Elumelu In Africapitalism.
Elumelu In Africapitalism. Few Africans have talked about pan Africanism and made it happen.
And one of such people is Tony Elumelu, the self-appointed champion of AFRICAPITALISM -Afrocentric entrepreneurship aimed at stimulating economic growth towards the elimination of poverty in the continent of Africa.
T he banker turned entrepreneur through his HEIRS holding-a diversified conglomerate, has in the past three years been leveraging on his philanthropic platform, Tony Elumelu Foundation, TEF to turn the whole African landscape of 54 countries into a sort of investment tapestry, just like a visual artist paints his vision on canvas.
His commitment to spend a jaw-dropping sum of $100m in the next 10 years empowering budding entrepreneurs is so strikingly remarkable that skeptics would have thought that it was a mere gimmick. But as it has turned out, Elumelu is not a politician that may be given to hoaxes.
Being a businessman who is fighting a cause, as the youths say in street lingo, Elumelu has been putting his money where his mouth is by consistently training and seeding at least 1,000 entrepreneurs from across the continent with $10,000 each which translates into $10m annually in the past three years.
Tony Elumelu is replicating the Africanism initiative via the invitation of 1,000 African entrepreneurs to a gathering and commitment of $100m for the development of entrepreneurial spirit and culture .
WHO boss 'rethinking' Mugabe goodwill ambassador post.
WHO boss 'rethinking' Mugabe goodwill ambassador post. The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) has said he is "rethinking" his decision to name Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe a goodwill ambassador in the face of growing criticism over the move.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director general of the UN health agency, had this week asked Zimbabwe's 93-year-old leader to serve in the role to help tackle non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like heart attacks, strokes and asthma across Africa.
The decision triggered confusion and anger among key WHO member states and opposition figures in Zimbabwe who noted that the country's healthcare system, like many of its public services, has been rife with problems under Mugabe's decades-long leadership. Mugabe
Agric financing raises hope of economic recovery.
Agric financing raises hope of economic recovery. The agricultural sector has recorded impressive growth in recent years despite the decline in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) thanks to funding from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) through commercial banks, Head of Agriculture Department at the Union Bank of Nigeria Plc Olabode Abikoye has said.
He said the sector recorded positive growth of above four per cent last year despite the decline in the oil and non-oil sectors, saying the sector thrived in terms of the GDP due to the government’s economic diversification which brought more funding to the sector at a time contributions from the oil sector have nosedived.
“The Nigerian economy is import-dependent with very little non-oil exports. It relies substantially on crude oil and gas exports with other sectors trailing far behind. The economy is, therefore, susceptible to shocks in the oil and gas industry. In recent times, these shocks have been caused by either developments in the international crude oil market or unease in the Niger Delta region.
Despite the challenges in the macro environment, businesses are increasing investments in mechanised farming and other activities in the agric value chain, such as processing, storage, packaging, delivery and logistics,” he said. Agriculture
