Crowdfarming startup that feeds the cows online.

Crowdfunding in agricultural ventures is a simple way to foster communal help for farmers. Farmable, the crowdfarming startup that feeds the cows online.Animal health is the biggest restriction to improving productivity of livestock in Ghana, where myriad of local diseases restrict animal productivity and cause high mortality rates. This is a result of reluctance by smallholders to administer vaccines, lack of knowledge about available medicines and the cost of and access to vaccinations and other medication. Many farmers lack basic production and managerial capabilities to efficiently manage their livestock. Because of this, they do not understand the importance of basic inputs such as provision of sheds for their animals, drenching, dipping or vaccinations of their livestock. This leads to poor animal health and business practices, low quality cattle and increased mortality rates. Farmers are often forced to sell cattle for lower prices before the market is ready due to hunger or the need to send their children to school. Transporting cattle to markets is also difficult due to lack of water resources, poor roads and lack of transport options. Accessing the cattle markets can pose one of the great challenges for many smallholder farmers. The solution came in the form of Farmable, the crowdfarming startup that feeds the cows online. This platform uses crowdfarming of cows with a vision to create a self sustaining enterprise that empowers small holder farmers in Ghana to fight hunger without reliance on external aid. The goal is to raise awareness of the issues facing small holder cattle farmers in Ghana, help them achieve independence and create a crowfunding platform that is both fun and engaging to the world. Farmable;the crowdfarming platform in which social investors and the cowbackers, can purchase a “share” in a real cow in Ghana, a cowshare, in return for exclusive rewards. Farmable is an innovative on-line funding model, that fosters communal help, where individuals support one another by working together. look

Woman loses son and home to rabies.

A woman is in a big dilemma after her marriage crashed because of the death of her son due to bite from rabid dog. Patience Odukomaiya she lost her son who was bitten by a dog that had rabies, and then she was sent packing from her matrimonial home.

She narrated how she lost her five-year-old boy, Jomiloju, to untimely death from a dog bite. “I have lost everything. Why me, why has this happened to me?” she lamented. Looking lost and confused, Patience recalled that on August 8, 2016, the young boy had asked her for money to buy biscuits. When he asked for money to buy biscuit, initially I did not give it a thought, but when he said that if it were to be his father he asked, he would have given him the money, I was compelled to give him N20,” she recalled. She said his brother offered to accompany him to buy the biscuit in the next building inside the estate but Jomiloju declined. As it was not his first time of going to buy it himself, she let him go alone.
Patience said that their house is just outside Rufus Olaniyan Estate where they normally buy things. He had already purchased the biscuits and was on his way back home when he was attacked by dogs belonging to one Mr. Rufus Olaniyan. Jomiloju's clothes were torn as he was bitten by one of the dogs good Samaritans followed him home and told the mum that the dog of Mr. Rufus Olaniyan had bitten him.

The boy was crying and the spot of the bite was gushing blood, the mother took him to New Life Hospital in Ajegunle area of Ikorodu where the wound was cleaned and he was given an injection. They told us that the treatment will last for three days and which the mother complied. Patience said that after the treatment the boy was okay and she though it was all over. But three weeks later, the boy began to feel feverish and was running high temperature.Until this time, she said had actually forgotten about the dog bite incident and her belief was that the boy had developed malaria. She bought an antimalarial drug for him, but when he was not responding , took him to

Randle General Hospital in Surulere where it was confirmed that has  rabies as a result of dog bite. They were referred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital Idi-Araba, where he was treated before he died.

He was quite upset and told her to pack her belongings and leave his house. The husband and his relatives came to Lagos, took away her first son and left the little girl she is nursing. More

Plastics and snail rearing.

Plastics are so useful in the agribusiness sector, aside from being readily available and cheap, they also help in the waste to wealth project. I decided to make a drinker(plastics) for my snails from pet bottles and the result is incredible. #snails. #snails

How to feed snails.

Snails like any other animal must be fed a balanced ration with necessary supplements. Snails are fed various vegetables among other types of feed, but calcium must be part of the diet to ensure proper growth. The snails can get the calcium supplement either by spraying the grounded chalk solution on the body,or the crushed chalk can be finely grounded and added to the vegetables. The calcium solution can also be sprayed on the feed, before serving the snails. There are various ways to present the feed with calcium but the key is that all snails must have access. The pictures below shows, the preparation of feed with calcium supplement; #snails

Women in agriculture and their role in nation building and economic development.

The role of women in nation building can not be overemphasized and their impact in the agricultural sector is phenomenal. Small holder farmers that produce over 60% of the food consumed in the world are women, toiling in the sun, from sun rise to sunset. These women majority of whom are not educated, not empowered and operate without favorable laws and policies still push ahead to make magic happen on the farm, stalls and farmers market. I salute the #African women, with strength so unbelievable. The united nations noted that if women farmers have same access to tools and credit facilities there will be up to 150 million fewer hungry people, can you imagine the potential? The goal to feed the estimated 9 billion population by 2050 can be achieved easily by just doing this simple thing; "Empower women, train our girls" The former IFAD chief ,Kanayo Nwanze really understands the value of women in agriculture as he dedicated his African Food Prize award to “the millions of African women who silently toil to feed their families". Economic empowerment is very important for rural women and it is IFAD’s top priority to promote gender equality. Empowerment will be in the following ways 1) land allocation 2) favorable policies 3) training and seminars on innovation in agriculture that will yield more in less time. 4) provision of credit scheme and insurance cover. 5) cooperative groups, that will create a bond between members and other farmer cooperatives. 6)interactive sections to brainstorm and create a network. The main driver of this empowerment scheme will be cooperative groups, where the women are broken into various sectors and sub-sectors with each sector focusing on a particular segment of production. It is known that when women agree, stand together, then the magic begins....more
