CASSAVA MORE PROFITABLE THAN CORN.

CASSAVA MORE PROFITABLE THAN CORN. Cyril Cattiling, who owns a six-hectare cassava farm, smiles when discussing how he produces cassava. One secret he agreed to share is how he gives his crop TLC (tender loving care). He believes that with TLC, he and his fellow farmers in Alfonso Lista, Ifugao can have a bountiful cassava harvest. A proud father and husband, Cattiling is a hands-on cassava grower. He is also the president of the Ifugao Tapioca Growers Association (ITGA) and farm manager of the Yao Jia Xi Corporation, which supplies cassava granules to the San Miguel Corporation (SMC). The ITGA started in 2015 to organize all cassava growers in the municipality. It is composed of 75 members. Meanwhile Yao Jia Xi, a farming corporation, gives planting materials to and shares technology with farmers who are members of ITGA. The ITGA sells dried and granulated cassava to the Yao Jia Xi Corporation which then sells the same to SMC, a consistent buyer. Using a solar dryer and granulator for their cassava, the ITGA produces 250 to 300 bags of granulated cassava, which SMC buys for ₱9.70 per kilo Farming has always been Cattiling’s main source of income. He started cassava production in 2012, shifting to it from corn farming. Just like him, his fellow Ifugao farmers were once corn growers. But because of the high production cost of corn, some of them diversified to cassava production. Cassava has better economic benefits. “Cassava [production] offers a better income compared to corn,” said Cattiling, noting that this is true even though cassava is harvested just once a year. One hectare of corn earns him ₱25,000 while cassava gives him ₱130,000 per hectare from a capital of ₱30,000. With good land preparation and available markets, cassava can be profitable Related post: opportunities in garri value chain. Cassava value chain. UNVEILING THE OPPORTUNITIES IN THE CASSAVA /GARRI BUSINESS.

UNVEILING THE OPPORTUNITIES IN THE CASSAVA /GARRI BUSINESS. Cassava is the new goldmine in agribusiness. Cassava is an important food crop in the tropics as well as across the world. The opportunities in the cassava value chain are enormous.

There are more links and chains evolving and unfolding with increased innovation and technology. Cassava contributes to diets of over 800 million people, in some areas of Africa it constitutes over 50% of the daily diet of the population.

This shows that there is a very large market for it within Nigeria and overseas. Cassava is a money spinner as more and more value can be harnessed for local and international consumption through innovative products.

Cassava processing involves fermentation which is a plus for gut health.

The fermentation process removes the cyanogenic glucosides present in the fresh cassava. This method of processing is also a method of preservation

UNVEILING THE OPPORTUNITIES IN THE CASSAVA /GARRI BUSINESS: WHY GARRI? why the niche? this is why!!! Garri is easily accessible, affordable and a larger portion of the population are accustomed to the food.

Echbee foods thus decided to fortify what was already common in most homes to achieve our purpose of balanced meal with garri.

Garri which is the most common by -product is food for over 800 million people in the world, thus fortifying the garri to produce a highly nutritious cereal can generate over 120 billion naira as revenue.

Garri common called cassava flakes in some areas can be consumed raw, with cold water to form a delicious meal or mixed in hot water to make morsel that can be taken with various soups. Garri can be fortified with vitamins to produce delicious and nutritious meals.

Garri can be used to replace wheat flour thus making it suitable to bake bread, make pastries, pies, doughnut and so many other products. A new innovation has emerged where garri is used to make wholesome cereal for people of all ages.

 Garri loops.

Garri can be fortified with various supplements to make biscuits, akara, soups, energy bars, chocolate balls and so much more. Garri can be used to bake bread 100% and the texture , flavour and taste is exceptional.

WELCOME TO ECHBEE FOODS, WHERE WE TURN ORDINARY GARRI INTO EXTRAORDINARY PRODUCTS.

The use of garri instead of wheat to bake will save the government 6billion dollars annually, which is the amount of money spent on importation of wheat.

The expansion of the cassava value chain by promoting the use of garri instead of flour will achieve the following. 1) create more jobs. 2)create more nutritious products for children within and outside the country. 3) increased cassava cultivation, more money for farmers especially women frying the garri.

Cassava : Adding Value For Africa.

Cassava: Adding Value for Africa (C:AVA). Cassava or manioc (Manihot esculenta) is a perennial woody shrub with an edible root, which grows in tropical and subtropical areas of the world and has much ability to withstand difficult growing conditions. Cassava is one of the most drought-tolerant crops.

It is a starchy root tuber, native to South America and serves as a major source of calories and carbohydrates for people in developing countries.

Analysts believe that the most commonly consumed part of cassava is the root, which can be eaten whole, grated or ground into flour to make bread and crackers.  They note that cassava root is the raw material for tapioca and ‘garri’ a staple food in Nigeria.

Garri can replace flour in the use of bread and other confectioneries.  Echbee Foods has found innovative ways to use garri to provide wholesome nutritious meals that are affordable.

A Food Biochemist and Chief Executive of the So Tastee Cakes and Pastries, Mr Emmanuel Osiname, believes that individuals with food allergies can benefit from using cassava root in cooking and baking because it is gluten-free. He, however, advises that the cassava root must be dried, cooked and processed before eaten.

According to the Cassava: Adding Value for Africa (C:AVA), an initiative of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Nigeria is the largest producer of cassava in the world with current annual output of about 54 million metric tonnes. C:AVA made the observation in its training manual on the use of High Quality Cassava Flour (HQCF) in confectioneries. It is, however, worried that Nigeria does not contribute meaningfully in terms of value added in global trade.

Cassava Root: cassava enzymes can kill cancer cells.

#Cassava Root: Beats cancer instead of Chemo and Radiation! Plus it doesn't kill you! #Cassava root has Vitamin B-17 which cures cancer and boosts energy.

Cyanide in plants help protect it from insect attack, this protective mechanism is now helping to kill cancer cells in humans. Cassava is one of such plants and this is how it kills cancer cell.

The method of using the cassava root is to  remove 3 layers of the skin peeling and peel it all the way to the white or you could get cyanide poisoning!

The peeled cassava is grated then put in a blender with water and blended until fine. A yellowish fluid is a product of the mix, this is decanted, strained and consumed. If grated peeled cassava is blended or consumed raw and it kills cancer cells then further processing of the grated cassava to produce Garri is equally therapeutic for cancer.

The high fiber content of garri promotes bowel emptying thus preventing the risk of colon cancer. This high fiber garri can be processed in several ways to fit different age groups, making it a cheap and better source of wholesome food

Another method is to just grate the cassava that the 3 layer coatings have been removed and just  eat. #cassava

The benefits of garri as a source of fiber in diet.

RESEARCH: The benefits of fiber in diet. The recommended daily intake of fiber is 25 grams per day for women and 38 grams per day for men. However, some experts estimate as much as 95 percent of the population don’t ingest this much fiber.

Fiber is essential for regular bowel movements, cholesterol and blood sugar management, healthy gut bacteria, and preventing chronic disease, among other functions.

In populations that eat a regular high-fiber diet of more than 50 grams of fiber per day, like rural South Africans, chronic diseases such as colon cancer are very low. This is a stark contrast to the much higher risk of colon cancer among African-Americans who eat a higher fat diet with only about 15 grams of fiber per day.The benefits of fiber in diet.

In general, it’s better to get fiber from the food you eat than from supplements. This is because high-fiber foods also have important vitamins and minerals your body needs to stay healthy. There are two main types of fiber and each plays different roles in digestion.

Each type of fiber plays a different role in digestion:  insoluble and soluble fiber.

1) Insoluble fiber adds bulk to your stool and helps food pass more quickly through the stomach and intestines. It also helps balance the pH in your intestine, and may prevent diverticulitis, an inflammation of the intestine, as well as colon cancer. Insoluble fiber physically fills up space in the stomach and intestines, creating the sensation of being full which help people manage their weight. e.g garri and wheat bran.

  2) Soluble fiber absorbs water and forms a gel-like substance with food as it’s digested. This in turn slows down digestion and helps you feel full faster, which is important in weight management. It may also help lower your risk of heart disease, regulate your blood sugar, and help reduce LDL cholesterol.e.g .  apples, carrots

Garri can be fortified to make functional foods to promote good health. Garri can be used to produce different meals for different health needs.

Fermentable fibers can be from both these categories, though more often soluble fibers are fermented. Fibers fermented by bacteria help increase the bacteria in the colon, which aids digestion

AGRIBUSINESS: Nutritional benefits of cassava.

Nutritional benefits of cassava.#Cassava is a perennial, usually grown in tropical climates, very simply propagated by using a cut portion of the stem. The roots, often compared to large yams, can weigh several pounds. The leaves are also used for food and contain 100 times more protein than the root, but both must be cooked and the water discarded.

Cassava roots are close to what is known as white potatoes, cassava contains almost twice the calories, and may be the highest-calorie tuber known.

One cup of boiled cassava contains 330 calories, 78 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of protein and 4 grams each of fiber and sugar. Cassava is naturally gluten-free is extremely useful for celiac patients and others trying to avoid gluten.

One aspect of cassava is that it's one of several root foods defined by the Philippines' Department of Science and Technology as having a low glycemic index (GI) and therefore good for diabetics. GI is a classification of food based on the blood glucose response to a food relative to a standard glucose solution.

Low glycemic foods control the release of glucose into the bloodstream at a steady and sustained rate, keeping the body's metabolic processes and energy levels balanced. People with low glycemic diets or [who] eat low glycemic foods are said to have lower risk of getting coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

These food items that have low GI would benefit those who are already suffering from diabetes, since these would help in the proper control and management of blood sugar.

As a low-GI food, eating cassava can also help improve physical endurance because blood glucose levels are moderated instead of dropping when insulin is produced.

Low-GI foods also may help control triglyceride and other lipid levels in your blood. #Cassava has even been called a "weight loss wonder food" due to its ability to decrease appetite and decrease fat storage in fat cells.

B-complex vitamins contained in cassava include folate, thiamin, pyridoxine (vitamin B6), pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) and riboflavin (vitamin B2).

The root also includes a number of minerals that perform important functions throughout your body.

Cassava also contains saponins that can ease inflammation, break down organic body wastes like uric acid, cleanse mineral deposits from your joints and help balance your gut flora. #cassava #agribusiness #sme #money #entreprreneur

Cassava :How Farmers Can Earn N10trn From Cassava Processing.

How Farmers Can Earn N10trn From Cassava Processing.Nigeria is the highest producer of cassava in the world with over 40 million metric tonnes per annum. About 60 per cent of Nigerian farmers are involved in cassava production because it is one of the food security crops. Cassava roots can grow on any soil in Nigeria and it is virtually grown in the 36 states of the federation. It is very resistant to drought and survives in a variety of soils. But today investors are yet to understand the untapped investment opportunities and farmers hardly see cassava crop as avenue to hit hard currency. GROWING and producing cassava for local consumption, processing for industrial use and meeting the standard of exportation is a huge investment that can transform Nigeria’s economy with its potential to earn over N10 trillion annually and turn individuals to millionaires, even multi-billionaires from cassava project. Cassava tubers that may be processed into a variety of products that are gaining huge demand in the export market including chips, flakes popularly known as garri, cubes, peeler, starch for industrial and pharmaceutical use, flour, which can be eaten as elubo lafun or used in the bakery industry, pellets, glues and adhesives, ethanol and glucose syrup, among others. The National President of Cassava Growers Association, Pastor Segun Adewunmi, said that from cassava alone, Nigeria could make twice what the country was making at the peak of crude oil production. He pointed out that Nigeria has 84 million hectares of arable land, that if five million of hectares can be developed in five years, it would be enough to provide N10 trillion annually through industrial cassava to Nigeria’s economy. He added: “From cassava you get ethanol in two grades, including bio-fuel and the food grade. The food grade we are using in this country is worth N3 trillion and we have not even started with the one of bio-fuel and industrial starch.

AGRIBUSINESS: Women and cassava processing in Nigeria.

Women and cassava processing in Nigeria. Women are the key players in cassava production and processing in Nigeria. They are involved in the planting, harvesting, processing, distribution and sales. Cassava processing operations include peeling, grating, fermentation, pressing, roasting, cooking and milling.

The constraints women still face in cassava processing include manual peeling which is time consuming and tedious, natural fermentation process which takes a long time, inadequate processing equipment, lack of storage facilities, high transportation cost, high processing cost, lack of funds, unstable agricultural policies, ineffective linkages in the value chain, and lack or delayed technical support of extension services.

Their productivity is due to low input technologies, lack of resources as a result of poverty and inadequate government support.

Research technologies for small scale cassava processing have not adequately addressed the problems of women cassava processors in the gender perspective such as in the design of female-friendly tools for hydraulic pressing for ease of operation.

This can be addressed by Many of the cassava processing equipment produced by researchers are yet to be adopted by the rural processors

Empowering women cassava processors effectively therefore requires gender responsive research approach, educating the women through sensitization and training and government intervention by gender mainstreaming of agricultural policies to tackle issues relating to cassava processing in the cassava value chain

Key areas in educating the women processors include training on standards for cassava products and improved food safety practices, sensitization on industrial uses of cassava in order to encourage them to diversity their products to increase income generation and use of cassava waste in generating biogas to save processing cost.

How to boost productivity and efficiency of women in agriculture.

How to boost productivity and efficiency of women in agriculture. The role of women in agriculture cannot be undermined but their efficiency and productivity are bedeviled by various problems.

The role of women in agriculture is significant as they form a major percentage of producers found along the chain of production from farm to table. Women engage in tilling the soil, planting various crops and some are even processors.

Women in agriculture play a vital role in food security.Women form the crust of development of rural and national economies as they make up 47% of the world’s agricultural labor force, which in some countries are as high as 75%

How to boost productivity and efficiency of women in agriculture.

According to a study about 80% of the agricultural produce is from small farmers, that are basically rural women.

These Women comprise the largest percentage of the workforce in the agricultural sector of which – 75% are food producers , 10% of these women are processors while the 15% are left with marketing

To boost productivity and efficiency of women in agriculture, there must be a deliberate move to buy the produce off them, which can be achieved by any of these methods.

 1) A platform where an off- takers scheme is the motto.
2) education on advanced food processing, branding and marketing

Boosting  productivity and efficiency of women in agriculture can also be achieved if new innovative products are produced so that more market is created,an example is the innovative method of turning garri to snacks.

How to compound fish feed .

Fish feed could be natural ,using natural sources such ac insects, maggot, tadpoles, zoo plankton or plankton.Fish could also be fed a compounded ration, this could be home-made or finished feed. A combination of ingredients are used in stipulated amounts to boost growth. A combination of both natural and compounded ration can also be employed to save cost. FEED COMPOUNDING,Using fish meal, soya beans, groundnut cake, premix and binder. The ingredients are added as follows; fish meal...........50% soya beans...............24% groundnut cake............18% premix.................6% cornflour..............2%. The various ingredients are weighed out, grind ed and mixed thoroughly. These ingredients are mixed and held with use of binder(flour),the flour is mixed with water to form a paste, this is then added to the mixture and you continue to mix until a thick paste is formed. The mixture is dried in sun,and kept in air tight containers. The feed could be pelletized/granulated or fed as small lumps that break off when dropped in ponds. This will provide a good start for your fish at 12-28 days. Fish feed could also be made from fish meal, premix and raw egg as binder. The composition of the feed: fish meal ....92% premix ......8% and the raw egg as binder. All ingredients are mixed, the egg is mixed with water to form a paste, this then dried in the sun and kept in air tight containers. They can be presented as granular or fed as small lumps at pond corners. Unconventional feeding method is the use of grind-ed crayfish, which id grounded to fine particles, and mixed with fine chopped cassava flakes(garri). This is mixed with the crayfish to form a paste, this is then put in corners of the pond,to feed the fish.
