Hong Kong culls thousands of birds over avian flu scare
Hong Kong culled 4,500 birds on 7/6/16 after the deadly H7N9 bird flu virus was discovered in a chicken at a local market.
Health officials in white hazmat suits and masks dumped the chickens into green plastic bins at a wholesale poultry market in central Hong Kong. The bins were then pumped with carbon dioxide to kill the birds.
Hong Kong is particularly alert to the spread of viruses after an outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome swept through the city in 2003, killing 299 people and infecting around 1,800.
Bird flu scares in the past two years have seen mass culls of up 20,000 birds in Hong Kong. A spokeswoman for the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department said the latest cull included chickens and pigeons.
Trade of live poultry has also been suspended after authorities said Saturday the avian flu virus was found in a fecal sample collected from a chicken at a market in the Tuen Mun, a neighborhood in the west of Hong Kong.
The city's health minister Ko Wing-man said the city was staying "stringent" against infectious diseases when he announced the cull late Monday.
H7N9 is a particular worry for authorities as it does not kill infected chickens or cause them to develop symptoms, which allows it to spread undetected until contact is made with humans.
The majority of human cases of H7N9 infection have been associated with direct or indirect contact with infected live or dead poultry, according to the World Health Organization.
Human infections from the H7N9 strain were first reported in China in 2013. The virus can cause serious respiratory illness and has led to deaths.

ELECTRICITY FROM CHICKEN WASTE.
The use of waste to generate electricity in the world today has various advantages to the individuals, nation and the environment.
The waste generated in the poultry industry, the livestock farms, agricultural waste, food waste and human waste can be channeled into a bio-gas plant to produce methane, heat and electricity.
The power generation in most countries need to be upgraded to serve the populace better, drive industrial growth and maintain a safe environment. The millions of tons of chicken droppings/litter can be channeled and put in a bio-gas plant to generate electricity. Waste of poultry has before now been a menace to the society because of improper management and disposal, but with the introduction of a pre-treatment technology that treats the waste before its passed to the anaerobic digester, for breakdown to produce the desired products.
The use of chicken waste to generate power will reduce cost of production in the manufacturing industry, which will translate to lowered overhead cost, lower prices of products and more profit for manufacturers.
The generation of electricity from waste is a viable project taking to consideration the amount of poultry birds that are in the country; in a well managed system various sectors/areas can actually provide power to their community.
The generation of electricity from chicken droppings is on the move..................join the change movement! no more blackouts....Electricity for all.

AVIAN INFLUENZA UPDATE.
The highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza virus spread continues in some parts of the world, with Egypt recording 3 new cases in man bringing the total to 10 new cases in 2015.
The spread of the avian influenza virus has dropped the prices of poultry products in Xiamen ,China. The recent H7N9 bird flu case in china has reduced the sales, consumption and marketing of poultry products. The confirmation of H7N9 outbreak has stopped the purchasing of ducks, geese, doves and quail. The report from disease prevention and control confirmed 2 new cases in man, which has brought total number to 5.
This has prompted the populace to hands off poultry/poultry products ,resturants/hotels have also stopped preparing recipes with poultry products. The poultry markets in the outskirts with poultry have to undergo disinfection before selling their products.
The HPAI infection in China has lead to the ban of poultry products in Hong kong. The Hong kong government has issued a statement that only local chickens be allowed in the markets and placed a 21 day ban on other sources of poultry, this took effect on 1/1/2015 when H7N9 was detected in a consignment from Guandong.
