is also easily processed by your digestive system. In fact, the natural fatty lipids in golden rice aid in the absorption of beta-carotene, even when little or no oil is added to it. When oil is added to rice it helps your body absorb the carotenoids in it, but in the case of golden rice oil is not necessary to reap the benefits. Other benefits of golden rice include: increased energy (which comes from the starch located within the rice) and a low fat content. A diet deficient in vitamin A results in increased risk of life-threatening medical conditions and diseases . Golden Rice Benefits – Lowers Risk of Blindness, Infections, Cancers and Diseases Golden rice has the ability to lower your risk of blindness, infections, cancers and diseases. A vitamin A deficiency can increase your risk of vision impairments, age-related macular degeneration and blindness. It can also worsen infections (measles, HIV, AIDS, chicken pox, etc.), especially in children. Approximately 125 million children, worldwide, exhibit chronically low levels of vitamin A (Wright, Hinchliffe & Adams, 2005). The carotenoids found in golden rice can combat adult degenerative diseases. Other benefits of golden rice include: a lower risk of both a variety of heart diseases and prostate, breast and skin cancers. – Reduces Gastrointestinal Distress Another one of the benefits of golden rice is that it can reduce gastrointestinal distress. In fact, it is considered a beneficial food to eat following an episode of diarrhea, regardless of the cause. Golden rice behaves like a mild astringent in your gastrointestinal system, which supports easy digestion and restores your intestinal mucus following an episode of gastroenteritis and colitis. – Reduces High Blood Pressure and High Cholesterol Golden rice is a low-fat and low-sodium food; therefore it is especially beneficial for lowering high blood pressure and cholesterol. High levels of sodium, a mineral, can lead to fluid accumulation, edema (fluid retention) and a spike in blood volume. The excess fluid can increase your risk of high blood pressure. In other words, the more sodium you consume, the higher your blood pressure may soar. Moreover, one of the most valuable benefits of golden rice is that it prevents fiber-related biliary acids from accumulating in your intestines. Biliary acids found in the liver and transported to your intestines, aid cholesterol production. Golden rice contains no fat (i.e. no cholesterol); therefore it has the ability to regulate your unhealthy blood cholesterol levels. http://www.foodpyramid.com/what-is-golden-rice/

GOLDEN RICE AND VITAMIN A.

Golden rice is a form of rice with biosynthesis of beta-carotene (a form of vitamin A). In other words, golden rice is produced through genetic engineering. Beta-carotene gives golden rice its “golden” or “yellow” coloring. White rice, on the other hand, does not contain carotenoids (i.e. beta carotene) and therefore lacks that “golden” coloring. When you consume golden rice, the beta-carotene either accumulates in your fatty tissues or is transformed into vitamin A. It is important to understand that golden rice is genetically modified rice (GMO). It is a fortified food that is produced to combat a vitamin A deficiency in areas where this vitamin is scarce. More and more people are being diagnosed with a vitamin A deficiency. In fact, young children are the most vulnerable to vitamin-related deficiencies. Approximately 1 million children die of a vitamin A deficiency each year. A vitamin A deficiency can severely affect a child’s eyesight; weaken his/her immune system function and increase his/her risk of chronic conditions. Moreover, in underdeveloped countries, approximately half-a-million people, mostly children, develop blindness, associated with a vitamin A deficiency. Approximately 50% of those diagnosed with this type of deficiency-related blindness die a year or two after becoming blind (Wright, Hinchliffe & Adams, 2005). To make matters worse, approximately 10 million children suffer from malnutrition every year. In severe cases, the malnutrition turns deadly (Wright, Hinchliffe & Adams, 2005). The production of new varieties of crop not only ensure food security, but also produce disease resistant strains and crops with medical advantages. The road to food security is mapped by biotech and integration of these techniques in plant and animal production.

GENETIC ENGINEERING AND FOOD SECURITY.

Pamela Ronald talks about her work as a plant geneticist, about her work “studying genes that make plants resistant to disease and tolerant of stress.

”Genetic improvement of plants isn’t new, she says. Ancient corn had a case so hard that it couldn’t be chewed; the ancient banana was full of large seeds; ancient brussels sprouts weren’t actually individual objects.

“To create these crops, breeders used many kinds of genetic techniques,” says Ronald. “Today breeders have even more the options choose from. Some of them are extraordinarily precise.

” She moves on to her own work on rice, “the staple food for more than half the world’s population.” Every year, 40% of the rice harvest is lost to pests and disease.

“Farmers rely on varieties that carry genes for resistance. Read more ;http://blog.ted.com/why-genetic-engineering-of-plants-is-vital-for-food-security-pamela-ronald-speaks-at-ted2015/

ELEPHANT DEATHS IN ZIMBABWE PARK.

Zimbabwe’s environment minister has blamed the poisoning of at least 71 elephants in recent months on disgruntled game rangers and local communities who do not benefit from wildlife revenues. “It was noted that a number of issues such as low staff morale, lack of community benefits and hunting quota anomalies are fueling poaching in Zimbabwe,” Oppah Muchinguri told a meeting of conservationists, government and security officials on Thursday. “We have all heard the devastating news of the cyanide poisoning that has claimed the lives of 71 elephants at Hwange national park in recent weeks,” she said. “We need to motivate our rangers so that they do not engage in poaching activities,” Muchinguri said, calling for improvements in their working conditions. Staff motivation, better wages and good working conditions are so essential in any enterprise; any venture where revenue is generated needs administrators with emotional intelligence to prevent sabotage of the business. The effects of poaching on wildlife is further revealed by this act, read more;http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/nov/12/zimbabwe-blames-disgruntled-rangers-and-villagers-for-elephant-poisonings.

IMPROVING NUTRITION AND FOOD SECURITY.

A walk through the annual Kerala seedfest, in the sultry heat of India’s Western Ghats, is like a walk through a proverbial garden of Eden; okra the size of a hand; deep purple coloured runner beans; 26 varieties of chillies from one village alone. The size and colours of multiple bananas on offer here make a mockery of the fact that your average supermarket sells just one type. With women and men standing proudly alongside their produce, this celebration of seeds and biodiversity is the future of farming: it is abundant, resilient and most importantly, smallholder led. SOCIAL PROTECTION , WOMEN AND FOOD SECURITY.

( Photo credit; internet). Social protection; simply refers to programmes, policies ,laws and regulation that are designed to reduce poverty and vulnerability by providing a way of escape by tackling these issues .Social protection seeks to support those that are at risk because of sickness, illness, disability ,exclusion and old age.Social protection is to provide help to those in need and prevent shock caused by these factors. The sector of the society basically affected are women and children; they are at risk of shock caused by lack, discrimination, disability, poverty e.t.c. Social protection is vital to food security as the women and children which are part of the work force are segregated/discriminated and holed up by laws that hamper productivity. The land laws are big issues in certain parts of Africa, where land rights are given to men; how will the women make a living without farmlands? how about education? how many girls are in school/or learning a skill that will be a source of income. Traditional beliefs such as female genital mutilation, this must be addressed; social protection must cover all unlawful acts and practices that prevent the provision of normal basic amenities and human rights .Equal land rights, employment opportunities,a means of livelihood, right to life, education, primary health care and a cell-group where there are interactions, discussion and training is the best form of social protection that will ensure economic growth, and food security.

VITAMIN C FOR DOGS.

Vitamin C is synthesized in liver of healthy dogs, but this ability is compromised in sick, debilitated and old dogs.Vitamin C is also depleted in cases of stress such as prolonged exercise, lactation, pregnancy, surgery and vaccinations. The level of stress a dog experiences can be measured by the level of depletion of vitamin c in the dogs blood.Dogs placed on supplements of vitamin C,show greater resistance to disease and exhibit better recovery from illness and injuries. Dogs with skin diseases usually have low levels of vitamin C. Vitamin C can be very low or absent in dogs with fever or have exercised beyond limits.Vitamin C improves the immune functions by enhancing the white blood cell function and activity.Vitamin C increases the blood level of interferon the body's natural antiviral and anti cancer compounds and antibodies, this is the reason its used to treat cancer. The effect of vitamin c on immune system is utilized in treating kennel cough, respiratory infections, abscess and bacterial infection. Vitamin C, maintains health of collagen, this is very important in reversing degenerative joint diseases, hip dysplasia, arthritis and spinal disorders.Young and old dogs benefit from vitamin C supplement; the young dogs exposed to various stressors and the old dogs with joint issues e.t.c. Vitamin C is very vital to dog's health and really comes in handy in practice, when presented with a weak, debilitated dog or lethargic dog , i always include a shot of vitamin C with my protocol and it always a success. When faced with cold/ cough i always give it alongside antibiotics and its also the only treatment for canine distemper. Vitamin C is very handy, add it to your medicine box.In poultry ,when birds are to be vaccinated; i dissolve some tablets in their drinking water 2 days before vaccination. When birds are dull/inactive with low feed consumption; just add vitamin C to their water for 3 days you will be amazed at the turn around. When you observe that birds are stressed, give cool water with vitamin C . Vitamin C ; a little does a lot of magic. #dogs #photoofdogs #petcare

BROILER DISEASES AND VACCINATION.

COCCIDIOSIS Coccidiosis vaccines are often used in poultry raised without antibiotics, as well as in conventional production systems that need to rest in-feed anticoccidials and restore their efficacy. The vaccines tend to be used in summer months, when coccidiosis pressure subsides with increased ventilation. Producers then switch back to ionophores or synthetic anticoccidials. In the US, broiler operations have the option of administering coccidiosis vaccine in ovo or on day 1 as a hatchery spray. According to Cookson, the choice hinges on company philosophy, production history and management preferences. “The challenge with coccidiosis vaccine is getting good, uniform delivery of the vaccinal oocysts that stimulate the bird’s natural immune system,” Keck says. “Zoetis research with alternative delivery systems has shown great potential for helping improve vaccine and flock performance.” He points out that the first round of coccidial vaccination is a transition period for most growers as birds often face both a field and vaccination challenge. “Because vaccines may initially cause short-term intestinal disruption and loss in performance, they are usually more practical and cost-effective to use in medium to large birds that have more time to make up for lost weight,” he says. E. COLI E. coli has become more prevalent in broiler operations that have discontinued antibiotics in the hatchery. In addition, cool, wet weather increases the incidence of secondary E. coli infections due to respiratory challenges from IBV, ILT and ND. E. coli can also occur as a primary disease. As a day-of-age spray, E. coli vaccination is gaining acceptance for its ability to help decrease mortality, particularly in large birds, Keck says. Vitamin C provides protection against eye diseases, skin wrinkling, cardiovascular disease, cancer and diseases of immune system.Vitamin C is an antioxidant that preserves life and ensures relief from stress. Vitamin C is water soluble and easily eliminated through urine. The benefits of vitamin C include boosting the body's ability to synthesize calcium , it also boosts brain function, and rebuild tissue, bones and blood vessels. Vitamin C is essential for fertility in man. Vitamin C boosts sperm count and semen volume. The common sources are oranges, lime, lemon, bell peppers, tomato juice, pineapple, peas, leafy vegetables, peas, pawpaws e.t.c.The vitamin C content in peppers are high, and also the beta carotene of pepper make it excellent for cardiovascular health, thus reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Vitamin C is also of benefit in dogs. Vitamin C is an essential nutrient for proper body metabolic activities, thus it must be included in diet.Dogs synthesize vitamin C in their own liver, but stress, age and diseases easily disrupt the production hence it must be included in the diet.

ANIMAL ASSISTED THERAPY.

Animals have been known to impact health of humans. Dogs and cat are the common therapy assistants but new insights show that all animals have a role to play in health of man. A cat in a home with an elderly keeps such patients alert and healthy, the minimal movements in the house to feed the cat,a stroll in the garden and even the gentle snuggling of the cat on the lap with light stroking gives life to the patient. Dogs visit old people, sick children and they spread so much love that patients have recorded tremendous improvements.Dogs aside from been companions and rescue dogs, they also impact heaith. Dogs are trained to know sugar levels in diabetic patients, which come in very handy in diabetic patients. Animals are great to have around. read more here ;.http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/278173.php

MALARIA PROTEIN USED FOR CANCER TREATMENT.

Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to the malaria parasite because it produces a protein that binds readily to a sugar molecule in the placenta. This same sugar molecule is also found in most cancer cells; researchers have shown it is possible to attach anticancer drugs to the malaria protein and use it to deliver them precisely to tumors by targeting the sugar. While the fact that the same sugar molecule (a type of chondroitin sulfate) is found in both the placenta and most cancers is not surprising - since both have cells that grow fast - the evidence for this has only surfaced recently, as senior author Mads Daugaard, an assistant professor of urologic science at UBC, explains: Once the team discovered that the malaria parasite uses a protein it produces called VAR2CSA to embed itself in the placenta, they immediately saw the potential to use the process as a way to target cancer drugs to tumors. VITAMIN C AND COLORECTAL CANCER.

Vitamin C ,a nutritional supplement with potent anti oxidant properties has been identified as a cure for certain forms of cancer. Colorectal cancer which is prevalent and difficult to treat has been found to respond to vitamin c oxidation, thus giving another reason to take vitamin c.The vitamin is found in high levels in oranges, and using about 300 oranges ,there has been a reaction on the tumor cells. AFRICAN ELEPHANTS AND CANCER IN MAN.

Anew study indicates that successful cancer treatment can be studied and analyzed from reaction of elephants to cancer cells. The research revealed that elephants possess at least 20 copies of a major tumor-suppressor gene called TP53, while healthy humans only have one copy, with two alleles (gene variants) inherited from each parent. People with LFS only inherit one functioning allele of the TP53 gene, according to the team, putting them at a 90-100% lifetime risk for cancer. The researchers explain that the TP53 gene plays role in the response to DNA damage by triggering a form of cell death called apoptosis via the p53 protein. Compared with human lymphocytes, the researchers found that elephant lymphocytes were subject to p53-induced apoptosis at higher rates. Based on their findings, the team suggests the additional copies of the TP53 gene and increased p53-induced apoptosis in elephants have evolved to protect them against cancer.
