FOOD SAFETY ALERT: FOOD HANDLING AND MARKETING.

 

A concerned citizen sent me this picture, he was wondering why these butchers were washing goats in this dirty water.

A more intense look at the picture will show various activities going on here: 1) slaughtering is going on beside the 2 buildings.

2)Ponmo processing also ongoing.

3) A processor is carrying  processed hides, another processor fetching this same dirty water for processing.

4) A table with processed hides and some quarters.

5) Horns and other wastes generated from slaughtering.

6) Did you notice the person sitting on the white bucket? guess what the person is doing?

 Do you know where these animal parts are been sold? Are you sure of what you are eating?

Ponmo Summit 2023 : discouraging the consumption of animal hides.

 The race to revive the leather industry is on and a multifaceted approach is needed to tap into the $300 billion dollars revenue opportunities in the leather value chain.

 Presently 88% of animal hides in Nigeria is processed as food, the popular Ponmo while only 12% is available for the leather industry.

The diversification of the economy by promoting industrialization in other sectors can be achieved if more attention is given to the leather value chain. A policy to increase in the proportion of animal hides available for the leather industry is a good place to start the campaign to discourage the consumption of ponmo.

The love for ponmo is depriving us of revenue from foreign investment through trading of leather goods and accessories as well as stifling growth of the leather industry. The leather value chain is  enormous with the capacity to generate over 500,000 jobs thereby eliminating unemployment as well as reducing poverty level.

  The questions we should ask now are : how can we get more animal hides for leather production? how can we tap into this huge Forex earnings? what can we do to discourage the eating of these hides? what incentives can be given to ponmo processors//dealers so that hides will move out of food chain to leather chain? 

 These answers will form a pathway for the desired industrialization drive as well as promotion of the leather value chain as discussed at the ponmo summit 2023.

 How can the consumption of hides  be discouraged?  create an awareness about the health implications of ponmo. It is no news that eating ponmo has been linked to cancer, liver and kidney disease e.t.c

 Halal is Arabic for permissible. Halal food is that which adheres to Islamic law, as defined in the Koran. The Islamic form of slaughtering animals or poultry, dhabiha, involves killing through a cut to the jugular vein, carotid artery and windpipe. 

 The global halal meat market size is expected to grow at a Compound annual growth rate of 7.8% during the forecast period (2021–2030).  Ijebu Ponmo, what is it really? Is Ijebu Ponmo wholesome? is Ijebu Ponmo really from IJEBU? Is this Ijebu Ponmo from cattle hides?

Lets go into the Ogun community where its all happening.

Inside multi-million naira ponmo business in Ogun community. According to this story in the Nation newspaper published on 1/Oct/2022. One of the merchants, Aliu Adewale interviewed said, “The cow skin comes in containers and a container contains a minimum of 4,000 pieces. 

Containers carrying small sizes of cow skin cost over N25 million each.“Some people prepare them dry and send them abroad. But I don’t export mine. 

Women come from places like Ondo, Lagos, Ibadan and so on to buy it. “The dry one is even sold in some supermarkets. The number of women involved in this business is very high. ”Quantifying the natives involved in the business, he said: “Fifty per cent of our people are into the business. There are people who only travel to the north and other places like the Sudan to bring in the cow skin. “Another set of people will go and buy from them and process it and another set will come to Ijebu Igbo from different locations to buy it.

 “The cows that are killed in Nigeria are not enough to meet the quantity of ponmo that we process, so people go outside Nigeria to get it. “Besides the amount of sunshine in Nigeria cannot be compared with what obtains in the Sudan. The intensity of sunshine in their country makes their cow skin to be different from ours.” read more here. 

 There really is there is no Ponmo IJEBU, what we have is hides imported to the country and procured from the North and processed in Ogun state. This is then distributed to various states in the country. Is it true that animals slaughtered is not sufficient for ponmo? this is not true: Lagos alone slaughters 6,000 heads of cattle daily, i believe processing these should be enough. Economic implications of buying ijebu Ponmo. 

 1) Butchers are not selling the hides as more merchants are joining the ijebu ponmo trade. 2) Ponmo sellers dealing in authentic ponmo are recording low sales, return investment is low. 3) Legitimate investors in the ponmo business are winding down activities. 

 What next? tell someone to tell someone that Ijebu Ponmo is not really ponmo. The hides are not tracable, you dont know which animals you are consuming. The ponmo is laced with preservatives making these non-edible.

 Sometime ago there was an influx of bad ponmo into the country.These bad ponmo are actually hides and skin meant for the leather industry that some unscrupulous merchants smuggle and sell for human consumption. These ponmo are identified by the smell of the chemicals added to preserve the leather and unusual thickness.
