RESEARCH: CASSAVA AND FERTILITY.

RESEARCH: CASSAVA AND FERTILITY.The Cassava plant contains a chemical that causes hyper-ovulation. Cassava works by the same method as prescription fertility drugs, without the side effects. Natural hormones called GnRH released by Cassava fool the brain into thinking there is insufficient estrogen, causing the brain to naturally release more of a hormone called gonadotropin, and dramatically increases the ovulation rate. Cassava is known world wide for its effects on fertility. It helps with increasing the chance of twins, but also with overall fertility. Many women use this supplement to increase fertility even when they’re not trying for twins.

Scientists develop groundnut resistant to aflatoxin.

Scientists develop groundnut resistant to aflatoxin. The discovery has the potential to drastically improve food safety and reduce losses caused by the contamination from the poisonous carcinogen, aflatoxin.

The discovery was recently published in the Plant Biotechnology Journal. Aflatoxins pose a major risk to human and animal health worldwide and result in an enormous amount of food waste.

The molds, Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus, which infect groundnut, maize, cottonseed and chilly, produce these toxins which suppress the immune system, hinder growth in children and even cause liver cancer. The fungus which produces these toxins can stay dormant in soil for years. It infects maize and groundnut during drought and heat stress.

Contamination also happens when grain is stored in hot, humid and poorly-ventilated conditions. Since aflatoxins are potent carcinogens, the United States does not allow the sale and export of food with aflatoxin levels exceeding 20 parts per billion (ppb). European Union standards are more stringent; the bar is 2 ppb.

Agriculture and healthy food systems.

Agriculture has taken center stage in the race for food security with many countries bringing out strategies and platforms to incorporate more people to achieve the goal. Agriculture and agribusiness has proven to be a major key for economic growth, the cry to go back to the field is not only wealth creation and generation but also to ensure healthy living.
The war against antibiotic misuse in farmed animals has opened the eyes of many to the fact that eating more greens is a sure ticket to healthy living. The rise in cases of cancer, obesity, heart diseases and diabetes has been linked to over consumption of over-processed foods with numerous additives that actually impact the health of man.

The adage" you are what you eat, is aptly rephrased as you are what your animals eat." The consumption of grass-fed cattle according to studies does not predispose to cancer as against others fed with different ration.

The balance between agriculture and healthy living starts from farm to fork, where animals are fed balanced rations without additives or hormones and also the processing and packaging are done in hygienic environment to prevent contamination of products and infection in the consumers.

The changing of diet to include more greens, leafy vegetables will also play a vital role in healthy living. Urban agriculture will not only open doors to wealth creation, but will also ensure that more families have access to farm fresh foods daily.

CANINE OBESITY.

A morbidly obese Texas dachshund once dubbed “Fat Vincent” because his belly was so large it hit the ground when he walked, has found its way out of animal shelter care by dropping half its body weight, on track to become healthy enough for a new owner. The 7-year-old canine with a love for fast food weighed a whopping 38 pounds (17.24 kg) with a body mass index of over 60 percent body fat in September when he was surrendered to a Houston animal shelter after his elderly owner died, according to his foster mother. His ideal healthy weight is around 16 pounds. "Besides terribly high cholesterol and BMI, Vincent’s back sloped downward in the middle and our vet was fearful that one false move would cause his back to break", said Melissa Anderson with K-9 Angels Rescue in Houston. Now dubbed “Skinny Vinnie,” the dog weighs 17.5 pounds due to a healthier diet, swimming with a life jacket in a pool and long walks, Anderson said, adding his fast food craving comes to life every time she goes to a drive-through window of a national coffee house chain. “He hops over to the driver’s seat, sticks his head out the window and waits for the order,” Anderson said. “He is always disappointed when the coffee arrives, but he never gives up hope.” Read more at http://newsdaily.com/2016/04/morbidly-plump-texas-wiener-dog-loses-weight-and-fat-vincent-name/#mOYyI01KU0YXi8sC.99
