How to feed snails.

Snails like any other animal must be fed a balanced ration with necessary supplements. Snails are fed various vegetables among other types of feed,but calcium must be part of the diet to ensure proper growth. The snails can get the calcium supplement either by spraying the grounded chalk solution on the body,or the crushed chalk can be finely grounded and added to the vegetables. The calcium solution can also be sprayed on the feed, before serving the snails. There are various ways to present the feed with calcium but the key is that all snails must have access. The role of women in nation building can not be overemphasized and their impact in the agricultural sector is phenomenal. Small holder farmers that produce over 60% of the food consumed in the world are women,toiling in the sun,from sun rise to sunset. These women majority of whom are not educated,not empowered and operate without favorable laws and policies still push ahead to make magic happen on the farm,stalls and farmers market. The united nations noted that if women farmers have same access to tools and credit facilities there will be up to 150 million fewer hungry people,can you imagine the potential? The goal to feed the estimated 9 billion population by 2050 can be achieved easily by just doing this simple thing; "Empower women,train our girls" The former IFAD chief ,Kanayo Nwanze really understands the value of women in agriculture as he dedicated his African Food Prize award to “the millions of African women who silently toil to feed their families". Economic empowerment is very important for rural women and it is IFAD’s top priority to promote gender equality. Empowerment will be in the following ways 1) land allocation 2) favorable policies 3) training and seminars on innovation in agriculture that will yield more in less time. 4) provision of credit scheme and insurance cover. 5) cooperative groups,that will create a bond between members and other farmer cooperatives. 6)interactive sections to brainstorm and create a network. The main driver of this empowerment scheme will be cooperative groups,where the women are broken into various sectors and sub-sectors with each sector focusing on a particular segment of production. Management practices in snail rearing.

The soil must be moistened but not water-logged but deep enough so that the snails can burrow and lay eggs. The management of hatchling are different and should be handled with care. The pen must be in a dark place shielded from the sun,as exposure to sun at this time will kill them. The feeding is done in the dark as well,because moving out to sunny zones to get the feed will result in their death . 

They need more calcium at this level,failure to provide will result in slow growth and development. The best way to ensure they have this supplement is to grind the calcium source e.g chalk ,mix in water and spray the hatchlings directly. 

The uptake of the calcium by absorption gives a 100% assurance that each hatchling has a portion. 

 Cleaning of the snail is also important,this is done by soaking a piece of clean cloth or foam in water and gently wiping the shell clean.

Snail rearing is a very feasible urban agricultural project. The housing ,feeding and rearing is easy that you only require just some few minutes everyday to attend to them before you dash off to work.

 Snail rearing in urban areas is simple and any person can easily be trained to start the venture. Snail farming has the added advantage  that there is no environmental pollution from the waste and also no noise because the snails are quiet,nocturnal with no offensive smell.
