Yeast Can Now Produce THC, Marijuana’s Infamous Compound, cannabidiol .
Yeast, the sugar-gobbling microorganism that’s filled our bellies with beer and bread for millennia, has a new, increasingly important, role to play in society: serving as a therapeutic drug factory.
In August, scientists announced they had genetically engineered yeast to produce the painkiller hydrocodone, and even before that breakthrough, modified yeast churned out the anti-malarial drug artemisinin. Now, scientists have customized yeast to create THC (the marijuana chemical that produces a “high”) and cannabidiol
Biochemists from the Technical University in Dortmund, Germany, created a genetically-engineered yeast strain to produce very small amounts of THC or cannabidiol. Unlike normal yeast, however, these custom yeast have to be fed cannabigerolic acid, which is a precursor molecule to THC and cannabidiol.
Using a molecular precursor as a starting point is a bit like reading a book from the middle chapters to its conclusion. Ideally, the entire process would start with simple sugars — or chapter 1 — rather than precursors to complete the entire chemical pathway that the marijuana plant does naturally. However, scientists believe they’ll get to that point and scale up production for industrial use in the near future, the New York Times reports.
The team published its work with the yeast strain that produces THC in the journal Biotechnology Letters. They also created a separate strain that produces cannabidiol, but those data are yet to be published.
Marijuana is chock full of molecular compounds that are fascinating to scientists. Synthetic THC is already available in pill form and it is used to ease nausea in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, or stimulate the appetites of people with H.I.V. or other infections. Cannabidiol, a compound that is not psychoactive, has shown potential to reduce the frequency of seizures in epileptic individuals.
Yeast factories could help scale up production of these chemicals not just for therapy, but for research too. Producing marijuana’s constituent compounds in vast quantities would give researchers a supply of marijuana’s myriad chemicals to better understand how, or if, they work as advertised.
Still, at the moment, the plant is far more efficient than the yeast — modern marijuana strains can contain more than 30 percent THC by dry weight. So there’s still a long way to go before THC-producing yeast change the landscape of cannabis research. Researchers will likely need to splice many more genes into species of yeast to complete the entire chemical reaction in a single strain. But at the rate that genetically-modified yeast research is advancing, it may not be a long wait.

3D-printing dentists are recreating entire jaws.
3D-printing has been used for basic dental procedures for years – and the technology is now advanced enough to reconstruct entire jaws. Andrew Dawood, a dentist with Dawood and Tanner, told the audience at WIRED Health that they have used the lost wax technique which has been around 5,000 years, but 3D-printing has allowed him to do more with patients and do it faster.
Dawood explained that he was able to design and print the frameowrk, cutting guides and parts needed to perform complex dental surgery. He said all it required was data collected from 3D scans and patient records. Plaster of Paris parts used for surgery are now 3D-printed and Dawood also uses plastics, rubbers, and metals while printing. He said they are not 3D-printing bone yet,but will one day.
A technique to make and 3D-printed human bone hasn't been developed yet, but Dawood and other surgeons are already using bone from other parts of the body to reconstruct entire jaws in the most complex cases.
Josh Stephenson, a designer and one of Dawood's patients, had his jaw reconstructed after suffering from a malignant melanoma. After unsuccessful radiotherapy treatment, Stephenson underwent surgery to remove his left eye, upper left jaw and the roof of his mouth. Using a 3D-scanned and printed copy of Stephenson's skull it was possible to recreate the missing parts of his jaw.
Stephenson, who is a graphic designer, has since used the same 3D-scanning and printing technique to create new products. Dawood was able to asses the dentistry work needed from the 3D-printed model and then say how surgery to repair it should be carried out.
Using "bone taken from [Stephenson's] scapular" the dentist and other surgeons reconstructed his jaw. Using this type of technology, there can be more accurate intervention and quick return of patient to society .

DRUG RESIDUE IN PIGS AND CANCER IN MAN.

The drug, carbadox, is made by Teaneck, New Jersey-based Phibro Animal Health and is used to control swine dysentery and bacterial enteritis.
The drug, which was approved in 1972, has also been used to promote weight gain in pigs.
Potential cancer risks are based on an assumed lifetime of consuming pork liver or other pork products containing carbadox residues the product is sold under the brand name Mecadox.
Pork is a good source of protein ,but protein can also be found in other meat, poultry, seafood, beans and peas, eggs, processed soy products, nuts and seeds. Pork liver is used to make liverwurst, hot dogs, lunch meat and some types of sausage, the agency said.
Mecadox has been approved and sold in the United States for more than 40 years and is a widely-used treatment for controlling bacterial diseases. The FDA said it asked Phibro for additional information about the safety of carbadox, but the company has not submitted any proof that there is a safe way to use it
The FDA’s actions follow a preliminary risk assessment conducted from 2012 to 2014 which found that the lifetime cancer risk from consuming pork liver containing carbadox residue is higher than allowed under the FDA’s framework for regulating carcinogenic animal drugs.
Pork producers have become more interested in carbadox recently because it does not require a veterinarian’s prescription, according to John Goihl, president of Agri-Nutrition Services Inc, a Minnesota-based firm that provides feed formulations and consulting services to manufacturers and livestock producers.
Three antibiotics made by Phibro contain carbadox: Mecadox Premix 10, Banminth/Mecadox; and Mecadox/Terramycin, the FDA said.

DOCTORS USE GENETICALLY MODIFIED ADENO VIRUS TO ATTACK TUMOR CELLS.
Researchers in Argentina say they have genetically modified an adenovirus – which can cause colds, conjunctivitis and bronchitis – to home in on cancer, killing tumor cells in patients without harming healthy tissue. Scientific journal Nature reported in October last year that cancer-fighting viruses had started to win approval.
Dr. Osvaldo Podhjacer, Chief of the Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Therapy at the Fundacion Instituto Leloir in Buenos Aires, and his team developed an ‘oncolytic’ virus designed to target both malignant cells and tumor-associated stromal cells.
This is a virus, which, by genetic modification, we have restricted their infectivity exclusively to malignant cells. In spite of the fact that originally, the virus can infect normal cells and cause colds, conjunctivitis and bronchitis.
There is need for immunotherapy, because in addition to the changes made to restrict the infection only to malignant cells, it also has a gene that exacerbates the immune response. Then there is a direct attack on the tumor initial and an additional immunological response which in principle eliminates the residual tumor, which was not eliminated by the virus and disseminated metastases.
“These viruses are very effective in pre-clinical models of cancer, we have tested and in particular, ovarian cancer and melanoma but we also have other viruses for pancreatic and colon rectal cancer. These are non-toxic and they are as important as their therapeutic efficacy, where we have managed to reverse the levels of liver enzymes to a normal level with animals that have a tumor.
These levels become very high due to the toxicity. In general terms, it allows us to qualify this virus as an ideal candidate to be taken to a clinical trial in humans beings,

BIOTEMPUS AND CANCER TREATMENT IN DOGS.
Melbourne based biotechnology company Biotempus has made a remarkable discovery: cancer patients’ [both canine and human] immune systems run on a cycle and thus delivering treatment at the wrong times could be reducing the efficacy. Dr Noam Pik, the general manager at ASAP Laboratory, explained they hypothesised that a seven-day cycle was the key to the efficacy of treatment by building on previous medical research.
“This discovery was made by Martin Ashdown while investigating AIDS with mice after noticing some responded better to the same treatment at different times post inoculation,” said Dr Pik. “This lead to the hypothesis that the immune system operates differently in the time domain. That is, at certain times it is more effective at eliminating disease.”

CANINE CANCER TRIALS AND CANCER TREATMENT IN MAN.
MELBOURNE scientists say a new canine cancer trial has produced exciting results that could lead to a breakthrough in human treatment.Dr Noam Pik, head of the veterinary division at West Melbourne biotechnology research group Biotempus, is leading the free clinical trial and said early results were mind-blowing
The 12-month trial, which is being conducted at 20 veterinary clinics around Australia, was launched in December and according to Dr Pik, several dogs had already shown signs of remission. Dr Pik said dogs were given a single dose of chemotherapy — a tablet — that did not target the tumour, but attacked (T-Regulatory) cells within the patient’s own immune system. If this trial proves effective, they plan to offer this service to canine patients within 24 months and then continue to humans.
These cells suppressed the natural cancer-fighting mechanism of other (T-Effector) cells in the immune system ,if the T-Regulatory cells can be selectively killed, the T-Effector cells can get on with the job of eliminating cancer undisturbed.
This method has been researched before but Dr Pik’s team has discovered a way to predict when the suppressor cells are most vulnerable — the optimum time to administer the chemo and kill the cells. The team discovered the immune system moves in cycles and can be mapped. Dogs are required to give blood samples every second day for up to three weeks, so experts can track their immune cycle and identify the best time to administer the drug.
The last decade of research has shown considerable progress in the field of immunotherapy — using the patients’ own immune system to fight the cancer. The contribution of the tumor micro-environment is immense and has been previously largely underestimated. Thus, we believe it is important to aim treatment at both the tumor itself and the tumor environment with the aim of achieving more effective and durable cancer treatments.
The chemo tablets cost less than $5, the treatment could potentially slash the cost of canine cancer treatment. The low-dose tablet is strong enough to correct the immune imbalance without the harsh side effects usually associated with chemo, such as nausea.

BLOODY STOOL IN DOGS.
The Presence of bright red blood in feces of dogs is common with dogs with bleeding in the lumen of intestine. The common cause in older dogs is usually cancer ,while younger dogs parasites are the usual cause. The color of the blood will give an indication of where the problem is,if the feces is dark and tarry then its digested blood indicating the problem is in the small intestine and stomach, while if the blood is frank and bright red the problem lies in the colon/rectum.
The diagnosis involves more than the color of the feces, the history and other signs in the dog will help draw a logical conclusion. The common causes of bloody stool include infectious agents such as bacteria, protozoa, viruses and intestinal parasites. Dietary intolerance, allergy, colitis, bowel disorders , constipation and clotting disorders are also likely causes of blood in stool.
Treatment will depend on underlying cause such as 1) antibiotics.
2)deworming medication.
3)adsorbent to coat lumen.
4)changes in diet.
5) provision of plenty water.

Pigeons can identify cancerous tissue on x-rays.
A new study shows that pigeons can distinguish between healthy and cancerous tissue in x-rays and microscope slides with an accuracy rate of up to 99%.In a series of three experiments, led by Richard Levenson, professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of California Davis Medical Center, it was found that pigeons have the capacity to learn how to identify whether an image shows healthy or cancerous breast tissue. The birds “share many visual system properties with humans”, according to the study.“With some training and selective food reinforcement, pigeons do just as well as humans in categorizing digitized slides and mammograms of benign and malignant human breast tissue,”

VITAMIN C FOR DOGS.
THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF VITAMIN C.

MALARIA PROTEIN USED FOR CANCER TREATMENT.
Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to the malaria parasite because it produces a protein that binds readily to a sugar molecule in the placenta. This same sugar molecule is also found in most cancer cells; researchers have shown it is possible to attach anticancer drugs to the malaria protein and use it to deliver them precisely to tumors by targeting the sugar.
While the fact that the same sugar molecule (a type of chondroitin sulfate) is found in both the placenta and most cancers is not surprising - since both have cells that grow fast - the evidence for this has only surfaced recently, as senior author Mads Daugaard, an assistant professor of urologic science at UBC, explains:
Once the team discovered that the malaria parasite uses a protein it produces called VAR2CSA to embed itself in the placenta, they immediately saw the potential to use the process as a way to target cancer drugs to tumors. Read more;http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/300939.php

DOGS,DIET AND CANCER.
Watermelon is a highly nutritious fruit packed with nutrients that help body function properly. It is made up of 92% of water, making it a perfect hydration source when body fluids are depleted. Its juice has a calming effect on blood vessels, thus making it valuable in management of hypertension.
Potassium is of the minerals found in watermelon, this helps in regulation of water/electrolyte balance making it valuable in control of heart rate and blood pressure. It protects against stroke and coronary heart disease, regulating blood pressure.
Watermelon contains vitamin C, B ,A, it also contains dietary fiber that is essential for digestive health. The watermelon is a colorful fruit ,adding color to meals, salad or snack bowl, the red pigment is as a result of lycopene which is in high quantity in the fruit.
Lycopene is an antioxidant responsible for destroying any free radicals in the body which normally damage cells and destroys immune system. These free radicals are cancer causing elements, but lycopene mops them up thus preventing several types of cancer and lycopene helps to fight heart disease
Watermelon contains flavonoids, carotenoids and tritepenoids which have anti inflammatory and antioxidant properties, this is the reason why watermelon prevent muscle soreness, joint pain and arthritis. The antioxidant property offers protection against colon, prostate, breast, endometrial, lung and pancreatic cancers.
Watermelon contains citrulline which is an essential amino acid, this is converted to arginine another essential amino acid essentially by the kidneys.Watermelon has natural diuretic properties ,thus helping to maintain kidney health by flushing out of the tubule at regular interval thus preventing urolith formation.
The benefits of watermelon are enormous, and they also offer same benefits to the animal world.
Dogs can be fed with watermelon to supplement their meal, or as a snack or treat, you can also use it as a treatment option in cases of kidney problems or weight management in dogs.
Watermelon given to dogs must be clean,diced/cubed and seedless, and give moderate servings /mealtime.
