AGRIBUSINESS : WOMEN EMPOWERMENT,MDGS AND POULTRY VALUE CHAIN.
AGRIBUSINESS : WOMEN EMPOWERMENT,MDGS AND POULTRY VALUE CHAIN.
The poultry value chain is a means of empowering women, this will in turn ensure food security while also encouraging children to go to school. The chain has various phases that can accommodate women; the egg sales/distribution, raising birds, selling packaged chicken, live chicken and also selling various chicken parts and opening food courts.
AGRIBUSINESS : WOMEN EMPOWERMENT,MDGS AND POULTRY VALUE CHAIN. Women make up a large % of farmers, that ensure food is available for the home front and for sale as well.
When women are provided with chicks/space/feed/cages; any form of seed capital will ensure a turn around that they can live on.The women are responsible for the upkeep of their children, where the mothers have no means of livelihood, the children suffer and cant go to school.
When women are empowered, more kids go to school and the school feeding programme is another area of empowerment. The women in an area/community could be organized to groups/subgroups; where a group produces, and other group prepares provided food stuff for the school children. This way at least the children are sure of nutritious meals at home and school.
AGRIBUSINESS:HOW TO TAKE CARE OF CHICKENS.
AGRIBUSINESS:HOW TO TAKE CARE OF CHICKENS.
AGRIBUSINESS:HOW TO TAKE CARE OF CHICKENS. The success of the venture depends on following strict health protocols that are wrapped around simple but effective bio security protocol. The health protocol involves vaccinations coupled with medications. The use of drugs take into consideration the withdrawal time,so as not to process birds with antibiotic residue for human consumption.
Vaccination refers to a method of disease prevention in healthy animals by challenging the animal with an attenuated/killed agent of a disease so as to elicit the production of antibodies.
When vaccinations are done properly and immunity conferred, the animal is said to have been immunized against such causative agents of disease.Vaccination though stimulates antibodies production to protect the animals ,but if not done properly ;the desired immunity will not be conferred. When immunity is not conferred,2 major causes are fingered. These are vaccine failure or vaccine break.
When immunity is not conferred due to vaccine break, the following are causes; 1)when the cold chain is broken; usually from point of sale to area you need them. The vaccines are to be transported in coolers with enough ice packs for the trip. The potency of the vaccines cant be guaranteed when this occurs, and when used the required immunity is not conferred.
2) when using inappropriate dilution and concentration; this nullifies any effect the vaccine should have on the birds.
3)when expired vaccines are used, definitely no immunity can be conferred.
While vaccine failure could occur in any of the following scenarios;1)using inappropriate dose; under/overdosing will not elicit any antibody reaction.
2)wrong dilution/route.
3)vaccination of sick birds.
4)stress on birds during handling especially in hot weather.
5)Use of chemicals along side the vaccines especially water purification solutions.
6)vaccinating birds when signs of diseases are visible in flock.
AGRIBUSINESS:HOW TO TAKE CARE OF CHICKENS. Vaccinations, though very essential ,if not properly carried out will just be a waste of resources.
When planning to vaccinate; keep it simple.
1)place vaccine in ice pack.
2)engage qualified personnel.
3) use vaccine as directed by manufacturers.

AGRIBUSINESS: COMMON CAUSES OF CHICK MORTALITY .
AGRIBUSINESS: COMMON CAUSES OF CHICK MORTALITY .
The brooding phase of production is the determinant of the overall success of the venture. This is definitely hinged on procurement of healthy chicks from renowned hatcheries. The management factor is key to the success of other operations in the cycle hence extra attention must be given to birds for the first few weeks of life.
The common causes of chick mortality are; 1) hatchery defects, this is common in birds that were not exposed to proper conditions of temperature and humidity in the incubator. The chicks that were brought out under such conditions, will not thrive at all, they will die off after a few days.
AGRIBUSINESS: COMMON CAUSES OF CHICK MORTALITY .Chocking and suffocation;these occurs when brooder lanterns/heating systems are faulty, this coupled with poor ventilation results in build up of smokes/fumes in the house. This results in inhalation of fumes by chicks resulting in chocking/suffocation.
Chilling; when the brooder house is cold and the heat source is not adequate, especially on cold nights when its cold. The chicks will huddle towards light source, resulting in death from overcrowding as a result of chilling.
AGRIBUSINESS: COMMON CAUSES OF CHICK MORTALITY .Thirst: when inadequate drinkers are provided and also when sufficient water is not made available, this will result in dehydration leading to death of chicks.
AGRIBUSINESS: COMMON CAUSES OF CHICK MORTALITY . Starvation, arise when adequate feed is not provided,or when necessary feeders are not provided, the chicks will not have access to enough feed. This will encourage huddling towards feeder, where only few birds have access to feed, causing starvation and eventual death in the birds.Where the birds dont have enough water, they will not take adequate feed as well, because the chicks need twice amount of water for feed consumed.
Trauma; can arise from improper handling, wrong placement of brooder equipment,or using equipment with sharp edges resulting in injuries that can result in death or deformation. This results in culling of deformed chicks.
There are disease conditions that cause mortalities such as,yolk sac omphalities, aspergillosis, chronic respiratory disease, salmonellosis e.t.c.This will be discussed later.

Quail # quail farming.
Quail birds are small sized birds that lay small sized tinted eggs but are packed with vitamins.
The sizes of the birds make it easy to manage, and their life cycle also encourages rearing in-house or out in the barn. The most common species are the Bob white quail and the Japanese quail; Coturnix japonlca.
The quails have some advantages over the chicken; 1) the female quail begin to lay at 6 weeks and this continues for a year.2)They require minimal space for raising; the requirement is about 2 birds per square metre. 3) The quails are efficient feed converters; each quail egg is about 8% of the weight, while the chicken gives 3% of her weight. 4) They can also be slaughtered at 6 weeks.
QUAIL MANAGEMENT.
Males and females are raised to produce fertile eggs, which is a ratio-of 2 females to one male. It’s important to maintain this ratio because more males exposed to caged females will result in one male dominating, and pecking and injuring the other males.
The ideal method is to have 1 male +2 females in a cage, and within 24 hours the egg produced is fertile and fertility is maintained for 3 weeks even after the male has been removed.(Woodward et al 73).The quails don’t sit on their eggs, so eggs collected are set in the incubator. The eggs hatch in 16 days.
QUAILS AND THE IMPACT IN THE POULTRY VALUE CHAIN.
Quails are easy to raise as they require little space and are easy to handle. The birds consume less feed but have high feed conversion ratio, with high laying intensity. The quail birds though small are money making machines, every part of them yields money.
The birds can be raised for meat, table eggs, fertile eggs, their waste can be processed and sold as fertilizer, and the feathers can also be processed and used as ornaments. Let’s look at the various stages: the females start laying about 6weeks,
Let’s assume you keep 300 birds, they will lay 300 eggs a day that is 10 crates a day. This egg laying intensity is to our advantage, as the bird’s consume 25g of feed/day.
The birds can be processed at about 8 weeks; they can be smoked and packed for sale.
HOUSING.
Quails are raised in house or out in the yard. The cages can be wooden or made from iron. The floor is made of wire so that dropping are collected under the cages. The floor is slanted so that eggs are rolled to the front of the cages for easy collection.
Feeding.
The birds are given good quality feed and water is made available always.vitamins and minerals can be added to the water once a while, but this is of utmost value in hot weather. The birds can be given worms and some green as supplements to the feed.

HOW TO TURN CRACKED EGGS TO MONEY IN THE POULTRY VALUE CHAIN.
:
Cracked eggs on the farm!, a farmers worst nightmare. The issue of cracked eggs borders on management practices, how the eggs are picked,sorted/graded and stored.
Cracked eggs are results in losses in the poultry industry, and can be a profit blocker if not properly managed.
Cracked eggs, though a cause of concern, the effect could be managed if underling management issues are addressed.
.Cracked eggs could be turned to a money-spinning venture with some creative stints.
The following are ways in which wealth could be generated from cracked eggs;
1) sell to caterers who prefer to buy cracked eggs,as it will be used immediately.
2) food vendors; those that make food at street corners ,usually fry these eggs immediately and get value for the eggs.
3) These eggs could be powdered, packaged and sold to food processing companies.
4) The eggs can also be sold as liquid eggs or frozen eggs; which are valuable in the food court, ice cream companies e.t.c
The waste to wealth initiative could also benefit from cracked eggs; depending on the number of eggs available and poultry houses involved in the scheme, these eggs could be collected and cooked in central kitchen that caters for poor, homeless people. Cracked but still valuable.

FOOD SECURITY AND POULTRY VALUE CHAIN.
Food security and sustainability is hinged on more technology. How to feed the ever growing population is not by acquiring more land, but by making meaningful use of technology at our disposal. The various aspects of agriculture can be enhanced using technology to produce much more food, within a limited period of time and also increase yield.
The road to food security is paved with technology in terms of genetic engineering, making better strains of plants and animals that can thrive in our environment and give us necessary eggs and chicken providing more protein for the nation. The breeding of indigenous strains with imported strains to improve our local strains and expand our market .
The use of technology to transform chicken poop to power,to run our farm estates and surrounding houses. The integration of biogas technology to our everyday life, will not only generate power, but will reduce overhead costs. This will also prevent environmental hazards,as harmful gases are not released to the environment, thus preventing health complications.
Technology is our ticket to food security, take the leap!!!!

MY EYES ON THE FUTURE.........................LOOKING THROUGH THE BIRD VIEW EXPERIENCE.
BREAKING THE MYTH IN THE POULTRY VALUE CHAIN.
The raising of birds can be a tedious task, or outright stressful if you dont know how to raise birds. The myth in the chain can be broken with proper education and hands-on work through with professionals. There are various methods of investing in the poultry value chain, these are direct and indirect investment. The common mode of investment here is the direct type; here the investors are involved in various stages of production that resonant with them.
The indirect phase, the investors pay a certain amount of money depending on level of investment such as gold, bronze and diamond. The investors partners with agri investors, that raise the birds, sell and give profit to the investor.
This is an easy way of investing in the value chain, just pay required amount according to level of participation. Its with so much excitement that i announce the participation of a foreign agri-investment company to the investors forum. The company are coming down with all their expertise ,partnering with farmers to ensure food security.I was amazed at their track records, fast delivery, monitoring of progress of business online, broilers the Ross type, ready for market at 2.6kg at 6 weeks, and the investment is safe and covered by agreements backed by law.
This is a new approach to the poultry value chain, another MDGS goal realized by partnering with foreign bodies for growth and development. Yes, you can be a silent partner in the poultry value chain and still make profit.

GREEN LAGOS AND POULTRY VALUE CHAIN.
The poultry industry is a viable sector ensuring food security and contributing to the GDP of the economy. The revenue generated from this industry has been harnessed to drive growth and development but better management practices can actually increase the figures and provide more by- products that will further propel growth.
The waste produced by the birds is a threat to the environment because of improper disposal and utilization of millions of tons of manure and litter soiled droppings produced daily. The waste generated by poultry is a problem to farmers as the high nitrogen content of the waste releases ammonia fumes in the air making environment unbearable, hence most poultry farmers are at a loss at how to manage the waste.
Poultry waste normally is used as fertilizer for vegetable farm but it must be stored for about a period of 6 months before it can be used, the use of poultry waste to make bio-gas is a much better way.
Chicken waste can be used to produce eco-friendly bio-gas which will provide energy in form of heat, gas(methane) for cooking and electricity and the digested slurry is disposed as treated fertilizer which has better market value.
The use of the chicken manure to make gas requires specialized digester: the chicken manure is a peculiar waste to use to generate bio--gas because of the high nitrogen content ,but technology has found a way around it .
The use of a specialized pre-treatment technology makes the anaerobic digestion easy, and the gas generated can be used to power homes and business across the country.
The use of waste to generate electricity in the world today has various advantages to the individuals, nation and the environment.
The waste generated in the poultry industry, the livestock farms, agricultural waste, food waste and human waste can be channeled into a bio-gas plant to produce methane, heat and electricity.
The power generation in most countries need to be upgraded to serve the populace better, drive industrial growth and maintain a safe environment. The millions of tons of chicken droppings/litter can be channeled and put in a bio-gas plant to generate electricity. Waste of poultry has before now been a menace to the society because of improper management and disposal, but with the introduction of a pre-treatment technology that treats the waste before its passed to the anaerobic digester, for breakdown to produce the desired products.
The use of chicken waste to generate power will reduce cost of production in the manufacturing industry, which will translate to lowered overhead cost, lower prices of products and more profit for manufacturers.![]()
