RABIES : WHAT CAN TRAVELERS DO TO PREVENT RABIES.

RABIES : WHAT CAN TRAVELERS DO TO PREVENT RABIES.
For some travelers, it may make sense to get the rabies vaccine before your trip. The rabies vaccine is three doses. The second dose is given seven days after the first dose. The third shot is given 21 to 28 days after the first dose.

Even if you are vaccinated against rabies, if you are bitten or scratched by an animal while traveling, you need to seek medical care immediately and get two booster doses of the vaccine.

Travelers can protect themselves from rabies by taking the following steps:
1)Don’t touch dogs, puppies, or other animals. This goes for strays as well as pets. Not all countries
require pets to be vaccinated against rabies. Even animals that appear healthy can spread rabies.

2)Supervise children closely, especially around dogs and puppies, cats and kittens, and wildlife.

3)If you travel with your pet, watch it closely. Do not allow it around other local pets or wild animals.

4)Avoid bringing new animals home. Dogs and cats may be infected with rabies but not show signs

until several days or months later. If you do decide to bring an animal with you be aware animal importation regulations.
5)If you are traveling to work with animals, bring and wear appropriate protective gear.

Act quickly if you are bitten or scratched by a dog or other animal :
1)Immediately wash all bites and scratches well. Use plenty of soap and running water.

2)Seek medical care immediately, even if you don’t feel sick or the wound does not look serious.

3)To prevent rabies, start treatment immediately.

4)Treatment for rabies includes getting a vaccine after you have been bitten.

Even if you were vaccinated before your trip, you still need to seek care if you get bitten or scratched by an animal.

I was bitten by a feral dog while overseas. My search for rabies shots was a terrifying ordeal.

I was bitten by a feral dog while overseas. My search for rabies shots was a terrifying ordeal. Sharing this story, though quite lengthy but very informative.

The take aways from the story: 1) Do not make assumptions about bites. 2) wash bite site with soap and water ,clean area with antiseptic solution then seek medical attention immediately.

I’d seen the gaunt canine milling around, but feral dogs seemed to congregate on every corner in India, so one more roaming the grounds of Amritsar’s Partition Museum didn’t garner any special attention. By the time I realized the dog was about to bite me, it was too late.

At least not until it sunk its incisors into my knee, leaving two bloody puncture marks. It could have been worse, but in a country where rabies kills thousands of people each year, it could have been so much better.

According to the World Health Organization, 36 percent of all rabies deaths occur in India. And while any mammal can transmit the rabies virus, 99 percent of all human cases result from contact with an infected dog. And travelers are not immune.

In 2018, a British man died after contracting rabies after being bitten by an asymptomatic cat in Morocco. This year, a 24-year-old Norwegian woman died after attempting to rescue a puppy in the Philippines that bit her. In 2017, a Virginia woman succumbed to rabies after a dog bite in India. She rescued a puppy during her vacation.

The dog’s bite proved deadly. Instinctively, after being bitten, I slathered my knee in hand sanitizer as locals in the northwestern India city directed my partner and me to a small lean-to with a faded red cross painted on it.

RABIES: a neglected disease that perpetuates poverty.

RABIES: a neglected disease that perpetuates poverty.

Rabies is recognized as one of 20 Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) by the World Health Organization.
Although rabies is found on every continent, except Antarctica and some islands, it is well controlled or even eliminated in most developed countries. Today over 95% of human victims are from Africa and Asia, most from marginalized and impoverished rural communities.

Rabies is a preventable disease that overwhelmingly afflicts the poor, both in terms of its death toll and the associated financial burden. Annual economic losses because of the disease are around 8.6 billion US dollars, mostly due to premature deaths, but also because of spending on human vaccines, lost income for victims of animal bites, and other costs.

With a survival rate of less than 0.1%, those exposed to the virus face a stark choice: go in search of a series of vaccines and immunoglobulin that prevent the onset of the disease (post-exposure prophylaxis, PEP) or die. In some cases, PEP costs more than the monthly household income, and families are known to either go into debt to pay for PEP, or sell livestock on which they depend for income; both are options that negatively affect families’ future prospects. Rabies can destroy families literally (through death), emotionally, and financially – making it a truly horrific disease.

Gamifying rabies.

Did you know that rabies kills one person every 9 minutes?
Did you know that 59,000 people die of rabies worldwide every year?
Did you know that almost half of the victims are children under 15 years of age?
Did you know that vaccinating 70% of dog population in an area breaks the dog-human cycle of rabies, thus eliminating rabies in such areas?
Did you know that vaccination of your dogs, cats and monkeys is a sure way to eliminate rabies?
Did you know that the fastest way to change a paradigm or introduce a concept that targets kids is by gamifying the concept or creating songs that are interactive?
Did you also know that creating awareness on public health issues can also be accomplished by creating stories, posters, coloring books for kids e.t.c?
Did you also know that when a kid learns something or comes across a story, the story spreads fast?
Did you know that when you tell one kid a truth all the other kids in the community hears this truth?
Did you also know that creating public awareness about diseases of public health importance is a collective responsibility?
Did you know that change is a collective effort? so play your part:by vaccinating your pets. Sharing the rabies game board in your network. Ensuring your neighbors are responsible pet owners that vaccinate their pets.

Lets start now: kick rabies out of #Lagos. #Nigeria  #endrabiesnow

Mission rabies : surveillance is a key strategy for zero by 30

Surveillance is a key part of our work to protect at-risk communities now, and in the future. This means manning 24-hour emergency hotlines, deploying rabies response teams, and setting up what we call Integrated Bite Case Management (IBCM).

This is an intensive surveillance technique whereby our officers actively seek out cases where a human has been bitten by a dog. Instead of waiting for people to report dogs showing signs of rabies, the officers screen cases in hospitals to find the ones most likely to be from rabid animals.

In one month alone, Lyson one of our IBCM officers in Malawi, investigated 12 cases across three districts, seven of which turned out to be rabid animals. One case, in particular, will stay in Lyson's mind for a long time and highlights the direct impact made by our IBCM work.

Lyson was called out to investigate the case of an aggressive dog which had been killed. The postmortem test result confirmed the suspicion that the animal was in fact rabid. While doing contact tracing, Lyson came across a lady who got bitten on her leg and hand by this dog the previous day. Unaware of the risk of rabies or the need for post-exposure vaccinations, she had not sought treatment. After Lyson clearly explained the deadly risks and how she could protect herself, the woman went to the district hospital to receive all five vaccinations.

Two months later, Lyson visited the woman and found her in good health. She was very grateful for the advice she received that day and is aware that this information very likely saved her life. She also promised that she will spread the word about Mission Rabies and our key messages in her village, especially to children, so they all know the crucial steps to take if they are bitten by a dog.

How do HPAI outbreaks occur?

How do HPAI outbreaks occur? Usually with some type of contact with other birds.

               Common biosecurity failures.

“People had some contact, whether wild birds and droppings, feathers or debris, or contact with backyard birds,” Rings explained. “Or it could be a lateral spread within a company where someone was not following procedures.

Sometimes it isn’t direct, but accidental or indirect contact with birds or their products.” Then people fail to follow biosecurity procedures including the line of separation to divide the production side of a commercial poultry flock from the outside world. “It’s using dedicated farm clothing or footwear,” he continued.

“Disposable coveralls and plastic boots are a form of dedicated clothing. It’s having inside and outside boots and using those exclusively in each location. “It can be improper house entry procedures like not doing a boot change; not using a proper foot bath, which may be dirty or empty; and not using hand sanitizer and equipment sanitation,”

Rings said. Keeping HPAI out of a flock also includes monitoring visitors and service people, and making sure everyone follows biosecurity protocols. In the end, biosecurity is everyone’s job. “Every person has a place at the table,” he added. “But growers are the ultimate guardians of their farm. They are on duty 24/7…to prevent and block any disease coming on their farm that would devastate their flock and livelihood.”

HPAI prevention requires ‘buckle-up’ mentality to biosecurity.

HPAI prevention requires ‘buckle-up’ mentality to biosecurity.  The only option for poultry farms to prevent an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is 100% adherence to biosecurity rules.

“You can be doing 99% of [biosecurity] correctly and somebody does one thing wrong and brings the disease into the farm,” reported Bret Rings, DVM, Cobb-Vantress. “Think of biosecurity as a chain — it is only as strong as the weakest link.”

Strengthening biosecurity requires building a culture that makes following protocols second nature for everyone on the farm. “It’s like a seat belt; it is protection that you use and do all the time because you never know when you will need it,” Rings said. “You never know when you will be exposed to HPAI and you need to protect your flock.”

                Build a biosecurity culture.

A biosecurity culture must be built into how producers do business every day, Rings explained, during a recent HPAI risk webinar hosted by the University of Arkansas. He recommended using communications and training to help transfer the importance of biosecurity to growers and farm staff: Communications – Biosecurity protocols must be communicated to everyone on the farm, from the grower to hourly employees.

The protocols should be clear, simple and based on scientific data. It’s important for everyone to understand protocols are to be followed consistently and with no exceptions. “You need to find creative ways to share that information, whether by a personal conversation, a one-page document, poster or meeting where you discuss the importance of biosecurity in today’s environment with HPAI taking place,” he said.

Training, training, training — In addition, regular training helps build the culture while reinforcing the correct way to follow biosecurity protocols. Rings suggested using small meetings or get-together with farm staff for the training.

The training also shows staff that biosecurity is a priority. “It comes down to some persuasion and motivation,” he added. “Emphasize to farm workers that biosecurity is of utmost importance. The threat is real; it can happen to anyone, and it does.

The rise of Avian Influenza.

So far, 2022 has been a deadly year for the world’s birds. Avian influenza continues to rise, and this is hot on the heels of two years that the U.S. CDC says saw more outbreaks than the previous four years combined. Each outbreak of avian influenza can have huge ramifications for animal and human welfare. And, of course, a devastating impact on the economy and global food security.

Just a single outbreak in the Netherlands in 2003 cost an estimated 150 million euros and the culling of some 30 million birds. Right now, other countries – like the UK – are facing similar losses. A look at the current spread of avian influenza and the evolving discussion on vaccination.

Biosecurity and hygiene is currently the first line of defense against avian influenza in most countries. While this can limit exposure, this is not fool proof as outbreaks grow in size and scope each year. The U.S. CDC has reported that globally “there were more outbreaks reported in 2020-2021 than in the previous four years combined.” What’s more, viruses are cropping up in countries that have been clear of avian influenza for many years – like Canada.

The CDC reports that, in December 2021, HPAI A (H5N1) viruses were detected in birds in Newfoundland. This is the first identification of this virus in the Americas since June 2015. Vaccines have been considered as a potential control measure against avian influenza, but these are often not widely available or used in many markets. There has been some recent discussion about re-evaluating vaccination though.

According to Julien Denormandie the French agriculture minister,There is “no other solution in the long term than to have vaccination.”  Vaccines are often not used due to concerns about trade disruptions.

In the past, export bans have been enforced on countries with vaccination policies. This is due to concerns such as not being able to differentiate vaccinated animals from infected animals, which occurs if a vaccine is not a 'DIVA vaccine'. DIVA vaccines and diagnostics :DIVA stands for Differentiating Infected from Vaccinated Animals. For Avian influenza, this can be achieved by using a vaccine based on a different strain (e.g. H5N2) than the current field strain (e.g. H5N1) and using a serological test that can differentiate between vaccine-induced antibodies (e.g. against N2) and antibodies against the field virus (N1).

Current thoughts on whether there may be scope for vaccination in the future:

The loss of millions of birds is a significant welfare issue that requires considering all avenues of prevention.

The Poultry Veterinary Study Group of the EU published a paper in October calling for an ‘open-minded evaluation’ of vaccines, saying it would ‘offer better protection to poultry'.

The French minister of agriculture sees vaccination as a long-term, viable solution in the face of rising losses. Though it may be too late to mitigate the impact of the current outbreaks, vaccination could become a future prevention measure alongside alongside biosecurity and other tools

The info graphic below shows the impact of Avian Influenza in 2021.

Avian Influenza: Effective Biosecurity is Critical to Prevention.

Avian Influenza: Effective Biosecurity is Critical to Prevention.Avian influenza (AI) is a very important infectious disease of both poultry and other birds caused by influenza type A viruses. Although multiple viral strains exist, the disease appears in two forms, highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) and low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI).

The distinction between pathogenicity of a particular avian influenza virus is based upon its potential to result in severe disease in poultry and the presence of specific genetic attributes that contribute to this virulence.

In both poultry and wild birds, LPAI may present either sub clinically or as mild respiratory disease. This form of the disease in poultry might be observed as sneezing, coughing, and nasal or ocular discharge with a negative impact on productivity despite mortality remaining low.

As a natural reservoir for avian influenza, wild birds in many cases may not exhibit any clinical signs, even in the event of HPAI infection. Poultry may experience mortality rates approaching 100% during a HPAI outbreak and exhibit clinical signs such as lethargy, severe respiratory distress leading to cyanosis, edema and hemorrhage in tissues of the head, legs, internal organs, muscles, neurologic deficits, and diarrhea.

Avian influenza viruses have a predilection for the intestinal and respiratory tracts of the bird, therefore oropharyngeal and cloacal swabs are common diagnostic samples submitted to detect this pathogen.Get the guide.

Russians destroy US$8.5 million worth of MHP poultry.

A warehouse rented by Ukrainian poultry company MHP was destroyed by a fire caused by shelling from Russian forces, causing the company to lose about US$8.5 million worth of poultry products.

According to a press release published on the London Stock Exchange website, a fire broke out at the warehouse in Kvitneve, Ukraine, due to shelling by the occupying forces on March 12.

Frozen chicken products from MHP were in the warehouse, which is the largest cold storage facility in Ukraine. The press release stated that no warehouse workers were injured.

According to the release, this is not the first food warehouse in the Kyiv and surrounding Ukrainian regions be destroyed by the Russian occupiers in recent days. In addition, the Russian forces are further jeopardizing food security in Ukraine by disrupting logistical operations.

Presently, around 8,500 metric tons of poultry, which has a potential financial impact of more than US$ 20 million, is at risk where MHP has a limited access to the warehouses in the southern regions of Ukraine and in the Kyiv region, primarily due to destroyed infrastructure supporting roads and railways. MHP stated that it continues to focus on the care and wellbeing of the people of Ukraine.

Currently, MHP has a key responsibility in the food security of the country and it continues its operations despite substantial difficulties in supply chain and logistics. MHP said it fully understands how important poultry production is for Ukraine and its population at such difficult times.

UK researchers: Watch for emerging, more infectious strains of avian flu virus.

Poultry producers worldwide should be on the alert for emerging strains of avian influenza virus that are either more transmissible or cause more severe disease than prior strains.

According to researchers led by The Pirbright Institute in the UK, infection with two strains of avian flu also could lead to the emergence of a new virus strain with the potential to jump from birds to humans.

One study, published in the Journal of Virology, was conducted after a low-pathogenic H7N9 strain of avian influenza virus emerged in 2013 through genetic reassortment between an H9N2 strain and other low-pathogenic strains.

The new H7N9 strain caused inapparent clinical disease in chickens, but zoonotic transmission caused severe and fatal disease in humans.

Pirbright researchers looked at a natural reassortment scenario between H7N9 and a G1-lineage H9N2 virus predominant in India and across the Middle East.

 Shared genetic information.

According to Pirbright researchers, the study shows that avian influenza virus strains H9N2 and H7N9 can share genetic information to create an H9N9 strain with the potential to cause more severe disease in poultry and pose a threat to human health.

Lockdown mode urged with avian flu outbreaks in Mississippi and Central Flyways.

A warning to tighten up biosecurity and reduce movement in and out of poultry houses was issued by Terry Conger, DVM, poultry health epidemiologist with USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). The warning came as outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) occurred along the Mississippi Flyway for migratory waterfowl. Earlier HPAI outbreaks were reported along the Atlantic Flyway, which can mingle with the Mississippi Flyway.

Outbreaks in both areas involved commercial and non-commercial poultry operations. And recently, outbreaks were reported in the Central and Pacific flyways. “Migratory waterfowl and other wild birds play a major role in introducing the [HPAI] infection into flocks, and once in a facility, it can spread like wildfire through the movement of fomites,” Conger said.

He spoke during a recent University of Arkansas Ag Research and Extension webinar on HPAI.

     H5N1 strain involved.

The latest HPAI outbreaks in the US are caused by the serotype H5N1, known as the Eurasia strain. Conger said H5N1 is an ongoing, rapidly spreading strain that has been prominent in Europe, Asia and Africa.

The first HPAI H5N1 outbreak in the Western Hemisphere occurred Dec. 23, 2021, in Newfoundland and has continued to spread into the US. “Due to the perpetual risk of HPAI from waterfowl, the only preventive tool we can rest our hopes on is stringent biosecurity,” Conger said. “Contract growers and non-commercial flock owners must buy into biosecurity to protect their individual flocks because HPAI is here,” he added.

“Biosecurity must become a part of life if you oversee a commercial or backyard flock. It must be as automatic as eating and sleeping.”

 Biosecurity breakdowns.

. While migratory waterfowl are the most common initial source of HPAI infection, human error is also responsible for spreading it into flocks through breakdowns in biosecurity. “Infection can occur by the movement of contaminated equipment, vehicles, service personnel, visitors and pests including rodents and insects,”

Conger said. “Less common are domestic pigs and pet birds. “Once the virus is in a facility, it can move very quickly on shared equipment and contaminated clothing,” he said. “This is how it exploded in Minnesota and Iowa in 2015.” Personnel in commercial flocks who take steps to tighten up biosecurity are more likely to keep the virus out.

Kenya Women Veterinary Association To Conduct Population Control For Cats, Dogs.

Kenya Women Veterinary Association To Conduct Population Control For Cats, Dogs.A delegation from the Kenya Women Veterinary Association (KWVA) led by Chairperson Dr Marilyn Karani is in Turkana County for a cats and dogs’ population control exercise as part of zoonosis disease control activity in Kakuma.

The activity will take place from Thursday, March 17, to Saturday, March 19, 2022 and it will include surgical population control of dogs and cats through neutering and spraying as well as vaccination of dogs and donkeys.

Speaking during a courtesy call on Deputy Governor Peter Lotethiro in Lodwar, Dr Karani said Turkana West had been targeted due to statistics showing prevalence of zoonotic diseases in the Sub-County.

She urged the County Government to continuously train experts in the field to increase the number of skilled human resources which was critical for sustainability of the programme.

She was accompanied by KWVA Committee Member, Dr Ruphline Margaret. The team is in the County which kicks off a five-year partnership campaign to eradicate rabies and hydatid diseases in the County.

Model predicts cross-species contamination risk for farm animals.

A new mathematical model from US researchers reveals the high risk of cross-species disease spread on farms with more than one type of animal. According to the model developed by a team at North Carolina State University—and described in Veterinary Research—biosecurity efforts focused on the top three per cent of farms in a particular contact network may significantly cut back cross-species disease dissemination.

“Most disease-prevention programs focus control and prevention measures on one species; however, it is well known that cross-species transmissions occur,” A/Prof Gustavo Machado said. “For example, foot-and-mouth disease can be transmitted among all ungulate species. And all of these farms are connected—they sell and share animals all the time.”

The researchers created a stochastic mathematical model that described the ‘connectedness’ of farms in one area of Southern Brazil.

The model included three years’ worth of data for a population of 90 million animals and traced over 1.6 million animal movements between farms, such as animal sales and grow-finishing movements.

The model simulated disease outbreaks that began in cattle, pigs, and small ruminants (i.e., sheep or goats), respectively, in order to determine the likelihood of cross-species contamination in each case. They ran 1000 distinct simulations 100 times each to identify, continue

China reports another human case of H5N6 bird flu.

Another person in mainland China has fallen seriously ill after testing positive for H5N6 bird flu, raising the number of cases so far this year to 17, officials say. The spike in human cases has led to calls for increased surveillance.

The latest case is a 51-year-old woman from Nanchang in Jiangxi province who developed symptoms on February 20 after exposure to live domestic poultry, according to the Hong Kong Health Department. She was hospitalized 3 days later and remains in critical condition. Other details about the case were not released by the Chinese government, which often takes a long time to announce new cases.

Last week, China reported that a 12-year-old girl and a 79-year-old man died of H5N6 bird flu in early December. Both lived in Liuzhou in the Guangxi region and visited a live poultry market before falling ill. It’s unknown why it took 3.5 months to report the cases.

Only 76 people have been infected with H5N6 bird flu since the first confirmed case in 2014, but the vast majority of cases were diagnosed during the past year. At least 17 cases, including five deaths, have been reported so far this year.

Food security: how the Ukraine and Russian war affects you.

Food security means having, at all times, both physical and economic access to sufficient food to meet dietary needs for a productive and healthy life. A family is food secure when its members do not live in hunger or fear of hunger. According to reports there are 4.5 million food insecure people in Nigeria with the highest number in Lagos. Food insecurity is rooted in poverty with long-term impacts on the ability of families, communities and countries to develop and prosper.

The scenario above was the status quo before the Ukraine-Russian war,now with all the sanctions, bans and restrictions on Russia things are going to be tough. According to Mr Aliko Dangote there is a forecast of food scarcity in the next four months.

All Countries with very close economic links with Ukraine and Russia are at particular risk of scarcity and supply disruptions and are most affected by the increasing inflows of refugees.

According to reports that Russia is among Nigeria’s top 10 import trade partners between the third quarter of 2020 and the corresponding period in 2021, with a total import trade value of N993.38bn. Russia supplies the majority of wheat imported to Nigeria, meaning wheat and wheat products will skyrocket and become more inaccessible to majority.

How the Ukraine-Russian war affects you?

Wheat is one of the products Nigeria import from Russia.Wheat is typically milled into flour which is then used to make a wide range of foods including bread, noodles, pasta, biscuits, cakes, pastries, cereal ,bars, sweet and savory snack foods, confectionery and in animal feed.

This means not only will food prices go up,animal feed costs will rise. This war can actually be the time to look inwards and promote alternatives to wheat such as CASSAVA.

CASSAVA OUR SUPER FOOD TO THE RESCUE. This is the time to scale up production of cassava as well as promote the processing to GARRI to produce food and confectionery.

Did you know you could make pasta, noodles, bread and feed from cassava?
Did you know you could turn garri to bread
Did you know that promoting the processing of cassava to garri you will empower families especially women.
Did you know that by promoting the garri business/initiatives more children can be fed healthy meals? The time to shift is here now, Cassava------garri-= empowerment =foodsecurity==forex generation by exporting the Nigerian garri.

Garri initiatives : Osun State government distributes garri to 30,000 vulnerable.

Osun State government distributes garri to 30,000 vulnerable.

The Osun State Government has distributed garri to another 30,000 vulnerable in the 11th edition of the food support scheme, saying the initiative was to encourage and boost local production.

The young entrepreneurs who have been contracted to make the supply, however, lauded the initiatives, describing it as the best way to encourage local producers. Addressing journalists during the flag-off of the scheme at the open field of the Local Government Service Commission, Government Secretariat, Abere, Osogbo.

One of the local entrepreneurs who supplied the garri to the government, Raji Adekunle, hailed the government for its determination to harness and explore the potential embedded in the youths for the growth and development of the state.
Learn how to start a lucrative garri business

Adekunle said the inclusion of his venture in the list of those that supplied garri to the government has helped to expand the scope of his business for the maximum capacity.

HOW TO PACKAGE GARRI FOR EXPORT.

Nigeria is the largest producer of cassava and 70% of cassava produced is processed into garri.  There is a common slogan that no matter the amount of garri you produce, there is always a market with customers ready to pay.

Garri business is not limited to local markets as in Nigeria, but there is an opportunity in the international market for properly packaged garri.

Flow chart of garri marketing from farm to store/export.( Ojuri,H.B 2021)

How do you start this lucrative business? the level you want to participate depends on your target market. The fastest entry level to tap into this business is to selling of the garri, not starting from the processing.

How to start the lucrative garri business with just 25,000 naira.

1) Source the garri from local markets where the processors sell to  other merchants /traders and middle men that bring to the city.

2) Buy the desired quantity if you cant afford a bag.

3) Bring the garri back to the city and sell in markets or stalls.

The price of the 50 kg bag of  the white garri in clusters/ local markets...........13,000 naira

The price of the paint bucket is.....................650 naira.

There are 20 paint buckets in a 50 kg bag. If the merchant goes with a private car, transportation cost is negligible as compared to public transport where the merchants will pay the fare for the journey and also pay for the garri.

The current price of garri now is 17,000 naira per 50 kg bag and the paint is 850 naira.

 Profit analysis:

A bag from the farm is 13000 naira.

lets assume the transport is public and the cost is 2,500 naira from market to merchants destination.

Cost of the garri ==13000 + 2500=15,500 naira.

Profit on a bag=17,000 - 15500=  1,500 naira.

This is the first level of profit. The  merchant can profit on another level depending on how sales are made.

Customers can buy in cups, mudus or paint rubber, the merchants profits at this level.

 One mudus =8 cups

A paint rubber contains 3 mudus.

A cup is 100 naira meaning one mudus= 800 naira.

This means by selling in mudus the merchants will make 800*3= 2,400 naira for paint instead of  850 naira. This gives credence to the slogan " retail business is big business".

The new gold= garri business. This is just an insight, see what garri can become.
