Veterinary medicine: Strangles outbreak kills 4000 donkeys in Niger.

Veterinary medicine: Strangles outbreak kills 4000 donkeys in Niger. An outbreak of strangles has claimed the lives of more than 4000 donkeys in the west African country of Niger since early December. Officials say that more than 8000 donkeys were affected by the contagious bacterial infection, which is also known as equine distemper, and more than half succumbed since the infection appeared in the first 10 days of December in the north of the country in Agadez, Niger’s gateway to the Sahara. Official statistics show Niger has a population of more than 1.5 million donkeys. The Ingall area was the worst affected, and the government’s minister for pastoral issues, Mohamed Boucha, visited Agadez this week to assess the impact of the outbreak.Veterinary officials said the strangles risk was heightened as the treatment of a sick animal can take several weeks, and the infection can be transferred between equines and through the pasture itself. Herders in the area have been invited to have their donkeys immunised for free by government veterinary services.

BLIND DOG NAMED CHRISTMAS RESCUED AFTER BEING TRAPPED IN WELL .

According to ABC eye witness reports; a blind, elderly dog named Christmas has been rescued after months of living alone in a well, -- and his rescue was captured in a touching video, ABC News reports. (http://abc11.com/pets/blind-dog-named-christmas-rescued-after-being-trapped-in-well-for-months/1131401/) "Surprisingly, the dog is in fairly good, psychical condition," said Laura Simpson, founder of the Harmony Fund in Holden, Massachusetts. "The blindness of course is from a pre-existing condition, but he's now in foster care and we're hoping he can find a home there he's loved and respected in the way he should be." Simpson told ABC News that it was last week when international animal rescuer Fahrudin Caki Bravo and his friend Ratko Koblar received word of a dog trapped in a well in nearby Bosnia."The dog had been there for months and they don't know if he was thrown in, or if he fell in," Simpson said. "We're certainly hoping that he fell, but with the dog being completely blind, he was only kept alive because the local children were kind enough to feed him.""He (Bravo) and his friend thought it was perfectly feasible getting the dog out and they did a great job," she added. "They made it look easy." Following his rescue, , Christmas received veterinary care and was placed in foster care.

VETERINARY MEDICINE: YOU AND YOUR DOG AT CHRISTMAS.

VETERINARY MEDICINE: YOU AND YOUR DOG AT CHRISTMAS. This is the season of abundant treats, for you and your pet. A season of more than enough with overflow in your freezers, fridges, coolers and stores just for you and your pet. This is the season you take all limits off and give whatever ,whenever and however to your pets just to make them happy.

This is the time you try new recipes and strange cooking methods are unearthed @ this period; some you can stomach, others end up in your pet’s bowl during the holidays landing him in the emergency ward of the veterinary clinic. The cases of sick dogs with diarrhea and vomiting as major signs increase during the holidays.

VETERINARY MEDICINE: YOU AND YOUR DOG AT CHRISTMAS This season there is so much food around; leftovers from parties, shows, eateries are literally tossed to pet owners, who gladly collect and dump in their freezers.
The food on its own may have been prepared with all food safety handling methods observed, BUT,BUUUUUUUUTT the problem starts with how the left over’s are handled, stored and processed.

The leftover’s are from different sources ,using different ingredients such as jollof rice, fried rice, coconut rice, curry rice, with beef, chicken, fish, entrails e.t.c. Everything is mixed together, put in a goo-die bag and bam in the freezer.
The goo-die bag is brought out to thaw; the required portion is taken out, processed and given to your dog. The same process is repeated at another meal time, and your pet enjoys the meal everybody goes to bed happy. The next day your pet is going to wake up sick with vomiting and diarrhea and he will need care to prevent a fatal incidence.

VETERINARY MEDICINE: How to wash your dog.

VETERINARY MEDICINE: How to wash your dog. The quality and texture of the dog’s hair will determine how much dirt it collects and how frequently the dog should be bathed. Your dog’s lifestyle and activities will also influence how often she gets dirty and needs a bath. If you own a dog with special coat requirements, consult a breeder or a professional groomer for specific recommendations. The usual reasons for bathing a dog are to remove accumulated dirt and debris, to ensure the removal of dead hair at shedding time, to eliminate doggy odor in dogs with oily coats, and to improve the appearance of the coat. Routine bathing is not necessary for the health of the coat or the dog. In fact, frequent bathing can rob the coat of its natural sheen and make it harsh and dry. For most dogs, regular brushing will keep the coat in good condition and eliminate the need for frequent baths. HOW TO WASH YOUR DOG. Before bathing a dog, brush out all snarls and tangles and remove mats. If this step is omitted, the wet, matted hair will set and be most difficult to manage. It is important to select a shampoo labeled “for dogs.” Most shampoos for humans are on the acid side and are therefore unsuitable for dogs. There are a number of good commercial dog shampoos on the market for dogs such as B OLIVE SHAMPOO.. Household disinfectants must never be used on dogs. These chemicals are absorbed through the skin and can cause death. Baths should be given using a bathtub or basin. Place a rubber mat on the bottom of the tub or basin to keep the dog from slipping. Plug her ears with cotton to keep water out-wet ear canals are predisposed to infection. Add some lukewarm water to the bath tub place the dog in the tub. Begin by washing her face with a damp cloth. Lift up the ear flaps and wipe the under surface to remove dirt, wax, and dead skin. Using a bath sprayer, wet the dog thoroughly with warm water. Then work the shampoo in by hand, one section at a time. Be sure to lather all of the dog-not only her back and sides, but also her neck, chest, belly, legs, feet, and tail. If the coat is badly soiled, rinse lightly , apply shampoo again and was thoroughly ,then rinse and towel dry your pooch.
