Four in hospital isolation after contracting anthrax. Four people have been put in an isolation ward at Mt Kenya Hospital Nyeri after been suspected to be infected with anthrax. Nyeri Central sub-county commissioner John Marete said the two brothers and their two neighbours from Thunguma village are reported to have eaten uninspected meat in Ruiru, Kiambu County before travelling to Nyeri on Friday. Mr Marete confirmed that the patients presented themselves at Nyeri Referral Hospital on Saturday morning and were immediately transferred to the health facility after screening. “They went to the county hospital in the morning and were immediately transferred to Mt Kenya hospital. They are receiving treatment at an isolation room since Anthrax is a contagious disease,” said Mr Marete.

ANTHRAX FOUND IN A PIG IN UKRAINE.

A backyard pig that was slaughtered in Chuguyiv, Ukraine, tested positive for the presence of anthrax. The State Veterinary and Phyto-sanitary Service of Ukraine, in a report submitted to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), stated that the pig’s owner had notified a veterinary officer that while he was slaughtering the pig three days earlier, he noticed the animal had an enlarged spleen. Pig had been slaughtered for consumption but no human illnesses resulted. Samples were taken from products from the animal, which tested positive for the presence of anthrax. No other animals were reported by the OIE as susceptible to anthrax. All people that had contact with products from the infected pig were evaluated by a physician, according to an April 6 report from the OIE, and none of those people were found to be infected. All of the products from the infected animal have since been destroyed. The incident marks the first time anthrax has been detected in the Ukraine since 2012, and the source of the latest infection remains uncertain. Control measures used include movement control inside the country, vaccination, disinfection, quarantine and surveillance outside the protection zone. OIE stated that it will submit weekly updates on the Ukrainian anthrax situation until it considers it to be resolved. The Ukrainian pig industry has also dealt with concerns of African swine fever (ASF) in recent weeks. ANTHRAX IN HORSES.

Anthrax caused by a bacteria; Bacillus anthracis is associated with sudden death and blood oozing from all orifices.Its a zoonotic diseases that affects all warm blooded animals , cattle and sheep are more susceptible than other animals.The bacteria can easily be destroyed with common disinfectants,but when bacteria is exposed to air it forms spores that are resistant to drying,heating,chemicals and even disinfectants.These spores are highly resistant and can survive for years in soil, thus becoming an infection foci to surrounding water bodies,ground water and pasture in that vicinity. The source of infection is usually by grazing in contaminated pasture, or by inhalation of spores.The horse could also be infected through skin abrasions caused by insect bites,where the spores enter the wound area staring of a localized infection that progresses. The common signs are fever,sudden staggering,difficult breathing,trembling collapse and death. Colic is usually observed, with swelling and edema especially in the brisket area. Prevention. 1) vaccination. 2) allow horses on clean pasture( check history of area and any report of anthrax in area. Proper disposal of carcass in cases of outbreaks are important, deep burial and cover with lime.
