The colostrum found in the breast before and after a puppy is born is rich with antibodies and essential for pups.The pup in-utero was breathing in a sterile environment until birth, so, now needs to build up its own immune defense.

 The colostrum is a nutritious, balanced, and protective food and the pups needs it after losing contact with the placenta. The placenta is a pouch that was providing them with nutrition for growth in the mother’s womb.

 The production of milk for puppies (first milk) takes place in the last weeks of pregnancy. Colostrum comprises of several mammary gland secretions combined with proteins. These are transported to the blood under the effect of hormones this results in a higher concentration of immunoglobulins in comparison to regular milk.

          Colostrum contains:

 1) Antibodies – Colostrum has a lot of factors linked to the nonspecific immune system. These are lactoperoxidase, lysozyme, and lactoferrin, which have toxic effects on microbes such as viruses and/or bacteria.

 2) Mediators – Colostrum contains soluble mediators referred to as cytokines, these include interferon or interleukins. These mediators assist in inflammation, immune cell recruitment, and immune regulation.

 3) Sugars – colostrum contains mainly oligosaccharides that affect pathogen growth but boost the growth of beneficial microflora in the large intestine. Colostrum has a profound effect on gut health.
